On the Bonne/OG debate...we’ve got good in-house pitchside footage from behind the goal which shows the final touch is off Bonne’s back. No danger of it going down as an own-goal.
Would love to see that footage to end the debate because it doesn't look like it took a touch from Bonne in the replay. It's clear to me that it bobbles in off of Stuart Dallas' right hip - look at his reaction, that's the hands-on-head despair of someone who's scored an OG.
I want it to be Bonne's goal because he worked so hard and deserves it but...
Extract from OS of Bowyer's post match comments referring to today's gameplan:
"I work hard, I watched a lot of Leeds games, like I do every other team and I recognised that they struggle against teams that play with three at the back. They don’t create half as many chances as they do against teams that play with four at the back.
"My intention was to start with a back four at the beginning and really try and get after them and disturb them if you like and that seemed to work but I always knew that after 20 minutes we was going to go back to a back three and then maybe try and soak up a bit of pressure and hit them on the break. We did that and all my plans worked today."
Where to start? @Len\'s_little_girl and I briefly considered not bothering this morning because we thought Leeds would give us a tonking. In mitigation we've had an eventful week. Another grandson for me and nephew for @Len\'s_little_girl born on Monday which has occupied us and then I wasn't very well in the middle of the week for a day or two. However we decided to dust ourselves down and 'it would be what it would be' to paraphrase the great Lee.
To the game and once more where to start? Leeds came out like Meatloaf (bat out of hell for the youngsters) and we barely got a kick. Dillon Phillips made at least two very smart saves to keep us in it in the first twenty minutes and it seemed to be Leeds and more Leeds before we finally won a corner which led to a goalmouth scramble from which, apparently, Bonne got the last touch as the ball entered the net and it was 1-0 Charlton! We then reverted to more of the same and Leeds pressed us until half time but we kept them out and went in 1 up. The second half started similarly but after the first ten or fifteen minutes we got more of a foothold and competed pretty evenly for long periods until an increasingly desperate Leeds put our defence under pressure once more for much of the last 15 minutes and time added on but again, somehow, we hung on!
What about the players? This was very much a team performance and it is hard to pick out individuals accordingly. However there are three who caught my eye for different reasons: Dillon Phillips I've already mentioned. The other two are Macauley Bonne and Darren Pratley. When we were under the cosh early on Pratley bust a gut to win a ball in our penalty box, which he did, he then looked for a pass and mishit one in Bonne's direction but closer to a Leeds player. Bonne sprinted to ensure he got that ball first and then out muscled the Leeds player and retained possession long enough for support to arrive. For me that one incident epitomised the team ethic and ethos Bowyer has built up. Compare and contrast with Hemed who would have expected that pass to be gift wrapped with a ribbon and the right paper as it arrived at his feet. Could that attitude be why he (Hemed) wasn't even in the squad today? The third individual is the aforementioned Pratley. I am on record last season of asking what Pratley brings to the team. Now I know. Nous essentially. There was an incident today where he crawled to the touchline on all fours shielding the ball and buying time for us to reset. Someone from Leeds kicked him and we won a free kick as well as relieving the pressure.
Negatives? Only one. I fear the substitution of Williams was down to injury rather than tactical. If so I hope the injury is not serious.
Last but not least it was good to meet @WSS on the concourse before the game today.
Leeds are a very well drilled side but lacked any kind of craft or imagination in the final third ...admittedly Phillips pulled off some cracking saves and we had a bit of luck
Charlton played with 11 heroes on the pitch with Gallagher the pick....what a player! Great atmosphere today
Just for 90 mins you can get lost in supporting the team and forget that Roland is still around
Agree Croydon & Henry Irving. Leeds are a class act & again kudos to good away support. I think this team w/o Taylor can hold their own as long as everyone stays fit. COYR
Lockyer's pointless booking. He was trying to influence the ref to show red. And it was a red. Pratley foul, I thought he got the ball and player fell over his leg. Naby misplaced passes were forward first time balls which could of sent us on a counter. Take a touch and chance is gone. Chuks is the nearest we have to Lyle, style-wise but his failure to chase down balls is why he will always be a sub.
What a match that was. Some serious shithousery there but absolute heroes the lot of them.
Fought for every ball and scrapped for every half chance. Proper side in Lee Bowyers image.
Defense all outstanding. Gallagher immense. Haven't seen a kid that good so early in his career before.
The move to 3 at the back was key. They had too much space before that. The way they passed the ball was another level. I thought they were going to ruin us after 10 mins but the switch changed it. We restricted them to mostly shots from distance from then on. The strikers split with William's as the false 9 to stop them doubling on our full backs was a decent tactical play from Bowyer.
William's class too, worked well as a false 9. Went down holding his groin before he went off so I really hope hes not out. Couple others (Cullen, Leko, Bonne, Gallagher) also appeared to be struggling st points. Hopefully just a touch of cramp from their efforts.
Knew ref was gonna be a thundercunt when he let Phillips get away with 4 fouls (3 bad) in the first 20 mins without a card.
Bamford with a tackle that would have been a red at the rugby world cup but somehow wasn't a red here. Was expecting it by that point.
First game of the season for me. Not a bad one to start off with!
Everything already said but have to say Solly, Lockyer and Gallagher were absolutely immense today. The rest weren't far behind.
2 things did make me laugh. First time I have seen Aneke in the flesh. Blimey, he's a lump and surely a stone overweight. Watching him trying to outrun a defender was amusing!
Secondly, I couldn't help but laugh at the Leeds supporter who had obviously tried to make a quick getaway in his car (complete with Leeds sticker in the back window and scarf on parcel shelf) down Harvey Gardens and got stuck outside the shop when the crowds presumably started coming out. Poor sod had to sit there and be abused by hundreds walking past! I suspect Charlton may not now be one of his favourite teams!

Do not play this victory down because of stats etc people, they are thee best team in the league and anyone who finishes above them will win the league minimum second. Plus we were missing our talisman who actually might of made it more comfortable.
What a win, typical bowyer performance again for the occasion, he just doesn’t disappoint and gets it right when it matters. MOM tough but for me Leko edges it, he pretty much collapsed at FT run himself into the ground and showed glimpses of really class. Although Gallagher and Lockyer deserve praise too.
Said I’d be happy with three points from the next three before KO, anything is a bonus now.
Oh my days. I'm still buzzing after that. The more so because the first 10 minutes were terrifying.
14 heroes out there. MOM, I guess I too would go for Gallagher, but hell's teeth i would not argue with anyone who wanted to give it to Solly, Lockyer, Cullen, Pratley, or even Williams over the 60 mins he was out there. And that's not to denigrate anyone else. Yes Leko makes the wrong decisions at times, but he is here to learn and sooner or later he is going to destroy some team this season. I'm not quite sure what Chuks is all about, but if Bow is, that's good enough for me.
As for the ref, the shame is that his decisions in terms of calling fouls at least for the first hour, were impeccable, so why he couldn't build on his decisions to get his card out on Phillips at least is beyond me. Teams are setting out to stop Gallagher Cullen and Williams by going through them, and its about time refs got a grip.
I don't want to get carried away, especially with that muppet still owning us. But its been a long time since I've felt this proud to be Charlton.

The guy who was driving totally knew what he was doing - car windows wound down & a "bring it on " attitude.
Loads of Charlton fans giving him & his passenger some friendly abuse especially when he couldn't drive any further, surrounded by our lot & with a couple of policemen approaching. I bet he was thinking he'd be lauding it following another 3 points for his team.....lol.
One young man, who shall remain nameless, took his wad of chewing gum out of his mouth & lobbed it through the window onto the driver's lap.
Bet the Leeds guys wished their strikers had such good aim today !
Fantastic block by Sam Field. Cruyff turn by Naby when last man. Brentford all over again. But after the disappointment of the last two games, we got our fighting spirit back and a massive 3 points. The best two teams at the valley so far has been Brentford and Leeds, but neither had a cutting edge on the day. No weak links today but our final ball needs to improve, both Leko and Aneke wasted break away final passes. The Valley was rocking and our squad is decent with only the two Israeli players to join the party.
Smashing day to be at the Valley when we make more noise than dirty Leeds.
Before the game , sitting in the traffic trickling towards the blackwall tunnel I had a quick flick on Charlton Life match thread and Lookie was optimistic with “I think it’ll be a good one “ and I shook my head fearing he’d lost the plot/ was drunk and was in cloud cuckoo land , o ye of little faith !
Just hope come November 9th we have some rub of the green left to use up !
The graft these players put in is beyond anything I’ve seen before, added with some class and the sheer will to win it genuinely is the spirit of Bowyer shoving us all around that pitch and producing result after result that is beyond belief . Outstanding performances all over the pitch , it’s a joy to watch .
Absolutely shattered at the end of that but well worth it , shame on me for not being that bothered about going but my 13 year old pushed the issue and off we went .
We eventually silenced the Leeds faithful once the red wave began to swarm around the dirty northern bastards .
It wouldn’t surprise me if we lost 5 on the spin or won 5 on the spin but whatever happens you know everything will be left out on the pitch .
above the scum , long may it continue and 4th bottom will be most welcome come the end of the season, especially if we finish above them !!
Best things about today; Macauley bonne, Conor and josh ( everyone had a good game but these two are really really good and we are so fortunate to have them) worst things; chuks didn’t want to play. Leeds are a bloody good footballing team. Great day and a famous win.
Great result, great effort, Galagher Prateley, Sarr, Solly, and everyone else put in amighty effort. Tough watching the last 10 minutes. I must confess - during injury time I was still saying to my self 'well they will equalize but we're great chance for a point'..
But it only takes 1 shot to score 1 goal. We were just more clinical.
LB missed a trick. If I were him I'd reply back...." I think he's interpreter must have misheard him as surely the team that wins is the better team....."
Given there were a few who were struggling for fitness by the end of the match. It will be interesting to see who starts against a very good side midweek.

Was alsp impressed with Bonne. Was much more physical and skillful than I was expecting.
Beating Leeds at home.

Lockyer showing plenty of leadership as well which I liked. Though he did (rightly) lose his head at Bamfords "tackle" on Gallagher.
Pratley organising. I could name them all.

No idea where ref got five added mins from and he actually played around six.
Brilliant from Bowyer and his Boys.
