Peter Varney asking for big crowd for Brighton match (Potential Buyers?)

Okay I can take your word for that, but Collins has taken it to a personal attack in public.cafcfan said:
Peter was okay but the Messiah he was not. I had a few issues with him back in the day. There were a number of things he could have handled much, much better than he did.Six-a-bag-of-nuts said:I wonder what is behind Collins's disdain.
Don't come across many Charlton fans with a bad word to say about Peter Varney.
Just naturally curious to know what drove him to that extreme.2 -
Do you really have to ask?Ducktapeshoerepairs said:This is a good home cup game and Varney’s plea aside, is it really that difficult for people to pay £15 to go to a home cup game? This is a site for football fans right, isn’t that what football fans do ? Why so difficult to attend a reasonably priced home cup game ffs0 -
Lots of reasons why a wide spectrum of people may find it difficult to attend.Ducktapeshoerepairs said:This is a good home cup game and Varney’s plea aside, is it really that difficult for people to pay £15 to go to a home cup game? If this was either Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool etc, a lot (not all) of those reasons would not suddenly apply. Remember ‘thick and thin’, ‘good times / bad times’ etc, our support is very very fickle and dare I say it, a lot more fickle than many other clubsTodds_right_hook said:

Collins is clearly of the opinion that a lot of things happened during the time Varney was on the board. Some good. Some bad.
Varney likes to take credit for the good stuff but not so much the bad stuff according to Collins.5 -
Varney out.
He doesn't even play the guitar.11 -

I think what Mick Collins fails to grasp is that Peter Varney, by and large, will have done things which he truly believes to have been in the best interests of Charlton. Did he alway get things right? Cleanly the answer is no but I really doubt Varney has ever had a self-serving agenda.35

Varney has good intentions, but nothing more.

Sure, like anyone at any company in any job. However, the question is: was his time a net positive for Charlton Athletic football club? And I reckon it definitely was. In both periods. There was obvious mistakes in the dowie/reed/pards era, and I will forever question why he thought bringing jiminez and Kevin Cash on was a good idea, but ultimately we spent significant time in the prem on his first stint and almost got to the playoffs to the prem on his second. Wouldn’t we trade what we have now for one of those scenarios?carly burn said:

Energy crisis, cost of living crisis, week before Christmas. I don't think it would make much different in this climate, I include the current on and off field goings on in that.Ducktapeshoerepairs said:

plus, if we got one of the teams you mentioned, it would be on tv 😂. Watch it home in the warm and turn it off when their 4th goes in.
I wasn't planning on going, then I had second thoughts but now I can't go because of other Christmas related plans. If we had arsenal or Liverpool, I still wouldn't change those plans. Maybe if it was in nov or jan, but not a week before Christmas.I do agree with you to a certain extent, but it's not as black and white as to why people aren't going. A big reason is because the club is a mess and I can see why people are not as fully committed as in times gone by.1 -
Couldn't agree more. Shouldn't need Varney's plea to get a good crowd for this. Last 16 cup game under the lights against a team doing well in the premier league for £15. Likely to be our biggest game of the season given we are not going to go up/down.Ducktapeshoerepairs said:This is a good home cup game and Varney’s plea aside, is it really that difficult for people to pay £15 to go to a home cup game? Some people I know are worried about putting their heating on. I'm a governor at a school and there are parents who are asking the school for help because they can't afford Christmas presents this year. It's a toss up for some people whether they heat the house or buy stuff for Christmas. On that basis, yes, there are people who wouldn't go because it's arsenal.Ducktapeshoerepairs said:

"sorry love, you will need to put a jumper on tonight, I've spunked the gas money on a ticket in the north upper".
me personally, I wouldn't be fussed about a premiership team in a cup. How many of arsenals star players would play? I would want to see their World Cup stars, not squad players and youngsters.2 -
