    SAINTS EXIT

    By Robert Thomson

St Johnstone skipper Jason Kerr is set to complete a £600,000 move to Wigan.

The 24-year-old started the day heading to London to sign for Charlton, but their League One rivals came in with a last-gasp rival bid to snap him up.

Kerr, who captained Saints to a League Cup and Scottish Cup double last season, is in the final year of his deal at McDiarmid Park.

And with that in mind, Saints chairman Steve Brown has decided to cash in and take the money on offer.

Kerr came through the Saints youth setup, having signed for the Perth club as a 16-year-old, and will go down in history as one of their greatest skippers following last season’s heroics.

Wigan have been beset by off-field problems in recent seasons but have found stability under new owner Talal Mubarak Al-Hammad so are now one of the most ambitious clubs in League One.

Arter, done deal season long loan ✍️✍️

Reckon this is Charlton using the media to send Gillingham a message:

"Do a deal with us on Dempsey in the next couple of hours or we'll trigger our back up arrangement"
I advocated Dempsey months ago .. Arter would be a good alternative IF he is fit .. he's had a few issues lately
I would prefer to sign permanently a younger, hungrier (and I'm not talking penis sandwiches) local player to an injury prone, overpaid & into his 30's loanee.
agreed .. but your ideal would cost a lot of MONEY .. is Sandy prepared to pay for a Dempsey type ? .. we will see
I doubt Arter's wages are cheap and I also doubt Forest will pay 95% of them.

Also a player you SIGN and not LOAN is worth something, even if it means not having to replace them next summer.

Or have we not learnt anything from the past few years.

If we were in poll position and looking likley, how has it never been mentioned, except by the Dundee local rag?

Meh, is CB a position we should be spending £600k on? Nah

what was discussed a while back and seems now to be forgotten is the expense of living in London or the South East .. a (say) £200,000 salary goes a looooooooottt further in the midlands or the north than dahn sarf. Many very decent players probably want a higher wage to live and work in London than a  L1 club (e.gl. us) is prepared to, pay
If only we had a riverside apartment we could put them up in....

He paid for Kirk, so I don't see lack of funds being the problem.

Perhaps we should have gone into administration last year instead of being saved by Sandgaard. Hasn't hurt Wigan it seems.

    Sandgaard out  !!!!

    Joke btw.......

Seems unlikely given we went to the hassle of arranging for Arter to watch Saturday’s game.

Arter is also more of a defensive midfielder while Dempsey’s a goalscoring midfielder, and Lee appears to have taken up that role.

If one accepts the storey it at least means we were again paying good money for a player.

Kerr to Wigan isn’t new. They have been tracking him since early in the window but could never get a deal done.
  • Are there anymore Matt Smiths out there…we could try them all

This is the problem with leaving it deliberately till the last few hours. It all becomes a rush and you leave yourself at risk of getting gazumped with nowhere to go.

St Johnstone fans seem to think he’s a seven figure fee type of player and that 600k is a steal.

Seems like a good price for a 24 year old CB who was in the Scottish Prem team of the season last year

If we paid good money we’d have probably got him… But yes if you believe it we were still looking for permanent signings costing decent amounts.

    We might have offered £100k
  • Decent of Wigan to let more players again have the opportunity to play for them

and they're not buying their way out of the Division

Indeed - would like to know how much we offered. It’s says “blown Charlton out the water”. Wigan didn’t need to do that, they could have just offered 1p more than us to be the highest bidder. What happened is St Johnstone have £600k, Wigan said yes and we said no.

We haven't tried the one at Millwall yet.
