Yup can confirm there are plenty of religious nuts (and in this country not just the US) that believe man walked with dinosaurs only a few thousand years ago before the flood.
They are so defiant in their beliefs that they are convinced the science is wrong and all a big conspiracy to trick us. Carbon dating is faked. It's all basically fake.
Or maybe the science is right and the fairy tale is wrong?0 -

With these crackpot theories, I always ask the theorist, why? What does anyone have to gain from making it up? I can see what religion has to gain from their side - money from the gullible and power over the easily led, but what do thousands and thousands of scientists and historians have to gain over hundreds of years of work? Moon landing deniers and flat earthers too - what's to be gained by continuing the "lie" about landing on the moon or pretending the earth isn't "spherical"? Why go to all that trouble for no gain?

Going slightly off piste but the Supreme Court in Alabama has just ruled that frozen human embryos are children. This ruling combined with other ludicrous bits of US legislation is likely to mean that IVF treatment is not going to be happening in that backwater.
I was drawn to this quote from one of the Supreme Court nutjobs Judges. Concurring with the majority opinion, Chief Justice Tom Parker wrote: "Even before birth, all human beings have the image of God, and their lives cannot be destroyed without effacing his glory."
Having read this redneckery, it comes as no surprise to learn that this particular dinosaur was elected to his position rather than being granted it by virtue of his erudite legal brilliance.9 -

I used to go out with a girl from Alabama and whilst she was fairly cosmopolitan and (relatively) liberal in her views, her sister was the wife of an Alabama preacher and you could not meet a better example of the Christian Right that dominates the deep south in America. Its the same with climate change, every possible indicator and piece of evidence shows its happening but because the idea that people are abusing this planet and its limited resources and might cause the end of the world contradicts their belief that every person is planned and put here by God on his perfect planet and he will bring the end of the world they cant handle it.1 -

In addition to all this professional scientific activity, there are millions of people around the planet who take a keen interest in the creatures we share it with. And yet with all this going on, we still cannot say with certainty how many species there are. Best estimates suggest that there are probably around 1.7 million. But every year, new species are discovered for the very fist time.
If you wanted to collect that many species, you'd need to gather roughly 58 unique species every day for 80 years*. Just finding that many would be mind bogglingly difficult, now imagine catching them and keeping them and providing food for them and keeping them in the required habitats without allowing any of them the predate upon the others. Never letting a single one die. The whole notion is complete and utter nonsense.
*You might think that I'd chosen 80 years as an approximation of modern life expectancy, but no, its actually what the bible says Noah's age was when the flood occurred (600), minus his age when he started building the ark (520). If those figures alone don't set alarm bells ringing as to the feasibility of this story, then you may be one dendrite short of a neurone.6 -
