Post-match Thread: Charlton v Portsmouth | Tues 2nd Feb 2021

First thing’s first: this thread will not be for the weak of heart.

First half was not good. But we were still in it at halftime.

We looked more fluid going forward in the second half with Millar, particularly. Great that Stockley got off the mark. Not sure how he gets to some of the balls he does, controls and lays them off, but it will prove a great help if we’re able to get a grip on the second half of the season. Our problems stem from poor defending, as always. To concede two in a short spell of time meant that any comeback was not to be.

Over to you.

  • Bowyer's post match interview is going to be fun.

Who is getting the blame tonight? Perm any 3 or 4 from 15.

But I know one man who won't take any blame.

Think Gallen has done us wonders in the window, this Andy cannon guy looks the real deal.

We were the team in white, right?
  • A good individual performance from Stockley but complete rubbish elsewhere.

Can’t remember a side that was consistently underperforming for as long as this one has been.

Bowyer surely gets the record for most subs at half time and that’s not a good record to have.

This result was not that much different from what I expected. We are just not that good and even when we started well, a study of the data showed we were in a temporarily state of overperformance. We’ve not won two in a row since November 3rd, 2020.

I hope Gallen is already scouting out some permanent replacements for the summer cuz we are gonna need them all over the pitch.

Last time we were here Bowyer had:

Bauer - A top 3 CB in the league
Bielik - The best footballer in the league
    Cullen - Machine
Taylor - The best Striker in the league
Phillips - Possibly the best keeper in the league.
Aribo - A dynamic forward thinking CM (such a luxury for this league)

He had so much quality, surrounded by hard workers and grafters. (Pearce/Purrington/Dijksteel/Parker)

I’m not Bowyer out, but I do think we’re at a stage where we have to question if he’s the right manager for us now. I don’t know where I stand.

I hate to say "I told you so" but that entire match was kind of a Leuth Was Right object-lesson. Bowyer gets one (1) game with Jaiyesimi imo
  • one of the worst performances of the season. Glad we used the transfer window so well
  • Utter rubbish from start to finish. Sorry Bowyer but it’s time to go
  • Can we still blame Bogle?

I just want to see us put in a good performance over 90 minutes, that’s all
  • I'm sure people will point to individuals mistakes, but we lost the game before a ball was even kicked.

Dropped our two best attacking players.

Changed a formation that was working, to one that hadn't for us.

Its no shock we put in a familiar poor performance.

Really feels like Watson has only come here this season to pick up a wage, just doesn't look bothered
  • LB needs to go - he is clueless.

It’s just getting boring now, I’m resigned to mid table mediocrity this season. It’s painful to watch.
  • Stockley the only positive tonight and he's not even ours.

  • Not just poor defending, poor tactics, poor formation, poor midfield, poor team selection, poor management etc etc

4 wins in our last 17
0 home wins in the last 5
2 or more goals conceded 9 times in the last 11 games
17 goals conceded in our last 6 at home

It’s unacceptable. As I said in the match thread, it would be difficult to find a manager who would do worse with this squad.

Going nowhere until famewo and Inniss are back. When that might be or how long they will be fit for will determine how close we get to the playoffs, imo. Don't think we will make them.

That is it for me.... We could have played for another 2 days and wpn't score.  I have acepted season is over for us tonight. We have to play the top 1- in our final run and we can't beat anyone.  What is Bow's record until tonight?  Is it 2 wins in 20?  What is Paul Cook doing nowadays?
  • Surprised we lost as @Redrobo posted this week we wouldn't lose again this season.

Well played Stockley. You look a proper player.

Why did we drop our goalscorer and success story from the last game - the left hand side?

I asked this in the match thread: Arrogant or Naïve or Tinker-obsessed?

The worry for me is that we haven't looked at it for months. Even when we win it's never convincing.

Another classic naive performance from the selection to play on the pitch.
    Something has to change.

Would another manager be getting more from this squad of players? I think so.

  • 4 wins in our last 17
0 home wins in the last 5
2 or more goals conceded 9 times in the last 11 games
17 goals conceded in our last 6 at home

    We'll probably find one...

    That was wank.

Get rid of basically everyone whose contract is up in the summer. Watson; Pratley; Pearce - they're too old and too slow. We won't be able to retain the loanees, and frankly I'd rather we signed players for the long term.

Other teams like Accrington can outperform the wage cap, and we've always thought Gallen has been shrewd. With or without Bowyer - honestly indifferent at this point - we should be able to compete next year with the right moves.

I've resigned myself to a decent but non-promotion finish and am looking ahead to 2021/22. Very surprised I'm so detached with so long to go in the season.
