  • I can't buy in to JJ the savior yet, or any time soon. We saw the same impact when Adkins took over, and look what happened.

Let's wait until JJ has to deal with adversity, injury crises, other managers working out our tactics, etc. That's when you can judge a manager, anything before that can just be the 'bounce'.
Saint Jonny is definitely not the saviour.

    He's the messiah.

    Subtle difference.

  • Great clean sheet win today! Looking forward to Tuesday #cafc

  • Just out of interest, what were the studio comments like from curbs and all?, did they elude to what they think the differences are in any detail. I’m guessing the mood was considerably better!!🤣

I'm still fascinated by our defensive shape, and the amount it relies on players subtly changing roles, especially Ben Purrington.

At the end of the 2018/19 when he would get forward a lot - something Jacko cleared remembered - yet so far we haven't been caught out on our left defensively, with Purrington stranded up field.
Three CBs, a DM, players who track back and our higher more aggressive press are all playing a part.

Replace Purrington, Gilbey and Dobson with Soaure, Morgan and Watson then it’s not going to be so effective.

I’d be looking to bring in more fit, energetic and mobile players in January if we can move a few on. Got to avoid bringing in more Watson’s, Arter’s and Gunter’s, too many in a team especially in more attacking roles limits us so much.
I’d be cautious of writing off anyone who has previously been disappointing this season, particularly ones like Arter who we’ve only seen play a small number of times, when not fully fit, and all in Adkins’ broken system. It is hard to see how Watson would work in the current system but Arter for Dobson, Morgan for Lee, and Clare for Gilbey - all of those could potentially be effective replacements. If we had to switch out all three at once that’d be a problem but in a confident team that is overall playing well and understands its system even those players who have struggled so far are far more likely to do well in those circumstances.

The one player I really don’t see a role for in the current team is Kirk. Doubt he can play in the Purrington role so unless he can be adapted to play deeper and more centrally like Lee has been then I don’t see where he can get back into the team.

The jist of it was picking out that JJ hasn't had a lot of time but clearly prioritised working on our play without the ball. Curbs said it has made us more defensively solid and commented on how vulnerable we looked before. Also praise for the midfielders.

They alluded to Ipswich being with us a few games ago and putting a run together and getting to mid table and suggesting we can do that in the next few games and then it all looks different. I was watching the cricket at the time so probably missed a lot.

  • so far so revolutionary by the players who just couldn't or wouldn't play for Adkins.
Tuesday will be a major test against the Millers, a big strong outfit which plays good football while taking no prisoners
A return to the valley for Richard Wood and Michael Smith, one giant at the back, the other at the front, two more players we let go too early without giving them a real chance to shine

Albie is going to have to improve his shooting and score some goals if he is going to replace Lee.
  • The thing is, the attitude has almost certainly changed in that the players will be looking forward to the Rotherham game, rather than dreading it. The same is probably true for us fans too.

Unfortunately missed the game, due to personal reasons.

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

Also hope we get some better extended highlights.
Well there's ten minutes on Charlton TV if you're a subscriber (although in reality it's less than that due to the replays) which includes Famewo's spoonfoot incident,  the Purrington & Lee goalmouth scramble, the one Stockley headed straight at the keeper etc. By the way, who is it that does that lovely little backheel to Stockley for the cross to Gilbey in the last bit of the highlights, Purrington or Washington?

Most importantly (for both players and fans actually) is that IF we do lose to not let that derail the progress being made. We've looked much better in the last two games yes but we are not going to win them all.

At this point of the season, we shouldn't look at the table and focus on each game as it comes. Can we beat Rotherham? Yes we can and then we are on a bona fide run. How many games will this run be? We shall see but I always look at the performances. You win tight game after tight game and you can't sustain a run. You play with dominance and control and you will.

Saturday was probably as dominant you get when it comes to Charlton. That is unusual in itself and something real for us to cling to.

Tuesday's game is massive. If we want to catch the top 6, we have to play them and beat them - we won Saturday but the gap is still 12 points so this is a big opportunity, as are the next 2 home games after - win them and its game on - lose them and its season over - i think we can, and will, win them
