There really is a load of old bollocks being spoken here. Does anybody really think that these players are not trying, they are playing for their livelyhoods.and contracts,it wont be much fun being out of work at their age. Every attacking option we have is gone,no strikers ,CBT and Fraser not available, will someone please explain what JJ can actually do. Dont say defend better if the ball continually comes back, pressure will always tell in the end. When our midfield do get on the ball, just what options do they have,no one up front to aim at,no one to hold the ball up and allow them to get forward. Who do we cross to,plenty of moans about not crossing the ball, but who is there that is going to get on the end,Morgan takes a good corner, and has had some success, now nothing, every corner easily cleared. If and when we get Stockley and his mates back, this will be a different side. Please feel fit to take the piss out of my comments as you see fit,but I am convinced this will all change when we have some of our attacking options back.
You can literally see the lack of effort from the stands. Barely any pressure on the opposition, losing the ball and not tracking back, no one busting a gut to support a break, players hiding from the ball. There was a point last night when Dobson had the ball and he threw his arms up in frustration as no one was doing anything to show for him.
These players are not giving 100% and I can only assume those who they think they are are people who simply check the score, rather than watching the match.
You are wrong in your assumption I do watch the games, pretty difficult to support a break when there are not too many, and as I stated, the ball will not stick up front to allow the midfielders to support. We started last night quite brightly, but as the game wore on,the players who initially where in and around their box, got tired as there is always constant pressure on them to have to rush back to defend. Time and time again, our attacks are easily picked off by their defence and turned very quickly in to offensive moves. Gilbey for all his lack of possession on the ball did not stop running all game, the same for Albie. The hardest part of any football match ,is doing the hard yards if you do not have much of the ball, inevitably as games wear on,that becomes more difficult, unfortunately we do not have many options on the bench so players will play on when they should be subbed,Burstow should have been subbed last night before he got injured. Why do you assume other people dont watch the games just because their views are different to yours.
Interesting that. Jackson talking about identifying MK Dons' attacking preferences, watching out for passes played between the wingback and the RCB (which we failed to deal with). I wonder what MK Dons' coaching staff would have pointed out for us? Probably nothing, just focused on their attacking play because there's nothing to watch out for with us. We have no patterns of play, no discernible plan. We just prod the ball forward and hope the next person takes responsibility to making things happen. Teams must love playing us because we're not even chaotic, just predicatable, slow and seemingly not drilled at all in attacking phases
I appreciate that any team is going to miss their top 3 strikers........but any decent footballer knows how to shoot.
No shots on target. You won't win any games with that stat, no matter how good you defend.
First thing Jackson has to do is to get the players to shoot. Get the wingers (fuck wingbacks - go back to 4 4 2) to put in decent crosses & the central midfielders to put in passes that made their first goal.
And dont put Kanu on the bench if you are then going to throw DJ up front.
DJ & Leko arent going to score. Might as well put a defender up there & use their height.
I say it quite often - coaching badges aren't worth a light.
First of all, you probably have never played as or recognised what a forward does. He not only scores goals but he holds the ball up, something Leko is not able to do, a forward also is able to keep pressure on the opposing side by their runs off the ball, look at Taylor on Saturday and he got two goals simply from his movement without the ball. The players who are fit are not the type of forward that we are missing and the youngsters are eighteen months away from being able to make a difference.
For the “change the shape” gang, I agree changing things has to happen in principle when things are not going well. But in this instance how will this improve things?
If we play 442 or 433 we have to revert to Matthews/Gunter at right back, the two most slagged off players in the squad. Is that what you really want? And having no senior forwards doesn’t suddenly change just because the formation has, we will still be toothless, and still be dodgy at the back with a bunch of unmotivated players.
You're right, we don't have the personnel for 442, which in itself is pretty damning. It is an easier, more basic system though. I reckon if Curbs was here, he'd be returning us to basics. Two banks of four. Full backs supporting wingers and vice versa and everyone knowing their roles.
Think I'd rather we played Charlie Barker than Matthews or Gunter, but whatever, the current system isn't working. I know we don't have 2 strikers, unless you count Kanu, but we have some on loan we could recall. Even Davison would be better than Leko.
Some might say that when we lost 11-1 to Aston Villa They may have been our worst team-Bro. Or worst managed
least we effin' scored
True, to be fair though keeper Willie Duff went off with a broken ginger and both Don Townsend (Andy’s Dad) and then Stuart Leary had a go in goal;
To add injury to insult, Charlton lost ‘keeper Duff on the hour mark as he broke a finger failing to stop Hitchens’ fifth and Villa’s sixth goal.
Left-back Don Townsend deputised in goal - with Duff later returning to the field to play left wing - then the makeshift stopper reportedly gave up in disgust after conceding three, with striker Stuart Leary taking a turn between the sticks.
There are two under 23 strikers available (loaned out?) Wassim Aouachria and Hadt Ghandour. Both are big and mobile - worth a place on the bench?
Was thinking that earlier. If neither don’t get selected on Saturday, I would wonder why we still have them under contract. Surely time must come to make a decision to use them or let them go.
Stockley got injured, we started losing. Chucks came in, we started winning. Chucks and stockley now injured, we are losing again. As everyone knows, no presence up top is killing us. Howevcer, i was watching our midfield again last night and it was reminiscent of one of the last night games under Atkins - not one of them was marking a player when we didbn't have the ball and quite often morgan was on the other side of the pitch to where he was meant to be - football must have 'advanced' to allow this zonal type of approach but if i was manager it wouldn't be happening. Don't start me on Morgan generally - tries hard but just isn't good enough.
Are there any forwards on a free that we could bring in on a short term? I think we've touched this topic before but we desperately need some help. Even of the Bogle level (but he's a big man at Hartlepool atm).
One other thing about MKD,first side I have seen this year that did not go rolling all over the floor when in front,as for Lewington, what a credit to his proffession to be able to dominate a game like that at his age.
Agreed, I thought they were a credit to this division. Excellent passing and moving, didn't collapse on the floor when touched. Indeed MK Dons are a club I have very mixed feelings about, as while it was a disgrace the way they were formed, they are also a really well run club.
Young managers playing progressive football, and sticking to that style when a new manager is appointed Run to a sensible budget, hence they regularly lose players to "bigger" clubs, but always find decent replacements

Agree to the first bit - I played all my Sunday League football at fullback. So your second point doesn't stand up as I've defended against many a "forward" and have seen close up their all round play.
But less about me. All I can say after years of playing and almost 50 years of watching football is that a striker's main job is to score. End of. Leko & DJ have shown that if they even had the hold up play of Taylor they wouldn't have finished like he did on Saturday.

I just find it hard to believe that anyone who's watching atm could think that the entire team is giving 100%

Only the players themselves can tell you that,I do agree that at times one or two look as if they could do a bit more, but as a whole some of the criticism they get I feel is a bit over the top.
MacG: he's not good enough but he wasn't at fault last night Gunter: he's not good enough but he was only partly at fault last night Lavelle: slow, slight, squad player at best Famewo : eratic, lousy distribution Dobson; industrious, dedicated, finds decent passes, doesn't deserve to be drowning in this shit Matthews: inept but doesn't hide Gilbey; the invisible man. Captain?!? shameful Morgan: willing, often wants the ball, eratic, dead balls are poxy F-Castillo: pulled his punches last night, if he thinks that's acceptable he can go back Burstow: made the best of the scraps tossed his way, bit more experience and he scores Leko: inept and disinterested DJ: capable but lazy and disinterested Referee: best we've had in a while in SE7 - that is a very low bar Opposition : diligent, negative on the whole, able and concentrated in both boxes
Lee: never has his head up, takes far too many touches, seems to have no instinct/vision, doesn't hide tho which elevates him in this low company

8087 present yet people couldn’t buy a ticket. FFS!!! Club is run by amateurs
?? We bought our two tickets online at around 17.00 yesterday, sat where we wanted - Just behind Jacko, his body language was depressing - hope he can do a SCP.
At the moment we need an extra defensive midfielder to try and help us track runs as the through ball low or high catches our flat footed defence out time and time again. No point having two up front when they are both shit anyway.

Thinking about it, I'm not sure we have another defensive midfielder.
Arter went back, Watson is hopeless in that role, Dempsey is in Scotland, Henry is more a creative player, ditto John.
I think we probably need to use Dobson in that role until we get a striker or two back. Then we play (I know it isn't great) Watson in Dobson's old role or maybe Gilbey could adapt to it. We need something short term as we currently have a defensive weakness that a village idiot can work around.
Football-wise it's lowest I've felt as a Charlton fan.
Teams are coming to The Valley and just taking the piss. I've always identified with us being a team that are workmanlike, brave and hard to beat, even when we have bad players. Now we have bad players who are none of those things.
I’ll be honest, bar a brief period under Powell who sought those characteristics, I don’t think we’ve identified as that since Curbs and Lennie days. The complete opposite I think.
Yep, in the last ten years or so other than the Powell era you’ve mentioned and at times Bowyer with the likes of Taylor, Cullen, Bauer etc we have looked soft and genuinely quite pathetic.
Some of the players that have played for us genuinely piss me off, too many to list but I’d say in the past decade around 70-80% of the players wearing this kit haven’t been up to what our standard should be, we have become a bit of a joke and seen as an ‘easy ride’ club imo
On reflection of the game, I’ll firmly place myself in the ‘Jacko isn’t up to it’ camp. He’s on record saying we need to add height, what does he do? plays a formation catered for ball winners in the box. Square pegs in round holes, just like the last handful of Charlton managers. It’s almost like we are cursed with managers who are terrified of taking risks.
Out of this lot only Dobson, Clare, Stockley, Famewo (hilarious people think he isn’t), Washington, Fraser and maybe Mac are good enough for us. Players like DJ, Lavelle, Aneke, Purrington and Innis are good enough for rotation and bench/impact options.
Get rid of the rest, genuinely. We need two new full backs, two new centre mids, a striker, a centre back and that’s the bare minimum before thinking we could get promoted. We also need a whole new identity at the club imo, we have too many hanger ons, I genuinely have nightmares about Pearcey somehow getting a go at managing Charlton next.
Without sounding arrogant are natural position in the footballing world should be a second tier team, comfortably as well. So why is it we are bringing on people from Yeovil? And giving ex players a chance cause they’ve hung around long enough..
we need to start being more ruthless, maybe have a look at a manager in this league who’s overperforming with more experience, look at league 2 at who’s on the up, maybe even go abroad. Either way we need to be stripped down and reset. Some of these players are good enough though that’s for sure

Albie has a ratio of 1 in about 35 games.
Without 4 forwards, it's scary that we need to go back and look at Purrington as our best goal threat, but also a big threat to our own defence.
I like how my post also ended up as a sort of 11-1 scoreline

The cross along the 6 yard line where no one was near enough to tap it in.
Or Gilbey's (?) shot in the first half that landed in the top tier of the JS Stand.
Because that was about all we created.....unless you meant Burstows open goal that led to us conceding.
