DBD surely needs to bring himself on as the 4th seamer
One would have thought so though he didn't bowl for a decade because of historical back problems. Perhaps he has a concern there.
Captains sometimes are a bit reluctant to bring themselves on, in case it looks like they're "pulling rank". We need a senior pro like Leaning or Joe to give him a nudge, if he's fit.
nice day, tempted to sneak out of work and watch the last bit. I think Elgar is a fine replacement for Cook. Thinking Kushi needs a bat of twice the width. Shall see what happens when Essex bowl, but it's usually Hamer-friendly
Paul Walter, who has been playing one one leg for the last half an hour or so, eventually gives it up - caught by Joe Denly off the bowling of Parkinson for 33 (51)
One other interesting aspect of this game is that, in the absence of the injured Rossington, Pepper has been brought in to keep. Cox was extremely frustrated that he was at one time third choice but, eventually, due to Robinson leaving and Billings allowing him to take the gloves, he got the gloves. He's now, seemingly, third choice again, albeit second in line in the Blast because there's no way that Rossington won't play in that comp and Cox is by far the better fielder.
Just the seven centurions today in the CC and Surrey, Yorkshire and Derbyshire are the only teams to bowl the opposition out. They'll be a strike from batsmen if the decision is taken to revert to the Dukes ball for the whole of the season.
A bit weird to name a 13, then pick someone not in the 13. You might as well not bother announcing the 13, and just name the team on the day!
An interesting choice to go for Jaydn rather than say Grant Stewart, as I can't see him bowling much.
I wonder if Stewart even travelled and they took Klaassen and Jaydn (who was probably always going to be the sub fielder) as cover because I can't imagine that they wanted on this pitch to go in with just three seamers. Stewart is just coming back from injury and they wouldn't necessarily have wanted him running around as 12th man whereas Jaydn fits that bill. Stewart at 7 certainly wouldn't be ideal but he's no mug with the bat and the potential workload for Agar, Gilchrist (overs still being managed) and Garrett (a relative rookie) has to be a concern. That said, we couldn't have started any better and hope Jaydn does well on what is his First Class debut.
Well Stewart is certainly there now because he's come on to field for DBD. So it does appear that we were more concerned about having a batsman at 7, albeit an inexperienced one, than playing a fourth seamer. And given that DBD hasn't bowled a single ball this season, that does suggest that he doesn't consider himself fit enough to fulfil that role.
Warwickshire finish the day on 490-1. That is starting to make me wonder whether this could end up one of the worst, numerically, ever decisions to put the opposition in.
Picking Jaydn does look like quite a negative pick, adding an extra batsman, hoping to bat out a draw I imagine. I guess if we draw this game, it'll be considered the right call.

Think I read somewhere that Cox was working on his bowling so it would give him another string to his bow in white ball teams.

That would be the opposite to what Finch has done and would be a real achievement if he does become a bowler in the pro game. He's bowled one over as a pro and in the last 9 years in Club cricket he's delivered 4 overs with the last one being in 2019 against Sevenoaks Vine - it went for 14.

The rumour is that Scott Borthwick has asked for protection when he leaves the field - and that's just from his own team!
