These "haven't spent a penny" lot don't seem to equate an out of contact player needing a signing bonus, probable agents fee etc. Not to mention paying up Garner's contract, that wasn't free.
It is alleged that the Pope money is being paid in instalments and we get a percentage over the £1.5mill fee Burnley supposedly agreed with us. So the £2mill Newcastle allegedly paid so far for Pope is no where near the 20% of the £20+ million people thought the Pope fee would be at the start of summer.
The 1mill for Burstow has probably already gone keeping everything running (not even considering the increase in costs of literally keeping the lights on - approx 250% increase like other businesses).
Unless someone else's pockets are sufficiently deep enough to bankroll an odds on title winning side, pay all debts, agree to Roland's rediculous demands to purchase the ground and Sparrows Lane and be happy to write off £8mill+ a year (and then agree to chucking in 5-10x that amount after getting back into the Championship to even just stand still and not get relegated.)then we need to get behind the team and Garner.

Garner played at Swindon with both McKirdy and Davison up front at different times and used them differently. Davison as more of an out and out striker like Stockley and McKirdy as a player able to rotate with his wingers to create space through uncertainty of marking. It was McKirdy who got the massive goal return, so it stands to reason that being able to play a striker with his movement could change a lot for us. Bringing in another striker who is more like Stockley in that he's just an out and out striker limits our ability to change things around and I don't think Garner would like that as much as the flexibility someone like McKirdy would offer.killerandflash said:

It feels to me that we have a half decent squad this year that has the potential to do better than last year but is lacking that little bit of quality from a couple of decent additional signings to get to close to achieving a play-off position after 46 games. If those signings aren't made by the time the window closes then I think TS can safely assume he will be on the hook for another year of ~£8 M losses. He might find the £1M of cost savings but I don't see him increasing revenue by £3M to reduce losses to £4M. Maybe funding £4-8M per annum of losses ad infinitum is palatable to him for the doubtful kudos of owning an English football club, but I honestly don't see that changing any time soon without bringing more investment into the club.

Was it purely a case of we said ‘we don’t want you anymore.’ Or did he say he wanted to explore other options?
Fwiw, I liked Washington but I don’t think he fits this system particularly. He was always rubbish out wide and his shooting/hold up play/heading were not good enough to play in the strikers position.

The window is like playing multiple games of poker simultaneously.
And you don't win at poker by showing the world your hand.
I do hope we secure the players Garner feels he needs to provide a competitive squad to try for promotion in this window.
If Garner has a good season and we narrowly miss out on promotion I can see him in the Championship next season without us.
He is obviously ambitious and wasn't desperate to hang around and have another go at securing L1 football with Swindon, despite narrowly missing out...5 -

He tried that with Kirk (failed), Lavelle (failed). It may work with Dobson and Clare but I think both are out of contract end of this season. Kirk hasn't failed yet. We may well sell him for more than we bought him for. Kirk now is much better than Kirk last season. Lavelle was a purchase that hasn't lost value yet either as far as I am aware?

For Ben Garner's sake I hope we get a forward in who can cover all 3 forward positions. ( Can score and make assists which should be mandatory for playing in any of the 3 front positions and play off/near to Jayden when possible.

Don't we do that, too (Burstow etc)? It's just that we haven't had any valuable assets to sell in the past few seasons. Maybe I’m in the minority, but i actually feel quite positive about the season ahead, and have really enjoyed the football so far this season, granted it couldn’t get much worse.
This league is extremely tight, team morale and togetherness is important and it feels like we have that this year.
Yes we could do with another LB, CB and Striker, but no one should be demanding it.None of us know the financial ins and outs and ultimately it’s not our money to spend.I could do with a couple more team members at work to take our service levels up to the next level, but I won’t get that, there are financial constraints that I have to work within.I’m confident will be in and around the playoffs.27
