My stance with all Charlton sales from now is that it doesn't really matter if he is sold for £10 or £10m, there is no evidence that it will all be invested back into Charlton. Liege have sold players for 64m EUR and have paid out for 24m EUR since Roland bought them. We will sometimes benefit from the group aspect, other times others may benefit.
I just wanted to see him play for us and develop for another season, was one of the things I was looking forward to most.
I couldn't give a toss if Charlton become 3.5m richer or 7m richer. I'm a football fan, not a spreadsheet enthusiast.

3.5m is a total piss take. We've been well and truly mugged if that fee is true.
Also this bit in that article annoys me:

How much did Gareth bale leave saints for a few years back. A left back at the time, about the same age and a fee of about £8 million approx if I remember right. If the big clubs want him then pay the rate we want if not they can bugger off!0

It pains me how much football transfer fees have become warped in today's day and age. Unless Roland pockets it, £4 million could do a hell of a lot for our club. Like bringing back the opera singer on the final day of the season.2

If it is 5-6m up front with add ons to 10m then for a 17 year old with around 20 first team games to his name, I think we've done well.
No point bitching about it, as soon as Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City are mentioned Joe's eye will have come off the CAFC ball. Who can blame him, the Premiership is such that a 4-5 year deal with any of the above will make him and his family for life.
Hopefully we now focus on getting absolutely the best deal for the club and with Arsenal and Man City being mentioned, who knows perhaps the price will bump up.
I doubt Joe was a player we were actively looking to move on, so we could see an adjust of the transfer budget upwards.10 -
Seems like the best we can hope for is a bidding war. What's another 1-2m to the big boys for a future England star.1

Although the money would be nice, IF we get to splash some, the biggest problem with selling Joe at this point will be the message it sends. To our better players, to our opponents, to us the fans. Even though Roland is a half-billionaire CAFC are still cheapskates. A relatively low wage structure and snatching the hand off the first big-time charlie that come along waving the chequebook. Never serious about building a team capable of challenging for the Premier League again.2

Except no hands have been bitten off at all, yet. In fact, the up front price has now apparently nearly doubled! Let's just see what price Gomez does go for, if at all, before we start wringing our hands about business practices. It could well be just as accurate to say that CAFC are a club that can and do produce top prospects, but if you want them then you'd better be willing to pay good money, up front, for them. And in that, we are hardly alone.1

Gutted if he goes, RD has enough money to bet £10M on transfer fees this summer and sell JG next if it doesn't work out.
Could not care about the money, just want to see one of our excellent young prospects play more than a few games for us.
Jenks, JGomez, Poyet, Palmer, Shelvey....add all of their appearances together and it is less than the amount of games we got out of Therry Racon!6 -
The fact he is an excellent business man and not primarily a football nut, is, some might argue, part of the problem. And that appears to be the master plan which Powell and Dyer baulked at. Last season we had a midfield of Gudmundsson, Buyens, Cousins and Bulot. All under 25, most with two years left on their contracts last summer, now just 12 months.Lincsaddick said:

3.5m doesn't go a long way if you're buying proven
But contrast that to Pritchard, Jackson, Stephens/Poyet and Harriott the season before.
For sure we are a shop window but the thing is we always were! Only this time the merchandise goes for a much higher price. We got peanuts for Palmer and compensation for Poyet whereas now Gomez (and others) will go for much bigger fees. Right now we have several players who could fetch decent fees and that covers our losses as well as paying for the next wave of recruitment.
As you say, when we're struggling, older reinforcements are brought in on short term deals but they are not part of the long term. I really hope if we are flying it one season then decent players are acquired in January to push us into the play-offs.
Personally I think this only works for the fans if the club squad improves every six or 12 months. If we, as a club, stand still in 12th then fans will rightly say that selling top talent is short sighted and completely ignores the prospects of FAPL revenues. But if we can sell talent, minimise losses AND improve every season then that's a model which works! Contrast that to many Championship clubs with aging squads and losses of 10M per annum

Lol so 1m a couple of weeks ago, then 3.5 then 4 then 6 then 8 now 9. The rate of inflation so far suggests when we eventually sell him we'll be getting ridiculous amounts of money!2
