POST-MATCH THREAD: Burton Albion V Charlton Athletic : Tuesday 26th November 2024 : KO 19:45

If constipation was a football match, this was it. Charlton, having not won in five, travelled to bottom-of-the-table Burton, looking to redeem themselves by preying on the even more hapless young side. They pushed and pushed, but little came. Hoping to feast themselves, the visitors instead found it difficult to find openings and the whole affair trudged on and on in hopeless tedium. Charlton did impose themselves but without enough quality to make it count.

The same one half started in much the same way and, whilst there were chances for both sides, it wasn’t until the sixty-eighth minute mark that the monotony was broken. Substitute Terry Taylor found himself chasing back, attempting to stem a Burton counter attack. He pulled back Charlie Webster in a clumsy, forceful manner that Webster was not happy about. The frustrated Webster lost his head and charged Taylor, knocking him to the ground in a clear act of aggression that resulted in his sending off. Now, could Charlton make their numerical advantage count? Barely. But there was a breakthrough on eighty two minutes, when substitute Thierry Small burst into the six yard box and forced the Burton keeper into rushing out and deflecting the ball into Conor Coventry at the edge of the box. His first shot was well parried, but he got onto the rebound with his left and unleashed a rocket through traffic that broke the deadlock and saved the away side’s blushes. It wasn’t a classic affair, only a sign that a side bottom of the league and with a man less is about our level.

Three points is still three points, but it doesn’t change the fact that we’re woefully inadequate.

Burton Albion 0 Charlton 1

  • Not that I trust us to do it with the sort of style of play we seem to manage - but we arguable have a good chunk of ‘winnable’ games coming up - and if we go on a little decent run over December, with how close it is we could still find ourselves in the mix somehow.

Either way, less said about tonight’s game the better.
  • Awful. Hopeless. Inept.

Possibly Gillesphey’s best game, actually looked pretty solid. Anderson can't keep getting starts.

Crazy to think we're only 5 points off play offs. A decent run and we're right in the mix

In a shocking twist of fate, the bloke who's the best at playing the defensive central midfield role also turns out to be the best at playing the attacking central midfield role ;)

That was dreadful though, against a historically bad side. Not convinced at all
  • Very low quality game of football. A win is a relief but doesn't fill you with confidence! Taylor and 2pac Campbell making a good case that they should be in the team, as did Kaheim Dixon scoring four goals for the u21s tonight
  • Felt like a must win and we won. So that’s good. Stops the rot, which is not to be sniffed at given the form we’re in.

It did those two things in the most uninspiring way possible but it at least did them.

It gives me no renewed optimism that we will push on from here but I hope we do.

  • I mean, at least we are not man city.....

Tough watch, in January we need to utilise the loan market and get some creativity/guile in

It's really not looking good. I know we won but that was a wake-up call as to just how poor we are.

A very ugly win, but 3 points is 3 points however they come, but wow it was an awful match.
Coventry was my MOM, not just for the goal, but his all round work rate. Taylor must start in front of Anderson as does TC
Happy with the win, but something has to change in our performances!

  • Yes it was a win but that performance was very worrying. So disjointed and zero quality. The strike force looked so out of touch.

The result masks the fact that we were awful yet again.
Anderson needs to be loaned out in the transfer window. I just don't know what he brings to the team?

They didn't need a win, they had to win and they did. Charlton were the better side for long periods but the final ball was poor, talking of poor, Burton were shockingly bad, mustered two shots by my  count. We are still are so narrow, REG managed to get wide first half and Josh Edwards did the same second half. Our boring style of play has nothing to do with 'Big players missing' it's a choice made by the manager.

I think that's quite an important win. Things could have gotten ugly quickly if we had lost that. Hopefully we can use the next games against a current league 2 side and a side who look destined to be in league 2 to build some momentum.

The 20 minutes I watched before I gave up was shocking. Whatever faith I had in Jones has completely left me.

Glad we kept a clean sheet too, AMB barely tested. I know it's only Burton but you have to start somewhere

Not a pretty game and first half was poor, but we were the better team and deserved to win. We badly needed a result and we got it, I can imagine there will be lots of negatives comments but we really weren’t as bad as some will make up. I’ve not seen anything to suggest this team will make the top 6 but if we can be in contention by January, with a few additions we might have a chance.
  • As predicted sunk the 6 beers. As we won I have promoted myself to gin&tonic. Happy days and a poor watch but great result. COYA

Four of the next six league games are at home. If we can pick up some points, and by some miracle buy some decent non-Luton, non-Ipswich players in the transfer window.... we might make top 10.
