Summer 2018 transfer rumours

We’ll probably miss Josh’s defensive qualities more than his ability in front of goal. Assume that Bowyer was allowed to bring Taylor in on the premise that either Igor or Josh went and Igor’s injury meant it had to be Josh.
Extremely concerned about the size of our squad now.2 -
I just see it as a bonus, but max 5 or 10% of his job.Pelling1993 said:I couldn't give a toss if my striker can defend from corners, give me a goal scorer anyday

Actually his "7 goals in 1 season" were all scored in a 3 month period - until Karl Robinson came to Charlton, changed the system to 1 target man up front.Todds_right_hook said:
No. 7 goals in one season in a Charlton shirt equals to 7 goals a season on average. He scored a similar amount on loan at Swindon. So that’s around 14 in two seasons. I agree that this is a poor record and he should be moved on. It would be interesting to see the goals per minutes comparison with Magennis over the last two seasons. I bet Magennis has played more minutes but Ajose has a better record overal.Swisdom said:3.5 goals per season. I take it all back. Should have gone to Russia. Makes Josh’s 10 goals a season and many defensive contributions seem trifling.
He’s crap. He’s arrogant. He slow and he’s small. He doesn’t have a trick, doesn’t seem to have much of a football brain. Look at his Swindon glory season - most goals were tap-ins. He’s still living off that.
I agree Karlan deserves a chance and I do think he has got the ability to do well, but we need more options up front and we need to make sure they don’t have Ajose on the back of the shirt.
Ajose didn't fit in that system, was soon excluded and loaned out.
Even with Russell Slade's 'orrible style of football and geriatric slow midfield, Ajose was still on course for 15 + goals that season.

Yeah agreed it is a plus to have a good aerial presence, but Magennis' attacking hold up play is well well below par, the few games that Leon Best played showed Magennis how to properly hold the ball upJamesSeed said:

Of course goals are more important but the extra goals will be cancelled out if we’re leaking more at set pieces down the other end.Pelling1993 said:I couldn't give a toss if my striker can defend from corners, give me a goal scorer anyday

also with Konsa gone, Magennis will be unavailable in international weeks and we won't have enough internationals to call the games off0

If Josh goes , he needs to be replaced . But I doubt we will get anyone with our skinflint owner . The squad is getting smaller and the season only a week away - madness .0

Woah woah, Bowyer, not Robinson fella.se9addick said:We’ll probably miss Josh’s defensive qualities more than his ability in front of goal. Assume that Robinson was allowed to bring Taylor in on the premise that either Igor or Josh went and Igor’s injury meant it had to be Josh.

People judging Magennis on scoring only 10 goals for each of 2 seasons seem to overlook that's it a team game, and he will be playing to his manager's instructions.
Robinson invariably made an exhausted Magennis play 90 mins + added time every game, simply because it was also his job to do the defensive set piece duties.
In Robinson's 4-2-3-1, he was the hard running 'sacrificial lamb' who put in the graft and physical challenges to create the space for the attacking midfielders to score the goals.
Magennis is no poacher, but despite lack of support, he still got himself in the right position at the right time to be on the end of goalscoring opportunities - and was often at full stretch. Okay he missed chances he should have put away, but then all forwards miss good chances; and 1 goal every 3 chances is normally regarded by coaches as a decent return.
And don't forget the vital confidence factor - if you're scoring regularly, even the flukey shots go in. If you're on a barren run, then nothing goes right for you.
It's a team game though. And providing team mates are scoring goals, it's expected that the lone target man won't himself score as many as he might do in a 2 up front combination.
IMO Magennis brought much more to the team than many give him credit for.

He’s ok, nothing more than that. Played about 55 games last season for club and country so big respect for that. Could be a blessing in disguise if bow plays KAG and Taylor up top.0

10 in 39 games two years ago, 10 in 42 games this year. Those are midfielder stats whichever way you slice them. Sorry just my opinion but he won't be missed for me.1

Freddie Woodman incoming ?1

That would be a bloody good signing!!J BLOCK said:Freddie Woodman incoming ?
He'll be a top Goalkeeper if given a chance3 -
Mention of Leon Best above. Must be on comeback trail by now. Would be a great addition to the squad when fit, as evidenced by his brief cameo for us last season.2

its all very well people saying he wont be missed but who the hell else is there?
the transfer period ends in less than two weeks and our squad is looking as if it would struggle to even make it to mid table and that's without factoring in our appalling record with injuries.0 -

Agreed, people seem to have forgotten about him, but he was a bit of a live wire I thought.harveys_gardener said:Mention of Leon Best above. Must be on comeback trail by now. Would be a great addition to the squad when fit, as evidenced by his brief cameo for us last season.

You're judging him on bare statistics though, not the entire self-sacrificing job he was asked to do for the team.Manicmania said:10 in 39 games two years ago, 10 in 42 games this year. Those are midfielder stats whichever way you slice them. Sorry just my opinion but he won't be missed for me.
And rarely do statistics tell the full story.

Freddie Woodman is a decent young prospect but we would be developing somebody else's young prospect whilst holding our own back.8

Nice guy and a genuine trier but bang average notwithstanding how he was used. I’d have liked to keep him as back up for Taylor but that would be sensible and we don’t do sensible so hey ho. Three or four injuries/suspensions and the mascots will be getting a game. We could easily be relegation fodder this season. Our best available 11 on paper look good but at least three of them will be out at any one time and there is no depth. Maybe some of our kids will turn out to be unexpected worlds beaters.0

To finish more of the chances that were made for him or on occasion he created for himself eg Bradford. Never enough goals from him, should of been 15 minimum and that was easily achievable in the division.guinnessaddick said:
The best he has got in a season is 10, he has scored that in his last two seasons for us and once before for Kilmarnock, not sure what more you can expect from him.JamesSeed said:
His lack of goals may have cost us promotion last season. Keeping him as our main striker was a typical demonstration of our lack of ambition under the current owner I think.BigRedEvil said:Disappointed if Magennis is going. Decent hard working pro and we won't replace him.

Second serious knee injury in relatively quick succession, wouldn't be surprised if he was donekillerandflash said:

so josh will be playing in the Championship something that seems further away from CAFC daily. So only the BFG and Fosu left to flog and we can all fucking cheer as Skippy comes hoping over Shootershill to save us1
