Has Bowyer lost it?

  • Don't think there was much else Bows could do today tbh.

We are clearly missing crowds at home.
As someone said in the match thread, no crowds at home are probably saving his bacon, Danish bacon.

I just think Bowyer is a shit coach, a Charlton legend BUT a shit coach.

May come to him with more experience but it will keep us in L1, along with shit refs and pub teams of course!

You don’t get promoted out of this league if you’re a shit coach...
Honestly trying to work out if this is a joke.

Tell me what league players from that winning team are playing in now.

You've still got to do the job for sure, but considering that XI are all championship and above quality you should be getting promoted.

Bowyer will moan about worldies being scored against us but the only reasonis because we back off every single time and invite other teams to shoot from just outside the box. That defending for the third today was nothing short of disgraceful.

This team are horrible to watch, we need a change if we are to have any chance of promotion.

We will miss out on top 6 with bowyer in charge and with this team and the standard of the league, it is beyond abysmal.

Okay, we disagree on things, I get that.  I am not winding up here.
Is my loyalty to Bowyer displaced? Coupled with thinking stability and Sandgaard's view of Bowyer so wrong.

You do if you have a squad of players that have proved they were far too good for this league. And could only scrape through in the play-offs.
Reckon we should sack him and bring in a L1 stalwart like Steve Evans.
I always said he's earned until the end of the season. Lets see in May.
  • I really hoped we'd turned a corner last week.

Having no crowd at The Valley is the only thing keeping him in the job at the moment

The decision not to sign a single defensively minded player (let alone an actual defender) in January when we conceded 20 goals in 12 games in December and January will lose Bowyer his job. It might not happen before the end of the season, but the defence, and his reckless attitude to doing anything about it, has written off any prospect of promotion in what is a substandard league.

A couple of big clubs will get relegated from the championship and only 3 from Portsmouth, Hull, Peterborough, Doncaster, Lincoln and Sunderland can go up. It's not magically going to turn into a cake walk next season.

Do you not think the performances would be better of we had a crowd at the Valley.

How many games have you been to where that north end of the ground, covered, west and east have literally dragged those players over the line?

If that’s true, in mid Feb, it’s an absolute disgrace.
    Yup.

Accrington are going to overtake us by scoring more than two points in their 4 games in hand.

Every team above us have more points and games in hand until you get to Hull in 2nd.

And LB saying things like "it was the red card".

    I'm afraid so.
We will probably stay around 8th place but numerous points behind 6th place.  Being realistic, places 5 upwards will be MANY points in front of us.  Look at the games in hand.
On a positive spin, we score so many goals we have a small chance of getting the 6th place, but I'd not bet on it.

Those players got those moves because of their performances and growth in Bowyer’s team. Grant could barely score in the football league before he was sent on loan. Aribo came out of non-league. Taylor came from Wimbledon. Bielik had had a loan spell at Walsall.
Okay, so what about the players this year then? Bowyer, Gallen and Sandgaard have all said we are strong enough for top 6.

If you are giving Bowyer credit for making all those players Championship and above quality players, whys it not working for him with these players?

Probably, but it works both ways. The crowd could lift the players, but with performances like that, the crowd would've turned against Bowyer by now

I accept this is tongue in cheek, but tbf to Evans, at this level he is very good and will always get a job.

Your loyalty isn’t displaced, I get it. But What’s the point in stabilising with a manager who has been managing a losing team since December 2019?

Because the players (whatever Bowyer and Gallen say in public) mostly aren’t good enough this time around.

Four shots, Amos concedes three. Not the first time we’ve seen that sort of ratio from him. Pearce running in custard. Purrington backing off the winning goal instead of closing down.

Millar, Stockley and Aneke are the only players I am desperate to keep beyond this season. That should say something in itself.

Exactly this. Why has Maatsen regressed so much? Why did Levitt not get a look in? Matthews and Gunter are an absolute shambles now too.

That’s rewriting history. Aribo was on the fringes and improved a lot as the season went on, becoming more consistent and adding goals to his game.

Bielik clearly had talent but was also inconsistent and had to cut out errors he was making early on.

Grant came in to the team after half a season of scoring goals in League 2.

    Could go on...

I’m not saying Bowyer has to stay now, but he did a great job putting that squad together while working under RD and we were only 3 points off 2nd place by the end of that season. Had we started that season with that squad we might have gone up automatically.

Things have definitely changed in the dressing room for me, and in a good way in my mind.

Look like a good honest bunch who are really not getting the rub of the green at the moment.
Need to hang in there and hope things will change.

  • We've been garbage since the previous Gillingham fixture and shipped loads of goals. It seems unlikely anything will change before the end of the season.

If we continue playing like this until the end of the season then LB has to go - it would be nonsensical to leave him in charge.

Maatsen couldn’t stop giving the ball away.

Levitt couldn’t get another EFL loan and has ended up going to Croatia to get minutes.

Matthews played well in a team that spent 90% of the time on the back foot last season but can’t cope in a team that is expected to dominate going forward - turns out we now know why Sunderland didn’t want him.

Gunter has been solid at right back - filling in at centre back has been shaky but there haven’t been better options.

Or maybe that’s just the players we were left with once the transfer embargo got lifted while under a wage cap.

As @Scoham said, these players from two years ago weren’t superstars before they arrived in SE7 but they definitely had untapped talent that Bowyer and co helped bring out.

If I had to compare this season’s squad, the phrase “putting lipstick on a pig” comes to mind.
  • I think this is the sort of stage where you start to behind the scenes sound out Paul Cook and see if he's interested.

With most managers linked or who realistically would be interested, you can talk yourself into them doing a good job if Bowyer was to go like the Cowleys and give excuses for why they struggled at Huddersfield etc.

But Cook just seems a bit of a no brainer and has been a success everywhere he has been so far (well ignoring his very first job). Kind of like Wilder was back in the day when he was choosing between us and Shefff Utd (how different could that have been).

I'm not going to pretend to have watched his teams loads to know about his history, or how his team play but when you look at literal results, he seems like he's who you'd want if you have a decent League One team and want to get promoted.

If the right manager isn't out there, I'm not against giving Bowyer to the Summer to see what happens, I know Chris Powell worked having a bit of time with the squad before the next season but I think you've seen enough managers been able to come right in and do a job if they are good so I don't think we need to rush it... but I think the right manager is sitting right there without a club at the moment, and is only available really because of the ridiculous situation going on at Wigan
  • This is when the out crew come and post stuff ridiculing the remainers right? Sure that how it worked last week when we won.

Fair enough if that's your position, though not sure why Bowyer would put unnecessary pressure on himself by proclaiming that we are a top 6 team and anything less is failure.

Pearce is worse year on year
Purrington is worse year on year
Matthews is worse year on year
Watson is worse year on year
Gilbey is worse year on year
Morgan is worse year on year
Williams is worse year on year

Doesn't seem like Bowyer has really made anyone into a better player over the previous year.
