And I was going to do Peterborough but just couldn’t 😂£60 down drain
Betting on Charlton never a good idea- thought everyone knew that by now! BUT if you'd have done a 25 pence trixie there (4 bets total outlay still £1), you'd have got a return of £3 for the double that occurred. If Charlton had got the result too then £27 return- admittedly less that what was offered in the accumulator at 60/1 but less painful for the inevitable Charlton cock up.
I need to go to Specsavers. I hear we played 3-4-3 but, from where I was sitting, in the first half when we reset all I could see was 4-3-2-1. There were definitely 4 across the back line and Alfie May was yards ahead of the other 2 supporting him. Not that formations particularly interest me. It's just that I would like to know I'm not losing it in my advancing years.
I think the idea was that it was supposed to be 3-4-3 when we were in possession, switching to a 4-3-3 when they had the ball.
Didn’t think we’d win this game, thought we would be torn open tbh! Understood what Appleton tried to do first half, created an overload vs their 3 in midfield, kept Randall fairly quiet where he had to drift wide to get space but the two Campbells were abysmal and completely undone it. Nothing stuck high, they never supported May, they never went beyond, they didn’t hit the box when it went wide. I saw Chem run behind Kyprianou when Tayo had possession taking himself out the game! Hiding in plain sight!!! Tyreece had nothing against Collins, after 20 mins he just started to stand off him.
I’m not getting into MA with the 1st half concept, but it was the wrong selection of players to carry that out and when very evident it wasn’t working, he should have made a tactical shift like he did second half. It was a good change in both system and subs.
I wonder how long before half time, MA thought that second half system change needed to happen? The mute hands in the pocket act on the sideline really doesn’t work!
Posted the first half summary in the match thread already, first 15 we looked fairly comfy and handled the posh's probing well, but gradually they turned it up, got the opener and then we sat back for most of the half, dire display of pointless punts up to May who, ridiculously, was having to do 2 jobs - lead the line and link up with himself in midfield.
C.Campbell, would immediately go wide and just didnt attempt to take a man on, backwards or balls into the midfield. TCampbell was just so bad it hurt my eyes.
Bakinson looked pretty good.
Second half and we became a football team, Kanu made an instant impact in being able to offer something up. Louie Watson continued to impress even if everything didnt come off, but he and Kanu is what brought about our equaliser.
Positive signs from the second half performance although we're still dumb defensively, no cover for T Watson who was caught up field after almost grabbing an assist - cant knock him for that at all.
Coventry looked pretty tidy and might be the first player in a while to come in with some excitement and live up to it.
Just hope Appleton can work out who he wants to play and how quick as the R spots are looming.
A midfield 3 of Bakinson, Coventry and Dobson is a must with Louis Watson to fill in when needed.
We cannot continue to play games giving teams a 2 goal head start tho, cos that’s basically what we are doing at the moment.
I think dobsons place is seriously under threat. He has been our best player for 2.5 years now but he sits so deep. It was refreshing to see Coventry and Bakinson wanting to play forward balls in the opposition half.
Perspective. He asks for perspective. So I’ll give it.
This is a ‘manager’ who, out of his 7 permanent jobs, has totally failed at Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn, Blackpool again and now (in my view) Charlton. Oxford he did a good job, fair play. Lincoln he inherited a team that was built by another manager.
Add to the fact that he is a charmless prick who gives the impression Charlton is an inconvenience to him, below his level, a stepping stone.
Fuck him. The season is a write off. Fuck him off. Plenty a Charlton manager has done less to warrant a sacking. He only exists at Charlton to save what little face certain executives have left.
That was harsh deserved something from that , but have to say their 3 front men were the best we faced this season .. we started with 4321 and for 29 mins it was stalemate but then T Campbell just losses concentration and the bloke away , it was a good strike and goal but that one moment . .. the last 15 was difficult but second half we were excellent took a gamble went 4132 and lots of positives especially the new players … Coventry is years ahead better player then Dobson .. But we got caught in the break with their pace that always a risk but we had chances Kanu really should do better and May , but the effort and fight second half saw the team clapped off .. … but again that forward who can hold the ball was what was missing and again diff between points and no points . ..
I know I'm feeding a troll here but we did not start 4 at the back!!
Ah well, put it in a pile with the rest of the failure.
The only good from today apart from the new players looking ok is that Appleton tried a different shape. I don't love 3 at the back but we know May needs a player alongside him to be at his best so let's just do it. CBT is clearly going, sell him and just don't replace him so Appleton doesn't have a choice. We've got Gillesphey for the left side of it, we now need to get a striker in and there will come a point where we have May, another striker, Kanu and Aneke as options. We have Dobson, Fiorini, Coventry, Fraser, Bakinson and eventually Camara and McGrandles to fill those 3 midfield spaces and we pray Edun doesn't get injured. We're stuck with Appleton, pray something works
Glad someone is still playing! Definitely needed. I have more faith in Appleton than the board
Amazing what 24 hours can do. All the positivity of the last few days, evaporated in the 97 mins played today. I didn't attend but listened to the stream, the changes were warranted but there was one repeated event throughout the second half commentary, that was the lack of the ball staying with our forwards when they were found with passes. I lost count of how many times the ball was played into the forwards, only to see it return almost immediately, that position up front is the one that's lacking and probably the hardest one to fill in this window.
An abysmal first half in which we stood off Peterborough and admired - from a very respectful distance - their handiwork and passing game. Chen and Tyreece Campbell were particularly ineffective but the whole team was flat and passive, leaving Alfie May totally isolated up front. Not once did Edun or Campbell get to the byline.
We were much better in the second half with Kanu up top and, buoyed by Alfie’s goal, gave it a real go. In the final analysis, Peterborough’s superior quality was always likely to tell and so it came to pass, with their guy running through the practically vacant right side of our defence to slot home.
There were some pluses, including a better and spirited second half, a good debut from Bakinson (who seems to be a much-needed talker, as well as a physical presence), an impressive cameo from Coventry and decent turns from Ness and Kanu.
In the final analysis, though, Peterborough were worthy winners and our lack of penetration down the flanks was a portent of how we’re going to fare if, as appears likely, CBT moves to pastures new this month. This team also remains almost totally incapable of putting together a 90 plus minute performance.
Given that we’re only 2 points above next week’s opponents, Burton - who sit in 19th position - we should not delude ourselves into thinking that we’re not capable of being drawn into a relegation battle. I think we’ll ultimately be ok but our direction of travel is hardly encouraging and we have some very tough fixtures coming up (although every game is tough at the moment). It is very depressing to be even looking over our shoulder towards the bottom of the table but that’s where we are at present.
I hope I’m wrong, but I do wonder if a continued run of poor results will see Appleton out of a job by the beginning of March. The question for the owners, regardless of where we end up this season is pretty simple: is this the man to take us back to the Championship ?

Fuck him. The season is a write off. Fuck him off. Plenty a Charlton manager has done less to warrant a sacking. He only exists at Charlton to save what little face certain executives have left.
Well here he inherited a bag of shite! You can't polish a turd.
You can't use what he inherited elsewhere to explain away his success without also allowing it as an excuse for what's going wrong here.
If these new signings are familiar with his coaching and show promise, which early comments on here suggest they might be, hopefully form and results will improve. If they don't and we lose the next two, I'll be surprised if he isn't shown the door.

I don’t have the energy or time to explain what has gone wrong here, it’s been done to death.
Bollocks to his alleged coaching, it’s taken us nowhere but even lower. If you’re hanging onto the next two games, we already know he is not the man, and never will be.
Still think there’s a bit of a reset needed with players and our manager, looked a million miles off off Peterborough first half, thought they bossed the game, and looked like the team we wanted to be.

ay 3-5-2. We then sacked him!
Amazing how he got away with things. He could have finished us.

No wins since the 28th November. 4 points out of the last 24, and not a tough run of fixtures either.
