  • When was the last time England fielded a team with two Joes? Has it ever happened?
  • England revert to their default position of 3 down for <40...
  • Helluva delivery that!
  • TBF to Root that was an absolute snorter.

    42-3.
  • To be fair to England (and this is anything but an excuse for our inept batting at times) but Root's delivery and the one that Denly gloved suggests that this is not a Test wicket.
  • Interesting that Buttler is at 5 and Stokes 6 now.

It will be when they bat.....

Might just as well have been 6!
  • Looking at the way the wicket is playing I reckon the game will be over by lunch on day four
  • 55-4

    Bairstow 37*

Bairstow a good man to have out there imo

Still a good man. He's building something here

Day Four? Is there rain forecast to delay it that long?
  • Bairstow 51*
The rest nowhere to be seen
  • Genuinely think players have lost the ability to play test cricket. Most have given their wicket away and the one still out there is treating it like a 20:20
  • We're in trouble now - the non spinning slow bowler is on!
  • We move on to 78... well done England. :-)
  • Ah balls. YJB out for 52. Plumb as you like.
  • poor batting display but the pitch is very dodgy .. compare the high bounce that did for Root and the low bounce that got past Bairstow
  • Won’t know how good/bad England’s batting display is until after Jimmy & Broad get at the Windies. Mind you , I could hazard a guess.....

We won't have long to find out the way things are going

to me it seems obvious that they cant go from the shorter form of the game to Test cricket without it effecting the way they bat.

yet another piece on why there is such poor batting displays in the last few years by all top international test side:

How do you not go from the short game to the long game when being centrally contracted almost totally stops you from playing the 4 day game anyway? The ECB will allow Root and Buttler, for example, to play in the Big Bash and the IPL but how many CC matches will they have to play for Yorks or Lancs?
  • Maybe England should bat from back to front. Lower order always seems to score more than the top.

Plenty of other internationals play t20 though and then score for their country.

Unfortunately the money is too appealing now to go play in those tournaments. But it’s not just England’s that do it
  • This could end up being a competitive score if Moeen and Foakes hold it together.

Root played 3 CC games in the whole of last season and was out all 6 times making just 95 in total. Pujara, by contrast, following his 3 hundreds in the recent series against Australia, has played two games in the Ranji Trophy in the last two weeks scoring 11 & 67* in one and 45 and 131* in the other. Therein lies the difference.
  • There was a fair amount of rain before this test started.
Also there's a fair amount of grass on this wicket.
Whoever batted first was going to struggle in the morning session and that was England.
The wicket is looking less intimidating now and we are doing our best to get a competitive score.
    Fingers crossed we will.
  • Moeen gone for 60 to a ball that behaved pretty absurdly off the pitch. Good knock
