Just wondered if a plan has already been drawn up of players to keep and players to let go and what positions we’ll be targeting in the summer, got to get our business done early, or we’ll be in this division a few more seasons burning cash.

There will be a plan.
I'm sure Gallen already has a plan for players to fit the formation Jackson has chosen and identified players available on a free this summer.
Problem is, most players will have multiple suitors going after them. This is why we end up with the plan x/y/z or a freebie in late August.1 -
Yer big fucking clear out4
-
The plan needs to involve the best free players (in the positions we need covering) available joining us on the 1st July, rather than the likes of Ipswich and Wigan3
-
Keep Dobson and AMB , bin the rest .1
-
We keep hearing from Gallen, Sandgaard etc. that it's about consistency now and not having to sign 10+ players each year. Sadly I think that's the exact opposite of what we need. If we start off the summer by re-signing the likes of Matthews, Pearce, etc. it's going to be just another horrible season.17

The paln is to haggle over a couple of quid here and thereand miss out, sign a couple of players because they were good on some kids championship manager save and end up signing a couple of injured has beens from Gallen's mates?
Well it worked last summer didn't it?1 -

There's a lot wrong with Matthews.14 -
The plan should be to start the process now. Start talking to agents & players about next season. Decide who we are going to offer contracts too before the end of March & have them signed before the end of the season.
Then start bringing the players in well before pre season starts. We should aim to have the nucleus of the squad by July 1st (say 15/16 players) & the other half a dozen before the end of July. Start the opening game of the season with your favoured 18. Obviously there might be 1 or 2 you add before the end of August but you need to hit the ground running.
Which is the complete opposite of this season where we started the season without a fit left back & only on deadline did we managed to fill it (with a player who'd been out with a long term injury & has since left the club). We also drafted in another recently injured player who again is no longer with us ( Arter) and started the season without knowing our best 11, let alone best 18 man matchday squad.
But then again, who's going to listen to me.11 -

First up sign 15 new players fit enough to play 90mins per game twice a week and who do not have underlying injury problems. Then release those who fail those from tests.3

Did Souare leave, not that I'm aware?2 -

Hopefully one of the issues amongst the players at the moment is the likes of Gunter | Souare | Watson
Bet all three are amongst our highest earners, yet aren't earning it on a Saturday afternoon
Wouldn't be surprised if there are some in the squad who aren't happy about that, and its creating a bit of disharmony in the dressing room - Hope none of them are in the playing squad for next year. Not just that either, but hope we move away from trying to sign "names" e.g. am sure that Defoe would have been an asset but I would have feared that he'd have been in the same class as those three mentioned.
Next season need to aim to build a squad of players that know League One... Your Scott Fraser's etc.
Comes back to something that Keith Peacock says on the Centenary DVD - Need to go back to having a squad of players with none of them thinking that they're Superstars amongst the squad, even if they might be better than those around them.
Secondly need to stop asking ourselves which players we think can step up to the Championship
If we can win League One then there is the potential for the squad (if it can stay together) to build on its success, and play at the level above on a high like we've seen from so many other promoted teams... Yes there will be those who cant take the step up, and they (sadly) get moved on, like what we saw with Danny Hollands.
But there is no point trying to build a Championship squad now, when we're no where near there6 -

Under what circumstances would Souare be one of our top earners?!? Surely not.1

Watson
Gunter
Mathews
Morgan
Kirk
Davison
Leco
Plus several others all need replacing by much better players if we are serious about promotion.
I'd be really pissed off if we keep any of the above.1 -
Copying this thread at the end of August and pasting it next February as 'A plan for summer 2023' would save everyone a lot of bother!9

Based on the preferred 352 with two players in each position:
GK
MacG
AMB
RCB
Clare
(new)
CB
Innis
Lavelle
LCB
Famewo
(new)
RWB
Jaiyesimi
(new)
LWB
(new)
(new)
CDM
Dobson
(new)
CM
Fraser
Morgan
CM
Gilbey
JFC
FWD
Washington
(new)
STK
Stockley
Aneke
YOUTH (on the fringes)
Kanu
Elewere
Henry
CBT - harsh but where does he fit in? One of him or Jaiyesimi has to go.
Purrington - also slightly harsh but we have to move on if we’re opting for wing backs.
All others not mentioned - sorry, not sorry.
The slots highlighted as “(new)” are vital acquisitions to make it work, particularly the wing back positions. We also need a bit of luck, as bad as we’ve been our injuries are just so frustrating and unlucky in most cases. Take JFC for example, Lavelle never been injured until he signs for us, Stockley rarely injured until now etc.
You’ll laugh, but I don’t think we’re far off, I just hope it all gets assembled quicker than last summer.5 -

The one thing so would say is there can be no excuses next season not to be completely prepared for the start. This season was lost at the start given the fact we only had 11 senior players available for the first game. We need get as many of our players in or out and be something resembling decent squad by the start of pre season2

Not signing injury prone players would be a start, but we also want players who can do the business week in week week out, not just when they fancy it or the suns shining the right way, where do we get those sort of players from?
Seriously lacking in consistency at the moment (what do you expect with 3 starting strikers out) I still think we’re lacking in creativity and steel in midfield.4
