I guess the people claiming that Ben Garner won’t be in charge of signings can put that one to bed now
He's not in charge, likewise, he isn't not in charge. He is part of a recruitment team and has the right to veto or recommend targets as Steve Gallen has confirmed.

It really doesn't have to be one or the other where Ben Garner and signings is concerned.
He has the final say on signings, as Gallen stated in is interview saying it would be ridiculous if he didn’t.

This is now evident in him signing a centre back he admired from when he played against and a player from the team he just left, I’d say it’s unlikely we sign either of these if Garner isn’t here.

In a nutshell, people can stop pretending Sandgaard is an evil ruler who won’t let managers sign players now and just get behind the team
Whilst i agree it's unlikely we sign them if Garner wasn't here and they're quite likely names Garner added into the mix, he doesn't have the final say.

"The club’s recruiting is done by Garner, Sandgaard, Director of Recruiting, Steve Gallen, and Director of Analytics, Martin Sandgaard, with a range of scouts and analysts supporting them. Sandgaard was asked if Garner has final say on a player coming into the club. He explained: “We all agree on the names and then Steve Gallen picks up the phone and calls the agent. Steve doesn’t even call the agent unless we all agree."

Admittedly i find it bizarre that if the manager is adamant we sign a player, the others could still veto it, but that's where we are. It's probably unlikely though "so there's this guy at Swindon, he was great for me, we must go and sign him". I can't see Sandgaard saying no.

It's not as if Garner is operating in a separate football environment from Gallen. By the sound of things, O'Connell is someone we had been chasing for weeks, after all if you as a club decide you want to pass from the back more, there aren't a vast number of CB options, especially ones available on a free and not at a level where Championship clubs will pip us.
They said the same last summer as well, pathways, identity etc.  Hopefully lessons have been learnt as the early signs are promising.

Fair enough on the quote geezer but if you watch Steve Gallens interview he genuinely says something along the lines of ‘Garner has the final say after we all chip in, it would be ridiculous if he didn’t’

As much as I think he is hit and miss as a football scout, he strikes me as an honest bloke. I believe TS comments are miscommunication than anything, similar to before
  • Two local lads in. Yeah, yeah, O’Connell is Irish but Irish lads always do well for us. They’re practically made for Charlton.
I get what you mean not necessarily local lads but they do strangle have the feel of Charlton type players
  • I’m sure you’ll all be delighted to know I’m happy with that signing. these are certainly ‘Garner signings’ maybe the extent of the black box was exaggerated.

    More likely it's been re-evaluated.

Every year I get stupidly excited when the signings happen.
I’m even worse this year. I’m loving the sound of these first two.
I even had a punt (e/w) on the title at 20/1 just now :-)

No self control. Ludicrous over optimism. But hey ho.
Another signing at six this evening please. Got the Temazepam ready.
I know what you mean, in reality we've signed two players from league 2 clubs who failed to get promoted but in our heads we've signed Ronaldo and Messi :) Also I love how Charlton fans can turn from absolute negativity 2 weeks ago to suddenly we are going to win the league following a couple of new arrivals :) COYR

More likely was never really a big thing?
  • Early yesterday, it was reported that a player agent was playing hardball, OWTTE. Does anyone know if that related to either of the signings since announced, or is that hush hush (eye-to-eye)?

Garner does not have the final say however I can see another poster has already explained in greater detail.

5:58 onwards says otherwise. It turns out it may have even be TS who I heard say it would be ridiculous if Garner didn’t have say, but I’m about to head out and don’t have the time to find it

agreed Oz but I’m giving TS his day in the sun when I’ve read all this tosh about him. Exciting season ahead

  • Is it just me in thinking Sam Lavelle isn’t looking particularly svelt ?
Doubt he's anywhere match fit yet after his injury.

We must be close to the point where the Marquis and Bostock rumours can be written off…
    Not sure we can yet.

Neither of the first two signings are in those positions. We would also probably need to offload players before bringing players like this in.

Bostock would know Garner from Palace so if he did sign it would be with Ben's blessing.

I always thought these two and Jack Payne might be triallists rather than signings
  • I bet Ipswich fans are furious with us buying the league already
Particularly as we haven't spent anything yet!
  • The Sandinistas are out in force and sifting through some old perceived slights to throw into a thread, that had just got interesting with the 2 new signings. How the 20 ton irony bucket isn’t hitting them between the eyes when they moan about moaning about a done to death recruitment topic is beyond me.

Only hoping there’s some more quality signings coming in soon and as long as they are taking the team forward that’s a good start.

Not expecting anymore this week at this point. Close on a few but unlikely to be announced prior to the squad leaving for Spain.
    Boooooooooo

That Marquis deal is really rumbling on….
  • Can I just check…. 150+ pages or rumours, and not a single serious mention of O’Connell or Egbo?
    Feel very let down  :-(

Ditto. Saw nothing on Twitter either.
never even heard of the player before 😂
  • Disappointed if that's it for the week. Need to get a few more on the Spain trip to integrate and bond. Not a major issue but would be nice.

Jack Payne is an interesting one. Thought he was destined for big things after his break out year for Huddersfield in the season they got promoted from the Championship.

Then got loaned out to Oxford, Blackburn and Bradford who were all League One at the time.

Unsure why he landed in League Two. Had previously proved he could do it in the third tier. A bright spark that fizzled out? Attitude problems? I’m not sure.
Wouldn’t say no to him, but in Fraser I think we have a similar player who is a level above. Could they play in the same midfield? Swindon had Williams LCM and Payne RCM so maybe it could work in league 1 with Fraser and Payne ahead of Dobson.
George Dobson will be one of the first names in the starting 11 unless he gets injured.!

    Don’t, don’t, dont,

Sorry that wasn’t very clear, I meant ahead of him as in on the pitch playing further forward with Dobson as our holding midfielder

I have been saying that the manager has to have the casting vote since Nigel didn't appear to. Have no problem with the Owner being hands on at our level as we have been a basket case for quite a while and he doesn't want even more of his cash squandered.
Between Ben Garner and Steve Gallen they are abreast of just about every player from Championship to League 2. The data box can highlight stats but the network of phone calls and tweets remain the best way to communicate plus on their travels watching games and chatting to managers, Scouts and coaches.

I knew as soon as we got one signing, the optimism would rise and the feel good bus would be on its way. We need strong characters, Athletes with pace or skill. Both Mandela and Eoghan still need to show that their early promise which brought them to the attention of England youth and Celtic respectively can still be realized.

    Let it be with Charlton.
