For 75 minutes we were the better team. CBT and Stockley coming off, CBT was knackered I know, but it helped them as the defence felt more comfortable and allowed them to push forwards. I thought both teams were a bit cagey before that although being the away side it was more understandable for us. Leaburn probably should have come on to play with Stockley but he hasn't the experience to lead the line and that isn't a crticism.
I think we need to teach CBT some composure if that is possible but if he had it he wouldn't be with us. He scares the life out of opponents though. The wide man needs to make a horizontal line with the forward when the ball is coming from the opposite side. Ours were taking up midfielder's positions so decent balls only had one target.
It was a decent performance though. A hot day and their subs improved them and ours had the opposite effect. Hard to be too critical but we do need a striker and hope the Palace lad knows where the goal is.
Not going to get too disheartened. We had them on the back foot for long periods of the game, ultimately though, it’s goals that win games…. I’m enjoying the football we are playing much more than the dross that has been served up for the last 2 years.
Garner left the subs too late, we were blowing with 20 mins left. Really disappointed with Stockley, my neighbours tortoise moves quicker. We had a couple of breakaways and he was 20 yards off the pace.
All that said, we look a much better proposition than we have done for a long time.
Lot to be positive about though every time Inniss gets given the ball I do hold my breath. Fingers crossed for the striker needed to give us a genuine chance.
McGrandles played like he was still concussed. I’ve got to say, I’d have much preferred Alex Gilbey’s energy coming on in a game like this.
I literally can't believe I'm writing this, but somehow Gilbey would have been less bad, yes.
Hopefully it is just a matter of fitness. When JRS and Egbo are up to speed, Payne will be able to play in midfield anyway too so we can forget this heresy
Very disappointing to come away with nothing but we paid the price for a lack of goal threat in the final third and missed opportunities in the first half and at the beginning of the second. Once Wednesday belatedly got on top in the last 20 minutes, they looked very dangerous and we ran out of legs.
Sessegnon, Dobbo, Morgan and Blackett-Taylor did well for most of the game, whilst Stockley looked slow and laboured and Kirk far too casual and almost disinterested.
A very decent performance but we all know that lack of goals are our Achilles heel at present. Hopefully the young lad from Palace will add some but we really do need another striker.
It seems the better we play, the worse the result. Bloody football.
Got to win our home games to be in with any chance of top 6 finish, 2 very important games coming up, which just might define our season.
Like the look of Payne, like to see him start, still not convinced about Fraser or Mc in midfield.
We shouldn’t forget that both Wednesday and Derby will probably be right up there at end of season. What I would say is that IF we could get hold of a proven goal scorer it will probably be the difference between promotion candidates or being also rans
I suggest we give McGrandles a chance. He missed part of pre season with an injury and is just starting to build up his minutes. He's a proven strong player at this level and it's just stupid to write him off so quickly.
Garner needs to shoulder some of the blame there. Midfield needed freshening up 10mins before he did. Best 75mins I have seen this season, tired and didn't replace Fraser early enough and paid for it.
Need to see it again, but it looked like Innis lost his man (again) for the goal.
Lots of positives - Sessengon is quality, Clare looking better and better at right back, O'Connell huge improvement, Morgan busy, Dobson covered loads of ground, CBT a real threat until he ran out of gas on 65mins. Leaburn again didn't look out of place. Payne loomed lively, but would rather see him playing in the Fraser role.
Only concern is the lack of clear chances created given the dominance we had for 2/3s of the game.
Shame JRS wasn't on the bench. Think a 10/15 mins cameo against a weary full back would have been interesting.
Stockley is struggling with this formation you have to question if he is mobile enough to play that role. Hopefully we are looking to address this.
Am slightly alarmed at how poor McGrandles has been so far too. Knew nothing about him prior to his arrival, he came with a big reputation, but has looked lost so far.
Definitely enough there for a play off challenge if we can sort out the striking role.
I was saying that during the game. The game was crying out for a Gilbey. We knew it would be hot and we needed energy. For me, even if you don't like him, it was more a game for him than a not fully fit McGrandles.
Garner saying Stockley was under the weather today but tried to play through it.
Mmm,shouldnt have played then. That heat wouldnt have helped one bit
Ok, well he had to bring him off then. He was keeping the defenders honest and it exposes our lack of options up front. Don't know what some of you were watching but their defence was more comfortable against Leaburn. It was one of the reasons they were able to get more players forwards.
A frustrating result. I felt that on the balance we deserved something.
Going forward our first XI needs to be:
JW Clare (Egbo, once he’s fit) Lavelle (Innis is a liability on the ball, and doesn’t do enough in the opposition box on set pieces for a guy of his size) O’Connell Sessegnon
Dobson Morgan (or hopefully a PL loan) Payne
CBT A new striker JRS
Stockley doesn’t fit this system. It’s not fair to expect an 18 year old to lead the line, and Chuks is made of glass.
McGrandles might be the only midfielder worse than Gilbey. Fraser’s legs had completely gone, and he was still a better option than McGrandles.
DJ never has been good enough, and I don’t think he will improve beyond his current level. He needs to go.
Kirk and CBT need to attack the six yard box when the other has the ball. Clare needs to stop the silly fouls (3 in dangerous places today). Stockley doesn't fit the system. Kirk is a luxury but not good enough for that luxury. CBT needs composure. Dobson is just superb. Albie great until he tired. O'Connel and Sessignon had super games. Waalacott is decent and Clare was really good except for the fouls. Fraser looks slow.
We at with a plan and a purpose. It didn't come off today but they were scared of CBT pace and my hope is the Palace boy does the same on the other wing but with more composure and we bring a striker in.
Enjoyed the game, we were a tad unlucky, Garner should have made more subs earlier but ultimately they are 3-4 players ahead of us as a squad in my opinion.
It has been obvious since the start of the season that we are lacking a striker who is quick and can run at players. It’s what the system we are playing needs. I really hope we have someone lined up. Not sure what the future holds for Stockleywith us playing this way. Still get that forward in and we have a real chance of top 6. Need a win Tuesday now big time.
I suggest we give McGrandles a chance. He missed part of pre season with an injury and is just starting to build up his minutes. He's a proven strong player at this level and it's just stupid to write him off so quickly.
Is anyone writing him off or just saying he hasn't played well so far? Sure we'll see better from him.
Garner saying Stockley was under the weather today but tried to play through it.
If that's true it's just fucking stupidity. It was like playing with 10 men at times
But we have nobody else to play up front. We have 2 weeks now to sort this out. Sheff Wed were able to bring on Lee Gregory, a proven goalscorer. We could only bring in Miles Leaburn. Says it all.
Really enjoying the way we are playing right now, some of the best actual football we've played for years....until we get into the final third.
Stockley doesn't look close to scoring with this system and the midfielders have been a bit wayward.
But, four games into the season (including the league cup), we're still a work in progress and I'd like to think we'll get better in attack.
Today we outplayed the promotion favourites for over an hour but it wasn't to be. These things happen. But it looks to me that we have a good manager and coaching team in place and that augurs well.

Not questioning the reason for him playing, just that should he have been playing in that heat if he was unwell? Player welfare and all that🤷♂️

I don’t want to keep beating the drum on this. But it’s continuously situations we have found ourselves in, in recent years, because we have quality players who should be able to come in a replace someone when this is the case - but they are either always injured themselves or unable to play the required minutes form the start if not.

Madness playing an ill player in that heat. Highlights lack of depth. Aneke an availability liability and Miles Leaburn can't have all that expectation put on him so soon.
Needed to replace Washington or should have kept him. Ridiculous decision and we're lacking. If Stockley gets injured we're very limited.
If we are playing Stockley when he is ill then surely that should tell the powers that be everything they need to know about where we need strengthening.

Three or four substitutes just after half-time will become normal.
Save your best players for the second half! The idea that you start with your "best team" no longer works .
