I’d be demanding a refund from BG for this.  I have mine through Corgi and they state that the check itself costs £60. Had mine refunded when they couldn’t attend during covid.
My Mum had same problem with BG contract. Even the engineers who eventually came were poor and could not fix problems. Have just gone to a local Kidbrooke firm who were recommended and cancelled BG.
  • I would urge anybody that is facing financial hardship to have a conversation, or several conversations with their energy supplier. I do appreciate that some like British Gas, seem to be overwhelmed by the situation.

We have applied for the warm home discount scheme, and been supported by Octopus as we have a terraced victorian house, and there is a limitation on heat saving , besides insulation, and  better quality windows/doors, when you have a poly carbon roof on your conservatory, and an 18 year old boiler as in our particular case. Despite considerable research, we have been trying to get. a new boiler with any grants towards a replacement, not for 'free' but an allowance towards a new boiler. Despite talk, they are very difficult to obtain, unless you want a charge against your house, which we will not consider.
Surely, making your home as efficient as possible has to be a primary target on a national campaign.

We have obtained some free heated blankets from Octopus, being over 70, and having had one  knee cap replacement  this  July, with the other knee cap to be replaced in ????????, mainly due to playing football/tennis as a youngster, and running football teams in my 40's, but then that was my choice!.

My heart goes out to folk who are struggling, especially with young families, and those poor folk with medical equipment  to run, hopefully they are getting some assistance. ?.
As I started off by mentioning, speak to your local council and  energy supplier, and seek advice from relevant agencies such as citizens advice, there will  be a  process to go through but you can but ask?

Apparently British Gas has financial access to funds,..... its just a pity they have failed to keep my  boiler service appointment twice this year that I pay £250 plus through there 'Home care agreement' because they have a staff shortage!. I could have paid for a new boiler in the time I have lived here in subscriptions.

Seriously, ditch your Homecare cover as soòn as you can. It is now a disgrace and BG are  taking money under false pretences for it.

Have a look around for a small firm who will provide cover for you. You never know they may even answer the phone when you call for help!
  • Anyone reckon any other companies that are cheaper?

Afraid you are right, BG seem to have had a 'melt down' feel very let down as we have been a customer  on this scheme for decades, it was first class years ago, but times change I guess.

  • I'm on the capped tariff with Octopus and yet your's is cheaper. (Unless I'm mistaken).
Are you on a fixed tariff?

  • Don't know where you live or how you pay, but potentially the per KW rates look to be above the price cap.
  • Last month £200, this month £573.

Same as me. Was a happy satisfied customer for years - call in the morning and they'd be round the same day. But this last few years their "service" has gone to pot.

I could write a book on the way they mucked me about in the last few years. Missed appointments, incompetent administration, on-line systems that didn't work, impossible to contact by phone (or just about any other way).

Final straw for me was when a radiator went wrong in our lounge - so no heat in there - and the first appointment they could give was 3 weeks time. The day before they were due to arrive they phoned to cancel and, not apologising, just said we can fit you in in a further 3 weeks. Let's just say I wasn't best pleased.

Wrote to the Chief Executive when my contract was up, explained why I wasn't going to renew it and listed all the problems I had had. Gave me £100 as even they realised they had failed me badly.

The internet is full of people with similar stories.

If you have had a bad experience, write to the Chief Executive as well and demand compensation. You might get something. I can give you the address I wrote to if you want it. (Even that is hidden away and hard to find).

No, I’m not on a fixed CE, I think it was more expensive.

  • On a slightly different subject. Today I paid £1.63 per litre of diesel from an independent garage, our local Asda is charging £1.80.

I'm starting to think that we are getting the piss takn out of us regarding fuel. Surely the government needs to start taking urgent action to manage this cost of living crisis. Think we need an uprising 😤
The government will drag out any intervention for as long as possible. They are making money out of the high prices.
The government don’t make money. It’s all spent on public services.

    It’s indirect tax. That’s all.
  • Sorry MIA, I've looked properly this time.
I'm with Octopus, having been moved over when Avro went bust & am on the ex-Avro price cap scheme.

    Gas 10.01
    SC 25.56

    Elec 34.09
    SC 30.01.

So a bit cheaper than you, which may be to do with being ex Avro.

The VAT revenues are naturally spent where the government see fit but the higher the prices the greater the VAT revenues. They (we) are skint and keeping VAT receipts as high as possible as long as possible is very much in the government’s interest.

Surely it is in our interest though to have enough money to pay for a decent NHS. Half our kids will get cancer in their life-time and they deserve better.

I don't really believe the government put VAT receipts into their coffers so they can spend it on garden parties and expensive holidays!

Exactly. The government isn't a profit centre. It spends all that it gets and borrows more. Ultimately for our collective benefit (whatever party is in power).

When it becomes too expensive for Joe public / demand tapers etc. they will need to react - but that will then require tax to be raised elsewhere.

But back on topic - prices at the pumps appear to have dropped a little in the last week it seems.

Prices seem to vary so much by area - I live in Northern Ireland, about 30 minutes from the border with ROI, I filled up this week at £1.48 in a town near the border, in my town the prices are around £1.57-60 for the last week or so. I haven't seen a pump at or around £1.80 for at least a month, maybe longer.

I realise that governments don’t have any intention of pissing tax receipts up the wall (Johnson’s excepted) but when the country is groaning under the burden of, well, high prices on everything, then it is within the government’s ability to relieve some of that pressure on households and businesses by means of easing the tax burden on absolute essentials. It can be a short sharp intervention in the expectation of things naturally improving or something else but doing nothing shouldn’t be an option. Winter hasn’t really kicked in yet and I think when it does a there will be a lot of very angry worried people.

Today it's still 180.7 in our local Asda, not come down at all over the last 2 or 3 weeks. No need as there isn't any real competition . Compared to 163.5 I paid in Wrexham where there is competition from Independents.

I still think the government should step in a control the price for the next 12 months.
  • Well of course intervention would be welcome and appreciated by us all.

But purely based on the budget it seems they believe they can’t afford to as the support on our  bills is to be withdrawn / scaled back.

I see no prospect of that changing (unfortunately) until the Ukraine situation improves. It’s crap it really is.

    A report by BOXT.

The same BOXT [Bosch/Worcester boilers] who are desperately flogging new energy saving boilers?

Thus not paying the highest electricity prices in the world, I’m not saying the reports wrong, but the source is hardly free from bias.

Most homes in U.K. are gas fired central heating. Not much of the electricity used domestically can be laid at the door of gas central heating. I don’t really see an angle for BOXT to push an agenda pointing out high electricity prices to promote sales of their gas boilers.
  • I went to Denmark this  week and  i noticed that diesel was cheaper than petrol and both were cheaper than what I pay in South London.
  • I thought I'd bump this thread after a week of extremely cold weather.
As like others I'm sure I've had some rooms heated and others not if not using them.
But is it  any good for your health?
Now have chesty cough and shivers.
I could be going from one room that's 20c odd out to the kitchen to make a cup of tea in a room that might be 13c at times.

Paid an eye watering £26 on Tuesday for gas and electric. To be fair it wasn't helped with the wife leaving the underfloor heating on 25 degrees in the conservatory overnight grrr. Still been around £20 each day since Sunday. Ridiculas, I feel so sorry for those people who cannot afford it, it must be so worrying :(.
  • I've been running up between £12 & £19 daily this week.
