  • Held out for a while but lost two quick wickets to Cook. Lead of 29 and Singh heads out. Surrey chasing Middlesex down quickly.

    Come on rain!!!
  • Need the rain to hit Chelmsford now and stick over Essex until Surrey have won...
  • Forecast doesn't have it hitting til 14:00 :'(
  • All out. Essex need 29 to win  :|
  • We honestly deserve to go down but fear we will get lucky with both Middlesex and Northampton somehow being worse. Said it the other day but we have no place in division 1 with the current squad we have
  • Feels wrong to be cheering on Surrey today  :D

I find it quite normal  🤣
  • 8 wicket win for Surrey
    Always here to help
  • All 3 strugglers end up with minimal points
  • Predictable heavy defeat but at least Middlesex and Northamptonshire lost too to give us a smidgeon of hope for survival.

  • Middlesex and Northants do have a game in hand over us, but so far this season have 2 and 1 batting bonus points respectively!
  • Do us, Notts and Middlx still have to play each other ?
  • Middlesex at home and that's it

We have to play Notts twice in our final four fixtures - away next week and at home at the start of September so it is still very much in our hands. Notts are also home to Middx.

Middx still have five games to play but they aren't easy ones especially as four are away - home and away to Warwickshire and away to Essex, Lancashire and Notts

Toby Albert is coming on loan from Hants this week I believe though I can't find any official confirmation of that and assume that this will be for both the CC and the 50 over comp as an extra body would make sense. Albert scored 231 against Kent 2s earlier in the season.

Kent are still hoping to persuade Cox to sign a new contract though the rumour is that he is signing for Essex or Hants. Perhaps it's going to be a straight swap - Albert for Cox - at the end of the season.

  • Can see him ending up at Hampshire as you previously stated, would’ve signed a contract by now if he wanted to stay. Just can’t help but to think the whole situation has been poorly managed, gone from potentially having Robinson and cox to absolutely nothing. It’s not like we have an up and coming keeper either have we?

Wonder if it’s a money issue with Cox ?

That might be part of it, another would have been his desire to take the gloves in the CC (which is now doing) but he might also be waiting to see if we are relegated or not. If he has England aspirations (and he is some way off that but who knows where he will be in two or three years time) then the last thing he wants to be doing is to commit to a three year contract in Div 2. Robinson made a calculated gamble that Durham would be promoted this season and given that they are 54 points clear that is exactly what is going to happen.

Albert/cox, theres a smutty joke to be had with this.

You have to be offered a contract in order to sign it, and as far as I know Cox has not had a new contract offer from Kent. He has had offers from three other counties though.

He will make a decision in the next few weeks I understand.

  • Is Cox that good? Kent seem to produce a number of players who will produce the occasional headline grabbing performance, but then follow it with mediocrity.
  • would he replace the Essex keeper though ?

    No idea re Hampshires keeper

I think we have to remember that he is still only 22. He has potentially another 15 years to fulfill the promise. Robinson was written off by some and look at what he is producing now and he is only 24. With Crawley unlikely to play many game and losing the up and coming ones and what are we left with in the first team that we have produced under 30? It becomes a trend to move on sooner rather than later which is not so bad if you have a conveyor belt of talent. But we don't. Jas Singh captained the 2s this week, the only contracted player in the game, is only 21 and he's only played a handful of first team games.

Essex have Buttleman, Rossington and Pepper. Rossington is more of a white ball player who chases franchise cricket, Pepper has a lifetime batting average of 17.61 in the CC and Buttleman's average is 20.14. Neither of the latter two have a First Class ton to their name.

Hampshire have Ben Brown who will be 35 this year
  • Will be interesting to see what the squad is for tomorrow, you would expect both denly and cox to miss out due to injury and maybe billings to come back in?

There appears to be a bit of a delay in announcing the squad -a preview has just gone up with "squad to follow". Still no official announcement about Toby Albert so possibly that's not happening. As for Billings, it was stated that he was going to have time off prior to the Hundred and possibly return come September. Both DBD and Gilchrist were, by accounts, possibilities to return but certainly in the case of the latter I would have thought that he needed some over under his belt before doing so.
  • If Billings and Cox are out get Knotty or Steve Marsh back to keep wicket. At least either of those will show some guts with the bat.

To be fair Finch did OK in both disciplines in the last game

    True enough.

As an indication of how our batsmen have been performing, in terms of consistency this season, here some  are the number of innings, their average followed by, in brackets, their average taking out their their biggest score of the season. It rather demonstrates how one innings can skew a player's overall contribution to the team:

    10 - DBD 54.55 (21.11)

    4 - Finch 45.25 (22.33)

    11 - Muyeye 39.09 (25.10)

    11 - Crawley 36.63 (23.30)

    18 - Compton 34.52 (27.82)

    16 - Evison 34.21 (29.23)

    18 - Leaning 24.81 (21.93)

    17 - Cox 24.06 (16.80)

    9 - Qadri 21.12 (13.86)

    10 - Stewart 20.60 (17.33)

    3 - McKerr 20.50 (18.00)

    8 - Hogan 18.75 (16.67)

    8 - Agar 16.00 (10.17)

    7 - Arshdeep Singh 13.00 (9.00)

    12 - Quinn 11.30 (8.44)

    10 - Billings 9.20 (6.78)
