We haven't accepted anything yet, have we? The club won't see all these £8m figures being talked about in the national papers then accept less than half? People cried a river when Diego left but they came in with 6 months left on his contract and as part of the deal we've acquired arguably one of the best keepers in the league in Henderson, Katrien was a lawyer therefore I trust her to get the best deal possible for both Joe and the club

How was that part of the deal?
He was still under contract wasn't he? correct me if I'm wrong but we got him on a free transfer therefore you'd presume the Poyet deal had something to do with it
Wish this thread would go back to some decent rumours, however….
Feel the need to comment on all the Gomez speculation. Really hope he doesn’t go – such an exciting player (already) and will only get better – as so many have said on here. But I wish reality would kick-in for many on here. Roland Duchatelet is first and foremost a business man, secondly a dabbler in ‘social experimentation’ (as seen by his political games) and (probably) thirdly an enthusiastic football fan. I’m fairly certain he didn’t buy Charlton for any one reason – but a combination of all 3 of the things listed above. He follows his football teams closely (so we are all told) and wants to dabble with a network of teams, wheeling and dealing to (hopefully) all their individual benefits. What I don’t understand is why anyone would think he is happy to fund any team with his ‘own money’ to the tune of £5 – 8m per year – just for the fun of it!
My supposition is that his business model is predicated on the academy and development of valuable youngsters that can then be sold at a profit (with the odd purchase who may go up in value along the way) – to fund the on-going network. If he gets it right (big IF) then it probably could work – but we should all expect to see the likes of Gomez for 1 or 2 seasons before the ‘asset’ is cashed-in. I’m sure the next saleable asset has already been identified and is being nurtured…
If anyone on here can afford to plough £5m - £8m per year into the club just to keep it going and then invest in improving the academy, the pitch and infrastructure on top – then please step forward and maybe we can stop the sale of our most promising players. Otherwise accept that it is a fact of modern football.
I assume that the Gomez deal will be part of that agreement we signed with Liverpool when Shelvey went. And that we will be getting Sterling in return.
Charlton could recoup £10m from Joe Gomez transfer Monday, 15 June 2015
By Richard Cawley JOE Gomez's transfer from Charlton could eventually be worth £10million.
And reports emanating from Merseyside that Liverpool had agreed a deal of £3.5m for the 18-year-old defender are wide of the mark.
The South London Press has been told that Gomez will leave the Addicks but that no deal has been finalised yet.
And any initial deal will be for at least £5m - which could be pushed up to £6m.
But there are also a number of add-ons which mean any deal for Gomez will come in at around £10m.
The youngster has previously snubbed interest from England's top clubs to sign a professional deal with Charlton. And now he is set to seal them a sizeable fee, despite playing just one season at first-team level.
Some, if not all of this has been said, but just seen it and thought for anyone that does not want to read 62 pages, otherwise, hello Colin
Whatever happens, the fee is not Joe's fault, and I hope wherever he goes he does well, and look forward to him playing for England, at least he signed a professional contract with us, to enable Charlton to get a fee for him. Good luck Joe
well .. moot point, but I'd have Rufus over Gomez any day of the hypothetical week
Crazy argument, you are comparing Rufus in his prime with Gomez beginning his career. Come to think of it, this whole thread is crazy. 'I think £3 million' followed by 'I think £7 Million' followed by Undisclosed Fee, which will be followed by 'I am told it was £3 Million' followed by 'A reliable source that I can't disclose has said £7 Million'. Followed by we all fall asleep with boredom !
Comparing the two at 18, I think Gomez has more talent. We are comparing two outstanding prospects (if we imagine the 18 year old Rufus). Gomez has similar pace and strength, but is better positionally and has considerably more talent on the ball. Rufus was a pure defender, with great pace and strength. Had RR been better on the ball, he'd have been in high demand from the top clubs.

Yeah... cos we never sold any of our youth prospects til RD came along. Not saying it's not irritating but it's not an RD problem, it's a football problem.
This, a lot, we have always been a selling club, Im still pissed off that we sold Derek Hales.

Well said, ross1.
Don't believe I've commented about Joe on this thread but have read everyone's thoughts with interest.
My heart says we should encourage Joe to stay for another season when he'll have regular first team football to develop his skills further whilst showcasing his talents to the full in readiness for a lucrative move next summer.
My head says go forth & prosper, young man - put yourself on the highest stage possible & grasp every opportunity with both hands/feet.
Whatever the outcome, Joe will always be a shining example of Charlton's Academy, like Parker, Shelvey & Jenkinson before him. Talented youngsters, and their parents will be reminded again of the prowess of this esteemed establishment and the opportunities gained therein. This can only be a huge positive for our Club in general.
However, although some have clearly stated that promotion to the Land of Milk & Money is NOT high on the agenda at this moment in time, I am concerned about the lack of continuity in our squad. It was inevitable that certain players would be released , whilst others would be sought to take their place.....that's the nature of the game. However, I believe there is much to be said for continuity ; for retaining a decent percentage of players who have performed well together during the previous season. If JBG and young Joe depart for pastures new ( and I wish them well if this is the case) and Yoni moves onwards/sideways too, we'll be losing a quarter of our strongest starting eleven( why state the obvious, Fanny?) and their replacements will need to have some very special attributes IMO.
We know only too well how successful SCP's recruitment policy in Division 1 turned out and there are obviously circumstances where a "good clear out" is the way forward. But, having progressed a long way with our strike force ( at last) , we could find ourselves very short at the back( not aimed at you, Chris!) and depleted in midfield....For the benefit of all concerned, and thinking primarily of the fans, it would be good to hit the ground running in August with players who have already formed a good understanding on the pitch, like TWWW & Igor. That word "continuity" again......
Don't understand the backlash about Gomez, as if one of the previous regimes wouldn't have sold him had a good enough offer came in. It's not like RD is suddenly selling off every player he possibly can. We have always been and are likely to always be a selling club along with the vast majority of other clubs.
Always please can people stop posting Twitter links, I can't see them at work and it's getting tedious.

I would be more worried about Jordon Cousins going than Gomez.
Absolutely.
It could be agent talk so he is offered a contract extension ?.
I would have thought this would be on the cards if he is staying. I would also think he is on a lot less money than other players as I should assume he is on the original contract when he turned 17
As much as I'd like to keep Gomez selling him is not the end of the world fgs. Yes we would all want more money for him and yes we'd like to keep our best young players but every player has his price and tbh I wish him all the luck because he didn't reject a contract and not going for tribunal fee which are generally crap.
We are not going to be able to afford to turn down every offer for all of our young prospects. Not a fan of RD , far from it, but are you all serious in thinking he still wouldn't have been sold if jimenez/slater or even Murray/Varney were still in charge ? Yes RD and KM said they wanted to develop our youth and hold onto the best, of course they did. What else would they say?. Also said we don't have to sell our best players. No we don't have to but championship clubs sell to premiership clubs. That's how it works until you are in the premiership. You can't keep everyone especially in the position we are in, which is at best a mid table championship team. One player doesn't make a team and no-one is irreplaceable. As it stands only Gomez is being linked with actually leaving and the money generated could go into building us a strong team, same as what happened with Jenkinson. Speculation that the money won't go back into us is just that. Cousins not going anywhere to my knowledge, neither are henderson, watt, vetokele or JBG, who are all very important players for the coming season.
As said I'm no fan of RD, but I can't see how any previous board would not also cash in on any player if decent money was offered. If SLP report is correct fee wise I'd be happy with that. Not ecstatic but happy enough.
I.just hope we start bringing in players soon so panicking can start to decline a bit.
Losing Gomez would be and is going to be upsetting in terms of the drive of our current owners to get us up the league, losing Cousins would be a worry in that we may drop the other way. He was an integral part of our season, he carried Buyens in so many a game, hence the reason clubs are going in for JC not YB, as well as age and potential to grow as a player in which he definitely still is.
Wish this thread would go back to some decent rumours, however….
