Post-match Thread: Peterborough v Charlton Athletic | Tue 19 Jan 2021

Gutting result. We saw out a good first half in difficult conditions, but the second half just seemed beyond us. Punished by two individual mistakes. We found it difficult to adjust to the poor pitch and wind.

Over to you.

Another defeat. Another two goals conceded. Zero attacking threat.

How many teams have better squads than us in this league?

Need to have a look at how to manage the wage cap next season.

We aren't going up and I think this season we put too much money into players in the same positions (Matthews/Gunter)

Maybe we'd have been better with our first choice centre backs, but it's too late now. Doesn't look like we can put a run together.

So frustrating to be let down by mistakes again. Didn't expect much out of the game but we've thrown that away.

How are 2 professional center backs letting the ball bounce there!? School boy stuff

Game deserved to be a 0-0.

We won a ridiculous penalty after Pearce threw himself on the floor, and then we gifted them two goals in the second half.

    Awful game.

I really struggle to identify with this team.
  • You are always going to make it hard to pick up points when you gift the opposition the types of goals we do.
  • The back line needs attention.

A good first half. Second goal for us would have killed them off for sure.

Once we conceded, heads dropped and confidence was lost again.

Even with us losing the plot after conceding, still think we were worthy for a point tonight.

Too many poor players in that back 4. Pearce and Gunter aren't good enough. Matthews is twice the player Gunter is from what I've seen. He was one of our best players in the league above last season.

I can't blame Bowyer for individual errors but theres almost a dads army clique about the selection.

Settled battling team first half, then all subs on, all over the place and no balance, second half. Bowyer hasn’t a clue how to use his subs, thinks bringing everyone on will make us better.

Szmodics scored the goal that sent me to the Europa League on FM21

I feel like I’ve been cheated on. Off to sell the bastard right now.

Very few teams will go to Peterborough and come away with points. Some massive overreactions on here.
Yeah tend to agree with this. Pearce lacks pace and is overaggressive for balls in the air. But those watching in recent weeks, and I would argue for years now, know this. Beyond that, a couple of sloppy moments on a bad pitch and we take three points. I've been very critical of Bowyer, and I think he made subs too soon, but I don't think this defeat is all down to him. Once again we had more of an identity today as we did at the weekend and second half against Rochdale. At least we seem to be beyond that complete lack of gameplan and identity.

That said, once Famewo is back (and he has some problems with the high ball as well), if Pearce is still picked like he was ahead of Sarr last season, I'll have issue with Bowyer's selection. Already have a lot of questions of picking Gunter ahead of Matthews.

As you clearly want to say “bowyer out”, can you let me know what he did for us to lose tonight?
  • Pearce is the grim reaper.
Win and clean sheet on Saturday, so he comes straight back in. Why?

Pitch aside we are just not good enough. You can't fault us for trying tonight but this squad is very , very average.

The defending was comical with both goals . Peterborough aren't going up either . We gifted them their goals.

There is still half the season to go but we aren't a top six side i'm afraid.

Pearce walks back into the team, after we keep a clean sheet without him, and is at fault for yet another goal. Drop him for good, strip him of the armband, he isn't good enough.

I don't know if it's lockdown, and being unable to go to matches, but I feel such a lack of affinity to so many of these players. Maybe it's because they're all randoms and loans again, but genuinely couldn't give a shit if half of them never played for us again.

There's no chance we get promoted this season. That set of players just don't have it in them. Soft, full of mistakes, lack of passion, barely seem to care. Sick of it.

Bowyer isn't to blame for player errors.

Thought the team fought really well today, overall.

We are clearly lacking in a couple of departments, so we will see where players returning from injury and new acquisitions put us in a few weeks; then we'll have more of an idea how our season is going to pan out.

Tonight's just a night to forget.  We move on.

    Pearce time to fuck off

  • We just have to wait until our first choice CBs come back and then all will be okay. Hopefully they'll be back by the end of the season.

Worth trying out another defensive formation for the next game.

But for 2 gifted goals we take 3 points tonight.

It was a hard-working team performance and they must be gutted about that. But when we did go 2 - 1 down, I was disappointed that we had no attacking play. Nothing stuck to Aneke, balls were sloppy, silly fouls were given away and we let P'boro run down the clock. We lost all composure.

There were a lot of positives to take from the first 65 minutes but its hard to be positive after losing in such a stupid way. Again.

If a decent forward had been on the end of those lovely crosses early in the second half and Gunther had buried the header it would have been game over. We badly need our two best center halves back but we also need some decent forwards.

We simply aren’t good enough to gift teams goals and expect to get anything out of a game. The defending for the first goal was an absolute disgrace - no surprise to see Pearce involved again. Need to get it sorted at Centre Back or we will be lucky to finish in the top 10.

Smyth is a waste of a loan space.

Shout out the jokers asking to players to play in their real positions. What was our problem? Defence. What has been our problem, defence.

    Pretty much agree.
I will add that starting BOTH of our worst forwards and then bringing on our best 2 to chase a game is debatable

Both goals Peterborough scored were a joke, why leave ourself open to a break like that when we are winning away, totally unprofessional.

Awful pitch, terrible ref who just let players cheat and get away with it. Felt like I was watching two Sunday league teams on a Sunday league pitch with a Sunday league ref.
