I agree with almost all of that except when you see the goal back Kelman does look across a couple of times to see who is with him. Which is great, I love a striker going for the goal but I also love a player making sure and squaring for a guaranteed tap in over getting the glory. JRC was too far behind so Kelman took the shot, which was the right choice in the momentmayoboy said:I thought Kelman reminded me of Derek Hales for that goal.He had no right to win that ball, he went shoulder to shoulder with their defender and won that battle and then sprinting onto goal he had only one thing on his mind which was to hit the shot and make the goalkeeper produce a good save. That is precisely what I want my strikers to do, sprint towards the goal, shoot and not make a backwards pass which gives their defenders a chance to get back.Well done Kelman and especially for Costello for busting a gut to get in the box.Kelman looks like a brilliant signing.Very strong and quick and can score or has a proven record of scoring.I thought the short passing link up play on the edge of the box between Costello, Campbell, Kelman and Coventry was excellent and we really should have scored from the numerous chances we made.13 -
If you mean his shot in the first half then that is not a miss. He overpowered the defender & managed to get a shot away whilst still being harried by the defender. Shot from 20 ysrfscwhich the keeper had to save......not an easy save as the shot was not a powder puff one straight at him.PrincessFiona said:
I thought Leaburn looked knackered - he puts in a shift. Shame about the main miss2121 said:Great point!
costello was great.Kaminski good saves (although always parries it back into the danger area)
kelman also great.Surprised leaburn didnt come off as was holding his hamstring early into second half and, i thought, was generally ineffective.11 -

Totally agree should have won it everyone worked hard and kept us in the game and tbh we had the bigger threat I can't take away anything from the attackers for the effort but the fact for all there good attributes leaburn holding it up winning countless headers etc and TC getting in crosses, olaofe getting into good positions for shots etc they all lack that extra bit of class and it's something we are lacking.Croydon said:Great gritty performance to earn a point, and to be honest I feel like we should have won it.
Some quality and composure from any of Leaburn, TC or Tanto and that would have been 3 vital points.
JRC oozed class today. Bell quality again.1 -
I’d also like to see that team tbf. I think today though we were probably worried about Mason-Clark who Apter would have had no hope defending against. He didn’t start in the end but obviously we didn’t know that before teams came out. Probably wanted Bree and Burke on that side to guard against that threatgolfaddick said:

Playing Apter and TC at wing back is suicidal. Just look at the Southampton game where we tried 2 wingers as wing backs. Bree plays because there is no one else, when he’s fit he’s a good player but it’s obvious he is not fitgolfaddick said:

Apter, Burke, Jones, Gillesphey, Bell.
Its Brew that needs replacing. And the line up above also frees up TC.0 -
Enjoyed the game. Two teams going for it and is looking like we could hold our own against the league leaders. True, Kaminski made the more saves but we were certainly
not short of attacking intent.JRC was excellent. He had a great second half and could be the ball carrying midfielder we need. His play around their box with his quick feet and incisive passing was great to watch. He linked very well with TC and Kelman I thought.
Speaking of TC I thought he had his best game for a while. Yes the end product needs improving but he looked a real threat second half. One moment on the first half where he sprinted back a good 60 yards to win the ball seemed to galvanise him.
Other positives were Bell who scares the life out of me at times when in possession but is a class act. He’s the player Ramsay should be looking up to and emulating if he is to fulfil his potential.
Kelman did all aspects of his role really
well and in Leaburn had a willing partner up
front.
It’s a shame a couple of crosses weren’t converted and there were a few blocked shots that on another day may have sneaked in.Need to take that form to Blackburn and go for the three points.7 -
Why not let Coventry worry about OUR player rather than US worry about theirs.NabySarr said:

From around the 70th minute or so they was getting way too much space on the left wing and it needed freshening up I agree.golfaddick said:

Really good performance, especially considering our results lately, the end to the last match and the opponents today. JRC has made a difference, as have Bell and Burke, and it would be great to see TC off of the wing back position again so he can play his natural game more. Hope we bring in a LWB asap.2

Why Joe Rankin-Costello was not given a start until halfway through this season is a mystery to me. The bloke is a midfielder. He runs, he tackles, he beats people, he plays with his head up.Sometimes I despair Jones when you watch that performance from JRC and he has been sat on the bench all season. He must be shit in training.A good performance from all concerned this afternoon. No one had a bad game and a performance that is required between now and the end of the season.
Special mention for the back 3. Bar the goal were solid. Doubtful all 3 will stay fit but keep em crossed12 -
So he made two saves then.Doomer Jon said:

Great point & could have been all three. We’ve been the better team in 3 of the last 4 games now.JRC has been brilliant two games in a row, really pleased to see him get the goal.Pretty sure Bree is playing injured and not sure about the ‘get rid’ comments, we play WB’s so doing that would leave us with…none (fit at least).Interesting about Leaburn, because of injuries this is the most league minutes he’s had on pitch since the 22/23 season (1386 vs 1822 in 22/23). Think he’s improving bit by bit each game (aerial duels, hold up, pass accuracy, shot per game regularity) and needs consistent game time for that to continue.15

Well, that was good!
Had an unusual insight today, had a Coventry season ticket holder mate in with me. He had major concerns they started without Mason-Clark or Sakamoto - their 2 wingers. As it turned out Mason-Clark only came on after 86 minutes and Sakamoto didn't make it off the bench. Cov mate really didn't like that change in formation and called a draw before kick-off, much to my surprise and liking.
As for us, Costello - wow! What a sight to behold, a midfielder with head up, marauding forwards, with great purpose. Pressing, passing, all on song. In another moment he showed intricate skill to turn his man in their box. I've said in other threads we need new signings to see an upturn in our fortunes... we've seen so little of JRC that his sudden arrival on the scene feels like a new signing. Hopefully these two decent performances in a row is the start of a lot more to come. Seemed to have a hamstring issue towards the end, I hope nothing serious there.
Off the ball our pressing was more effective than I can recall in months, and our levels didn't drop all game. Leaburn was a beast again.
Before the game I called for heads not to drop with any setbacks, otherwise we'd be toast. How many of us feared another Southampton after Coventry didn't have to break sweat to take a third minute lead? Very impressed how we brushed that off and quickly got back into the game.
Kelman was third favourite to get the ball when we broke forward for the goal, excellent stuff from him to win the ball, let alone carry it forward and take a shot. He won't get an assist for the goal but his was an intelligent shot that might lead to an opportunity off the keeper. And who won the three horse race that began in our penalty area to get to the rebound first? JRC.16 -
Good point really could have been 3, our confidence in the opposition box is questionable
Superb show by Rankin-Costello
Tupac isnt a wingback and I feel a bit sorry for him trying to learn in the 2nd tier
So important we didn't lose
Another shit referee. Inconsistent and got the big stuff wrong12 -
Why the heck do we not start first halves like we did the second. If we can play like that for the rest of the season we will be OK. Just need a proper finisher but great play by kelman to set up the winner albeit after the keeper had made the save.7

Agree with you sporadic. Cannot fault his chasing down. But thats all i saw. Just no instinct. I want him to do as well as all other lifelong fans.SporadicAddick said:
I think that’s fair, and I perhaps should have added that this wasn’t a criticism of him, and certainly not of his effort. He’s simply not effective at this level. The stats for winning headers is one side of the coin - the stat for goals and assists is another.Bailey said:
It might be worth looking at his stats, I think he won everything in the air and the amount of covering he got through was phenomenal. I think the point about him being effective as a striker may carry some weight but once again, the role he is now playing is new to him and he is still a young player learning the game.SporadicAddick said:

to Miles, MoM for me
I was a defender of his dad in the 80s - a young lad that often couldn’t buy a goal but who was excellent at bringing others into play and creating space. At this level, at the moment, and maybe in this system, Miles can’t or doesn’t do either.
One post above praised him for tracking back and doing a slide tackle as an example of his excellent performance. That’s just doing the basics…1 -

This was one of them games were shots on target didn't tell the whole picture imo,we was getting into some dangerous positions alot in the second half, crosses that might have been gambled on better or a bit more composure in the box.CAFCTrev said:

Maybe Nathan Jones wants him to be a more influential player, I have never seen him in the position he's now being asked to play Sporadic, can he flourish in that position, maybe, but it may have a detrimental on his chances created or finished, a work in progress perhaps.SporadicAddick said:

The ref did not like giving handball decisions, we should have got a penalty for one in their area. it would have been given in the Prem.eastterrace6168 said:We got the very least we deserved with that draw, part of me is disappointed we didn't get the winner, because on chances created we would have a good shout, but a draw is a much needed point added to the total.
What a player JRC is proving to be, with MOTM performances against Portsmouth and now Coventry, why Nathan waited so long to play him is strange, he's now undroppable it seems.
Must say that so called ref was a real disgrace to the profession today, and I will also say that it looked all ends up a penalty, and also that Kitchin should have got a second yellow and been sent off for that foul on Leaburn, couldn't believe it wasn't given, the ref was a real bottle job when it came to the tough decisions,
So on we go to Ewood Park and another 6 pointer against Blackburn on Sunday, and where we are in with a great chance of all three points...0 -
Portsmouth spent the last few days wanking themselves off after their dramatic win against us only to get tonked 5 nil today.18

Leaburn is a key player for us at the moment, that isn’t necessarily me saying he’s doing a brilliant job, but we need him to get up the pitch. Against Norwich when he went off we could barely get out of our half. Maybe once we’ve got a full team out elsewhere and Costello now in midfield we can play a bit more football, but at the moment we need Leaburn as a target just to get us out of our half. Without him on the pitch today we’d have lost comfortably, as Coventry would have pressed us and we’d have had no out ballSporadicAddick said:

In previous years, whenever he’s had a consistent run of games, staying fit and playing regularly, he’s been good. He’s now had that and is definitely getting better. Hopefully he can keep it up7 -

We need a replacement for GoddenDoomer Jon said:Very disappointed with our lack of clinical edge. Same against Pompey
Should have won this. Too many balls go across this six yard box no one there. Too many opportunities to shoot and not taken and Leaburn dragging that shot wide on c82 minutes was very poor.
Apart from the two saves from Kelman in either half, their keeper made no saves.
We need Godden back urgently.

That was an unexpected treat to start the new year. As a lot of us have said, I was dreading this after the last game I saw up at Carrow Road, and especially so after that first goal rolled in.
Hopefully the starting lineup will settle down over the next few games. JRC MOTM for me. When did he become Messi?1
