When you live as a minority, it’s different. If you’re called an English xxxx in England, it doesn’t really impact. When you’re the only one, or one of a few, it cuts a bit deeper. For me, prejudice based on nationality is as bad as any other form. Anything we don’t choose, shouldn’t be used as a stick to beat us with.
You see that's where, in my view, this type of argument falls down.

You cant say theres one rule for one and another rule for another. It's not equitable. It's either wrong to mention someones nationality or it's not.

Saying it's alright to be called an "English xxxx" in England, presumably by someone who's not English, is absolute bullshit. You either shouldn't bring nationality into it or else surely every nationality is fair game?
I agree. It’s complete double standards and his argument is dismissed immediately. There are numerous areas in England where English people will be in the minority. By his theory, being called an English xxxx in these areas is ok and doesn’t have any impact. Absolute nonsense.
Aren't you actually backing up what Cloudworm is saying IE it cuts deeper when you in the minority.  He's not saying, as I read it, that that makes it OK as he goes on the say.

    "

I'm not sure what we do choose should be a stick either but that's another debate.

Not imo mate. He says that if your English and called a xxxx it doesn’t impact. Then goes on to say that prejudice based on nationality is as bad as any other form. The two statements contradict each other. I assume that he has badly worded the first statement as I think the second statement outweighs the first.
  • Why is this discussion being derailed in this way?
Obvious from the nature of the thread that it would be.
  • Marko Marosi is a Slovak; why do I believe that some/one of the moronic fans who follow Cafc believe that is in Russia ?
Some of the shit that comes from the mouths of our critics/fans is amazing and that's aimed at Charlton players let alone the away team.

I don't believe anyone who goes to work should be abused; including Footballers. Boo if you must but for a keeper to inform a ref of being sworn at by a fan who I would imagined kept doing it and mentioned his country as well ( or what the moron thought was his Country) then pleased that it was dealt with. "Only a bit of banter" said potty mouth fan when up before the break.

Can anyone who was in earshot confirm what was said ?
Put the words in speech marks !

    We won't shoot the messenger.
I know a female supporter who sits here by and says it’s a father and son who basically are vile individuals and basically been getting away with comments all season .. …

Time for her to talk to the club
    Sounds like the same fella...
  • This is exhausting.
  • We Do NOT want Racism or nasty Behaviour towards anyone at our lovely club.
whoever this Scumbag was he was also proper brain dead pondlife if he thinks the Shrewsbury Goalkeeper was Russian as he is Not.
and even if he was, racist behaviour of totally out of order and the Scumbag in question should be Banned for life.
horrible and disrespectful Crap Hound !!!!
  • This is an issue receiving attention because everyone at the game saw something.
The nature of what we saw is being discussed and the wider implications.
    It can hardly be ignored.

  • The guys Slovakian for a start….
In which case (as I see it), the person who shouted the comment with a Russian **** insult, cannot possibly be accused of making a racist comment as Marosi is Slavik, NOT Russian.
However, if he had call him a Slovenian **** that would, I assume, have been a racial slur.
Am I right…..all he’s done is used foul language as far as I can see? 🧐
Would calling a Bangladeshi a smelly Indian be ok?
    It’s a can of worms I reckon. 🤔
I think it’s simply bang out of order.

So does anyone (without going into explicit detail) have any insight into what non-racist discrimination consists of to be worthy of arrest?
Based on nationality, rather than race?
Is that an arrestible offence? Genuine question.

Yes, falls within the legal definition of racial discrimination.
  • Two comments in the broader picture of events:
1- If the game was being suspended for whatever reason, as has been stated, should there not have been a PA announcement to advise the crowd?
2- Having been in the media room after the match, can confirm that Jacko said little on the matter other than to tell us in broad terms what the ref had told him, this in response to a 'what was it about?' question from two journos, and there was no comment from Cotterell as he didn't come into the media room, we were given a 'hearsay' version of his comment to pitchside press.

I was given a full transcription of what he said to the local Shrewsbury reporter

Did not see this thread, posted this on Post match thread... Would happily identify him

Sat N lower behind the goal, second row for the Morecambe game. There was a guy to my left, one or two rows back. He kept going out to the steps, abusing the keeper. My gf brought his anti social behaviour to my attention. H e also had a son with him about 11 or 12 yo. He actually thought he was really funny, turning around looking at our fans with a big grin on his face.
Wished I had reported him, or better still given him a slap...
You wished you had responded with violence?
    Spooky.

     Descrimination still.
Yeah just checked the CPS website and calling someone for their nationality is in there in the football chant section
so if somebody called me English that would be classed as discrimination? or does it have to have a derogative term afterwards? adding the word tosser after the word English for example?
Has to be threatening or abusive based on race, colour, nationality or national origin. So yeah I'd guess you'd need a derogative term in there to make it an offence
I bet that happens alot in other leagues especially in the UK.
Yeah, I've heard plenty of "welsh/scottish/Irish xxxx" over the years, which under that law would see you arrested. I wonder how many are aware that's actually an offence?
    Indeed.
to be fair, I'm pretty sure we've all heard similar 'racism' against the English from Welsh and Scots so lets not label this an English thing. My best friend moved away from Wales because of racism (not called that then) she suffered constantly in her early twenties. This sort of thing twenty years ago wouldn't be considered racism and I think that's why many don't realise its now an offence. Most ppl think of racism as white against black or black against white. People need to get used to the modern world we live in whether you agree with it or not.

  • Seems to be a group of fans on Twitter who want a public apology from the club.
  • Two free season tickets for next season would be a goodwill dance of contrition, not merely a gesture.
  • Rothko said:
what apology is he looking for? Being wrongly IDed by the keeper? someone not being the club on twitter claiming it was him?
Here’s his view of what happened
