......how many players in the top flight, all over the world, know they're gonna be leaving at the end of the season, but still turn out for their side fir thr closing couple if games?

It ain't like what Tayor did is standard practice is it
He’s a footballer, they do and say what we see as dumb things that are more dumber than the rest of us do because their dumb things get reported. The only thing we should care about is whether he could score the goals that can get us promoted. One goal from him which we know he would have scored in those final games before he left would have kept us up but getting relegated that season wasn’t down to him alone.

I'm amazed Gundogan played in the CL final last night, could have scuppered his big pay day. What an idiot.
I was gonna mention him, but then thought about people shooting me down for comparing him playing in that game and Taylor walking out on little old Charlton, even though the games he refused to play in for us, were relatively - arguably - more important imo

No it's not. If you follow the thread I'm replying to, the convo is more about whether or not he was wrong to walkout as he did.

If I was to answer the question as to whether we should get him back, I'd personally probably say yes

    I would definately say no.
He was great for us when he played but what he did at the end is unforgivable.
Holden has already stated he has a no dickhead rule.
Yeah, I wouldn't be too bothered if it didn't happen, but just look at it as a way to help us get back up there.

I think Holden was very sensitive to feelings around Bonne tweet when he left the first time, Holden said that words to the effect that he didn't want to introduce the wrong vibe.etc So I think that makes it extremely unlikely that Taylor would be re-signed.
However subject to fitness, sharpness and motivation being closely examined, I think Taylor would be an excellent signing. But far more likely to go to the Championship.

Gundogan has millions , a few more is no big deal.Taylor in footballing terms is impoverished hence the Nott.F contract was indeed a big deal in terms of his career earnings

    I think he'll play on.

Whilst 3 years on 15-20k seems a hell of a lot (which it is), it's not going to mean he can live the high life for the rest of his days. At best for those three years is £1.1-£1.4m in your pocket, and he'll have spent a proportion already.

He'll get a 12 month gig at Championship or more likely league one on £150k+ a year, he'll take that and kick the can down the road.
But prior to that he was probably on around £250k per year for a few years so unless he was being stupid with that theres no reason to think he didnt already have a substantial amount salted away before he went to Forest.

Invested sensibly he shouldn't have to "work" again unless he wants to.

It's such a comfort to know that the narcissistic entitled prick won't be destitute.
Probably not even that much really. I doubt he was earning 5k a week at the likes of Falkirk, Scunthorpe and AFC Wimbledon.

I've no doubt he's not exactly struggling but at the age of 33, would his career earnings really be enough to never have to work again?
Say he has a couple of million in the bank.

Buy a couple of houses and rent them out for 3k a month each.

    Have 500k for spending money.

Tax. Upkeep of the houses. And the agency fees, as he won’t want the hassle of fixing things himself.
If he had £3m in the bank he could get a high interest account quite easily.
    6.5% interest with a 1% charge

stick £2m in there, take a £10k a month “salary” and never touch your investment and it will grow slightly.  There will be times you spend more than £10k a month but before long you’d run out of unnecessary shit to buy

And still have £1m to piss about with

you can see why he took the move as he’s set for life. He could go and live un Montserrat and live like a deity.

can’t see him being a pundit as he dislikes the game

Lyle Taylor is full of contradictions.
I have heard him say he doesn't like football or watch it often but he would be a forthright pundit !

Arrogant and selfish to Charlton fans but a guy who when at Wimbledon, sorted out a senior pro who took umbrage to an academy player who had skilled him up.
The academy player's mum told me the story and loved the man.

Hero to Zero at Charlton but he has raised thousands for charity and when he sponsored a Charlton Woman's match at Oakwood a few years back we had a long chat about his parents roots and the life of a pro footballer. Interesting character but I felt he had insecurities below the surface. Like most footballers they seek the contract to upgrade their lives.

Lyle Taylor should've ended up in our hall of fame not our hall of shame.
Spot on…after the way he let us down so badly it’s easy to forget how great he was to the lady and her family who was in the hospice with cancer.

There was good in him but he massively made a bad decision which let our club and fans down and unfortunately that undone all the good he had done in both terms of scoring goals and going out of his way to support fans in need etc.

We need to move on, he’s not coming back here and we have bigger problems than Lyle Taylor!
"undone all the good he had done in both terms of scoring goals ".

His goals were not cancelled/disallowed and there was no points deduction in the games he played therefore this statement is not true. Therefore he he made positive contribution in that season.
You are disappointed about his behaviour, so was I. But get over it. Its his career move of his life, many people would make the same decision in other walks of life for increasing their salary 400~~%.
I don't think many would make the same choice - in fact, hundreds of footballers who were also out of contract didn't.

Just play the the last few games, or at the very least those you're contracted for, and then get the same contract anyway.
Not if he broke his leg in our remaining games.

Have never been upset with Taylor for his decision.
Make sure you don't moan about being in League 1 then as he is one of the main reasons why we are where we are.
Blows my mind how anyone can think it's ok what he did.
If Taylor plays (& does what most footballers did and honoured their contract) - we stay up.

I don't, it's all about dough at the end of the day.   I understand why he did it.
"I don't, it's all about dough at the end of the day.   I understand why he did it."

Think most people understand why he done it - so he didn't ruin his chances of a big move and obviously more money - it's pretty self explanatory really, but where people tend to disagree is whether or not it was morally the right thing to do.

I think that if you're someone who's generally the conscientious type in your own life, you're gonna struggle with agreeing with what he did. If, however, you're the type who only sees pound signs and generally has an "I'm alright Jack" attitude, you're not going to see a problem with it.

    Imo, its that simple.
I think that people are upset because he did it to our club and we ended up being relegated that season.
If we had not been relegated I do not think so many people would have been upset.
It was a life changing move for him.

He knew exactly what he was doing, he knew it would leave us in the shit. There is no way on earth I would want the shithouse back at our club, unless it was with another club and see him kicked off the park.

I don’t want him back after what he did. I also doubt he’d be the same player with the hunger no longer there. He got his big move and pay rise, and proven people wrong too.

Need to avoid signing players just coming here for a job.
  • @Scoham Agree with not even thinking of trying to sign him but disagree that he proved people wrong, he had one season on the subs bench, then one season in the reserves then got dumped.

I think he would look at it that that one contract did prove people wrong, before he left Wimbledon every club he played for released him because they didn't think he was good enough. He probably made more money in 3 years than some of those decision-makers made in their life time.

And Eddie Howe made him train with the under 21s cause he only wanted players that were committed and has now booted him out of Newcastle.
So it shows what he thought of him.

  • Leaving aside that he’s a total **** who I never want to see wearing the shirt again…there’s nothing to suggest he’d be the player he was for us three years ago. Even then he lacked pace. He’s now relatively old, physically inferior and mentally less committed as he’s on his way down and doesn’t even like football that much. I’d happily leave him to be another club’s problem. The days of Lyle Taylor being remotely relevant are over.

Lacked pace……really, that’s the first time I’ve heard anyone say that! 🤔
  • Really? A strong player, used his body well but certainly not fast. The pace came from Grant but I certainly never saw any significant pace from Taylor.
  • edited June 2023
Never thought Taylor was slow... I do remember him saying in an interview that he wished he had Grant's pace - But he wasn't a slouch... If anything his goals proved pace is overrated if you have a Football brain
