Such a shame for Lindsay Vonn
It is but it was also incredibly predictable, dangerous and selfish
My thoughts exactly. Selfish to even try.
Absolute nonsense. There's nobody else in the US women's setup anywhere near the podium. She was the only one with a chance of a medal. What should she do - pull out to give somebody else a chance of getting tenth?

A US athlete won gold and is the world champion, what do you mean no one else is anywhere near the podium?
They get three skiers. Nobody outside the three that started has times anywhere near the podium. It's not like they could have subbed somebody in that had faster times in the lead up.

She’s gotta be bullshitting surely about the ACL tear? Either that or all football players with the same injury are wimps?!?

There's a nasty narrative that's been built up around her for years. She's the greatest female donwhiller of all time ffs. Sport isn't about giving people a chance - it's about medals. She earned her right to be there - it's not like she was parachuted in off the back of her reputation.

Fair enough. I don’t think it’s selfish from that respect. I think it’s selfish to ski when there’s a higher chance you will crash and affect the other competitors run’s. Of course it is part of the sport to get used to refocusing etc. but I still think it’s selfish

Yeah, that's a fair statement. But they all go into the event knowing that it's dangerous - any one of them could have a career or life threatening injury at any time. Don't think for one second it affected any of the other skiers any more than a crash for any other competitor would have done.

    Is it selfish? Ehh maybe.

    Is it fucking stupid? Yup

Skiing fucking terrifies me. It's basically controlled falling. I've never got the hang of it - despite being a good skater and being able to hit 100k/h descending on a bike --so speed isn't the issue - it just feels atrociously insecure and I've hated every second of it every time I've tried it.

Hats off to any lunatic who gets to the level of proficiency these heroes have - I'd have died dozens of times over 🤣

Watched the parallel giant slalom snowboard racing earlier. The Austrian bloke that one gold was insane through the last two gates in every race.

Maybe she was advised not to go, I don't know. I do know she went well in practise despite the injury and was widely fancied to do well. However, the risk of sustaining a more serious injury when falling, being already injured, must have been greater, even with air bags built into their suits to soften the landing. She wasn't going to get another chance though, and it's what she does best.

Yeah this is what my selfish comment was about. Not about taking someone else’s spot.

    Extremely high risk of crashing.

Needing a helicopter to take you out.

Not gonna dispute greatest skier of modern times.

Don’t be thrown off by the helicopter, standard procedure for any injury apparently. Lindsey Vonn ruptured her ACL two weeks ago, competed today and crashed

rolympics - When did we decide sledding needs a teammate

  • Bit shit from the BBC; Men's 5000m Speed Skating is on going, which they've been showing.
They've cut away from it because the BBC 2 coverage doesn't start yet, but can't just show it on iPlayer?

There’s a couple of things I’ve always wanted to do. A ride round the velodrome is one and the other is a go at the luge. Bet that’s fucking awesome.

@Leroy Ambrose as a cyclist should I be shitting myself doing a cycle track experience as my missus got me it for my bday. Think I’m more melting it from having to wear Lycra.

Was watching Brighton/Palace but was so boring I switched to the Olympics and watched our team in the curling, very entertaining, great skill. Lost to Switzerland but caught them again in the evening beating Italy.

I think we were in the semifinals even before losing to Switzerland and beating italy. Semi-final this evening

Yes!  I said exactly the same!!

The backflip was ridiculous though, backflipping onto the blade of an ice skate is crazy.

Every four years I get totally drawn into watching athletes trying to win medals for staying on their feet whilst doing the most absurd things that are most likely to result in them slipping over ⛷️

    😂

Nah, you'll be fine. Main thing to remember is that there's no freewheel, so you can't stop pedalling or you'll end up over the bars. No brake either - slowing down is achieved by letting off force on the pedals - sounds confusing but it won't take you more than five minutes to get the hang of it. Bit you'll enjoy most is when you get confident enough to go up the banking and swoop down - that's fun 😁

Hope you enjoy it - personally speaking, although track suits me because I'm what they call a 'big engine' (can ride reasonably hard all day) it also bores me - for my money it's better to watch as a spectacle than ride it.

And you'll quickly realise why track cyclists wear lycra. It's not just for aerodynamic reasons - it's fucking hot in a velodrome - if you didn't have the lycra wicking sweat away, you'd overheat inside 15 minutes!
