Our second most attacking player by average position today, behind only Mason Burstow. Effectively being deployed as a winger in all but name.

Part of the problem of the 'wing-back' position in a nutshell. Looks so disjointed with massive gaps at the back.
Go look at Wigan or Rotherham’s maps and you will see the same thing. Yet the apparent massive gaps at the back aren’t being exploited against them.

We are defensively better under Jackson playing three at the back (32 conceded from 30, 1.06 goals per game) than we were under Adkins playing four at the back (23 conceded from 13, 1.77 goals per game).

Part of me wishes Jacko would spend a couple of these upcoming games playing four at the back just to prove it isn’t the formation that’s the issue…

Bringing up goals conceded per game after shipping 3 goals to Morecambe.

Yep, he was nowhere to be seen for Morecambe's 1st goal.
Famewo got dragged to left back, Pearce got dragged across to cover Famewo and we had a massive hole where you would usually have 2 centre halves.

That will happen with wing backs at every level of football if playing the fluid 3-5-2, If CBT have been attacking and the counter attack happens quickly then the left sided CB covers on the left, and the other two, Pearce and Clare move to the middle with the right wing back Matthews staying back.
Problem is Matthews just like Purrington are fine going forward but don't have the pace to get back.

Corey Blackett-Taylor has two good feet and can goes past people on both sides. I expect JJ to realize he is too important to our attacking to waste his energy running back 25 times a game when our attacks break down.

CBT and George Dobson are the two big success stories of this mediocre season.
The only two from cafc I would buy if I was a Championship manager/owner.
  • Adkins' team had to play more of the top sides.
With half a squad but that doesn't matter apparently.

What does matter is Cafc POTY George Dobson wasn't deemed good enough for the defensive position by Nigel Adkins because Ben Watson had to play as he was the best player in training. Nigel said this on Zoom.
Ben Watson had had a fine career but by the time he came to Cafc the game has moved on and even League 1 players need some pace.

Dobson played in the 4 games we lost to the top teams at the start of the season.  Watson only played in 2 of them.....

When we played Wigan we literally had 3 fit center mids, Dobson, Watson and Morgan.  Watson had no preseason because he had Covid.  Those are facts, which ever way you spin it.  Jackson, Klopp, Pep, Clough or Shankly would have struggled with what we had.

Adkins should have turned it round, he didn't so he was rightfully sacked but to extrapolate the results back to the start of the season isn't a fair comparison.  No matter how many people true and do it, it doesn't make it true.

Ok 7 teams in the top half of the table but also Accrington, Lincoln, Fleetwood, Gillingham, Cheltenham and Crewe.

And the 4 of them he lost is the reason he, rightfully, got sacked.

  • I think Accrington were top half back then (could be wrong).
  • The amazing thing is the two players who were least likely to be a success were CBT who paid to come here for a trial and George Dobson POTY who didn't make it at Sunderland and does have a laboured running style but now has the confidence to get onto goal scoring positions.

Bowyer started his season with a midfield of Watson, Vennings and Oztumer and still managed a draw against Sunderland.

Not sure what season you are talking about, but if you mean the promotion season, we lost 2-1 and Watson wasn't at the club.

  • Well that was late September as I recall and the first of many successive clean sheets.
  • Bet Tranmere are questioning why they released him ;)

Makes sense. Gone from being a squad player to one of the first names on the team sheet. Him and Dobbo both deserve an increase for becoming key players in the team.
  • I would imagine that given the stop start nature of his career to date, he would probably be keen to consolidate his progress and that will mean staying with us for another season at least. There would be a greater risk of stalling going somewhere else.
  • “In the last weeks and months he’s been outstanding. His game has really improved. He’s growing into that wing-back position now, he’s finding much better positions to receive the ball and defensively he’s putting a shift in. He’s finding ways to get on the ball much better now than when he first started playing there, so that’s credit to him and the work that he’s done with my staff to improve that side of his game."

Is it just me or has he improved since Skiverton has been here?

Current squad is probably going to finish five or six places lower than we did that season!
  • If only we'd got CBT instead of André Green.

Don't forget the window hadn't closed at that point, so we were still making signings. Gunter, Bogle, Inniss, Matthews, Shinnie, Maatsen and Smyth hadn't been signed yet, while Maddison had just arrived.
Plus we had Chuks, Morgan and Williams on the bench.
  • Any idea why he was pulled from the starting 11?

Transfer talks with Chelsea. 1.6m plus a loan back, burstow drove him hence his exclusion

Taken ill after the warm up just before the teams were to come out.
