A lot of the bands mentioned have surely been nominated because of what they have become which has tainted what they were and why they became huge.
Early U2 was raw & angry and brought something different to the party.
Joshua Tree was an album revered worldwide and still one of my all time fave albums - yet I never listen to it because, like many folk, I think Bono has disappeared up his own backside and it has tarnished the original energy it gave off and the pleasure it gave to so many.
The Beatles were a revelation, we even studied their lyrics to Eleanor Rigby for O Level English.
McCartney turned into a knob, disappeared up his own backside and, again, tainted the magic and aura they so originally created.
Then came Radiohead - once described in one of the top music journals as, "The greatest band in history".
It was all hype and hysterics - Emperor's new clothes syndrome.
In reality they were absolutely underwhelming - and that is being kind.
So, there are bands who walked the walk, such as The Beatles, The Stones, U2 and Bowie - and they earned their stripes.
Then there are bands who talked the talk but succeeded on hype and heavy promotion such as Radiohead.
The difference in any walk of life between walking the walk and talking the talk is chalk & cheese.
Kanye West gets my vote - I have no problem with the genre - just that he has turned into a total knob. Someone needs to have an urgent word......
I have no Beatles music on my iPod, whatsoever but liked a lot of their stuff at the time.
My wife and I have seen The Killers three times, loved Kasabian live and Kings of Leon created one helluva'n atmosphere when we saw them at the NEC 2 years ago.
Even Duran Duran were good live.
So, we like what we like but pretentious bands always end up getting the thumbs down.5 -
Ok, as anticpated, most of my favourite bands were named.
I give you Bros, Kajagoogoo & Bucks Fizz.1 -

Not going to mention genres I don't like or stuff that only aspires to be pop music but there's a couple of artists who I reckon are definitely over-rated, namely Paul Weller and Elvis Costello. They get enormous respect for their approach and not selling out, etc, but I think their music isn't that great - there are flashes of genius of course (The Jam, Olivers Army, Shipbuilding) but most of the rest I've heard does little for me. Fair play to them both for staying true to their artistic vision, but the good stuff was 35 years ago....2

Which is why threads like this are so pointless. They start off ok then people just get silly, start naming whole genres and confuse 'overrated' with 'I don't like'. Then before you know it every artist you can think of has been named.stonewallpenalty said:So after 5 pages pretty much every solo artist/ band is over-rated.

for example
No I dont like Sam Smith, and yet he has had number ones and I even heard him mentioned with the next Bond theme
so to me he is very overrated1 -
U2, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson
All three have a huge following, but their turnout is dross. I half take on board early U2 from a previous post, but it's a drop in a pointless ocean.0 -
A cross-city gift from me to you. A list of truly awful bands. Whether they were/are actually rated at all is another matter but, seeing as this thread veered away from overrated bands some time ago, I thought I'd give you these pearlers........
Pretty Ricky
Wings
Fleet Foxes
Rush
Pearl Jam
Animal Collective
LCD Soundsystem
Dave Matthews Band1 -
I'm going to try and comment again now after failing so miserably the other day... the power of drink ey
I truly love 94/95 era Oasis and Definitely Maybe is one of my favourite albums of all time. What's the Story is good but it doesn't excite me anywhere near as much as their debut. From then on I find their tunes almost unbearable. I do love them but for me Oasis are the most overrated band ever
