It is important that everyone takes sensible precautions to look after themselves, so that our health services are not put under further pressure.
The comments I've seen on social media show that there are many who don't understand the problems these unprecedented temperatures will cause, and they do need to be given advice on how to cope.

Why is it that when anything like this happens, it's always the ones going on about people getting hysterical that manage to sound the most hysterical?29

Telling people to not go out running in extreme heat is not scientific advice - it is common sense.A simple ‘ the weather is gonna be really hot for a few days, be sensible and check on the elderly and vulnerable’ type message would be fine.4 -

What’s also tiring is seeing people compare our weather to other countries, or continents for that matter. We are the UK, getting weather in the 40’s is not normal and it is not okay. The heat we feel here is also so different to heat abroad. The UK is not designed for extreme heat like we are going to get, the houses, the transport, even the built up cities the way they are. London especially is an overcrowded and largely concrete jungle. It’s a recipe for disaster.Sure there will be an element of scaremongering from the media and news outlets, there always is and Covid was the same to a degree, but I actually think it’s about time when in comes to the weather because I know people can have their own opinions, but I’d like someone to come to me with hard facts to say climate change and global warming isn’t here and happening right now. Because it is.
It might not bother everyone, you might not care. But I do. I’m still young, I don’t want my future children suffering in a world that’s already tough enough because the people of now didn’t care enough about what’s around them.
This might only be a couple of days extreme heat for now, but it could happen again this summer, it could happen again next summer. It almost certainly will happen again in the next few years.
The old rhetoric of the natural cycle of climate change etc is boring, lazy, weak, and largely not true. However, it’s been repeated so often you have many who repeat it because they believe it, whilst disregarding the evidence that’s staring them in the face.
The other things to consider are the NHS are on their knees, already over worked and playing catch up all the time, emergency services completely overrun, but the next couple of days will be so much worse. The 999 calls will skyrocket, the response times will drag on for hours longer, working conditions will be far worse in a hot and sticky environment as it is already.
People will unfortunately die because of this heat. And sure, good and bad things happen every day to all people, but no one in the UK should die because of extreme heat that we have never experienced before. And that, that is all our own doing.
So please can we stop comparing our weather and history and trends to that of places thousands of miles away when a little island like us is not supposed to experience this.19 -

I don't ever remember the over the top news coverage, schools closing and the general bitching and moaning when we've had hot weather before. It's going to be hot for a few days, everyone should keep a sense of perspective and get over it. Lord help me if it was raining everyone would be saying what a shitty summer it is. Now it's hot, loads are moaning about that too.
*checks notes to see what the Churchill blitz spirit brigade are moaning about this week whilst simultaneously calling everyone else a snowflake*
..Warnings about weather from weather warnings people! What do we want?! Less warnings!! When do we want it?! Now!!

Me.
I'm not going in for the 2 days wont be getting paid as self employed.
For me I'm not worried about the money.
There will be not doubt thousands of self employed people up and down the country though who are worried about losing 2 days money and cant afford to lose that money.
I should imagine a few of these will top up going to work and end up in a bad way.
Over the next few days we will hear how many more thousands of 999 calls we have had over the 2 days.
Not all of these calls will be the persons fault.
All the horror headlines, dire warnings and panic actually changes nothing. If anything probably makes people panic more.
Gonna be hot and unpleasant for those not used to it but do we need nannying to deal with it? Some of these comments have me wondering about the education system.2 -
Looks like people are staying at home. Only 2 other people on the first 161 instead of the usual 10 or so and hardly any traffic.0

I've not actually called anyone on here a snowflake.
I'm merely suggesting common sense is the best way to deal with this and have been shot down in flames for not following the scientific advice. The advice I read wasn't scientific, it was common sense.
Clearly youre the kind of chap that isn't too independent of mind. If my memory serves me correctly you believed all the brexit nonsense and voted for it, then got buyers remorse. So I'll be spared the lectures on snowflakes, gammons and the easily lead from you my friend. If this wasn't you I will retract the last paragraph.

But seriously though, why you bothered about a warning? What’s the worst that can happen? Because the best that can happen is some idiots life is saved (I agree with what you said about idiots but idiots perhaps need warning).2 -
Dogs walked. Now then, for a day at work. Wonder what the ambulance situation will be like....... Wishing everyone connected with ambulance services today (and all days) a manageable shift.
My Addick offspring has finally had her appendix operation overnight at Manchester and is in pain but in recovery. Many thanks to all colleagues in NHS.15 -

So please can we stop comparing our weather and history and trends to that of places thousands of miles away when a little island like us is not supposed to experience this.As Sage says, we’re not a country built for this heat (nor can we be). This goes for continental Europe as well. 58 measured in Southern Spain over the weekend. What happens next year when we have a week of these type of temperatures, or the year after that? We’re in an absolute mess as a planet, and this might be 2 days of extreme heat, but for many people it’s going to cause problems, some may be unlucky and some will suffer serious health problems and unfortunately some people will lose their lives. I for one hope all the extra information being pumped out, means as many people avoid anything bad happening as possible9 -
Somehow my train in this morning is cooler than usual. Not sure I’ll be saying that on the way home at 6pm though.0

Just reading about the 1911 heatwave, the only recorded temperature in the UK top 10 that wasn't since the 1990s (1976, who are they? Exaccccctly). They changed the working hours for quarry workers, there was widespread striking and people died. Proper softies back then.0

Good job we didn't have to rely on that generation to fight in a world war.1 -

I drive to work, then walk over to the gym for a swim in the outdoor pool. It was very warm this morning walking over, about 22 degrees at 8.00am here in Southampton. It's also a flying ant day!0

Tips for old folk:
You don't have to wear a vest under a shirt despite what your mum said in 1949
Don't have sex today or tomorrow
Get the old tin bath out and fill it with cold water and submerge.
Give the carvery a miss despite your local pub doing £5.99 on Monday & Tuesday for seniors.
Don't go out midday unless you are a mad dog or an Englishman
Don't get annoyed
Stop going upstairs for no reason especially as you live in a bungalow
Don't moan and groan, be thankful you are still breathing and nature has allowed you another day
Have a cool day11 -
