Sri Lanka v England ODI Series

England's build up to the World Cup starts today.

England won the toss and inserted SL.

The general rule of thumb used to be to double the score at 30 overs and you'd have a good idea of what the total would be in a 50-over game. However these days it's generally accepted that if you have wickets in hand you add 100 to the score at 40 overs. Goodness knows what we'll be chasing at this rate with SL on 179-2 off 33. But at least we've got Alistair Cook!

  • I was really looking forward to the start of the international cricket winter this morning. I forgot how bad we are at 1 day cricket!
  • Looks like the bit part bowlers should haver been used more.

Root and Bopara - six overs between them for only 27 runs.
  • Tredwell on a hat trick. His first ball of the next game.
  • Nope - a hat trick can be across overs, across innings but not across matches.

    You sure about that?

  • Cook survives two LBW-OUT decisions from consecutive balls on review .. all in the first over

The selectors really have made a rod for their own back in picking Cook. No place for Hales is simply ridiculous and with Ali showing he can do it in ODIs they would make a potent opening partnership.

Bell went for 35 off 36. Ali currently 72 off 47 balls and Root has just joined him.

    121-2 off 17.2.

edit: Root gone for 2 and now 121-3.
  • Don't worry we've got Eion Morgan.....
  • Like buses......Morgan gone for 1.

    Crazy isn't it!

Alex Hales, 1 of the best T20 players in world cricket, can't get in our 50 over side because of Cook. I guarantee he'd get in any other side in the world

    Absolute madness!
  • Ali completes superb hundred off 72 balls. Third fastest in ODIs by an English player.
  • Ali out for 119 off 87 balls.

    203-6 and needing 115 off 19 overs.
  • Here we go again another defeat for the test team, oh hold on the 1 day team team?????? To many test players playing 1 day cricket doesnt work.lets get specialist one dayers in.cook should be nowhere near the one day team.another failure.time to unleash Hales.
  • A disappointing defeat. If England had chased the total down it would have laid down a nice marker to the other teams...
  • A decent game of cricket in the end really

  • I think Ravi Bopara is a superb limited overs player, possibly our best. His batting can be devastating, his bowling is very effective, but he has always had an issue with seeing a game through at the death and this was highlighted yet again. Maybe he should bat 3? Finishing a run chase is a skill in itself and he just doesn't seem to be able to handle it like Lamb or Fairbrother used to for us and countless others for other countries.
  • An issue seeing it through? Ridiculously harsh. Bopara generally gets in when the cause is hopeless, like today, and has come close to pulling off a miracle a few times. He's constantly let down by those around him. Agree he should bat higher.
  • It's not harsh, it's a fact and not only noticed by me.
  • Cook is not a one day player.........a great Test batsman but not a 50-over man
  • Cook is not a one day player.........a great Test batsman but not a 50-over man

Wow! A wildly controversial view there Golfie, you've really opened a can of worms there....

He shouldn't be nearer than 10,000 miles from an England ODI, but he is desperate to play in a World Cup and he has so much influence within the ECB he got his way.
  • Cook is not a one day player.........a great Test batsman but not a 50-over man

everybody knows it except for Cook and the (so called) coach/manager .. Bell is not a powerful one day player either and I have doubts about Root .. Buttler and Morgan are either ton or none men .. other than that the England batting is just fine ((:>)
  • Hales MUST play. This is absolute bollocks.
  • The England selectors really have got themselves into a sticky corner here.
Everyone knows that Cook shouldnt be in the team, yet they continue to pick him. At some time you would expect that they are going to have to back-track and drop him - or have FIFA infiltrated the England selectors and expect us to put with this bollox of picking Cook for ODI's? - how stupid do they think we are? Also, playing Hales alongside Ali would provide the left-right combo that most sides strive for as opening partnerships.
  • I think we are missing the point here. It was not the batting that was the problem today it was the bowling. Gurney and Stokes were horse shit, Woakes wasn't much better. We bowled so many wides and buffet balls it was ridiculous.
My final point is Cook is not a one day batsman, it is crazy that two of the best one day batsmen in England in Taylor and Hales are carrying the drinks.

Second ODI start delayed by rain - reduced to 45 overs a side. England win the toss and bat first.

21-1 off 5 overs. Ali out for 2 in the second over.

    Cook 14 off 18
    Bell 3 off 5
