Could Powell Really Be Sacked?

In the end we all know the squad lacks in depth quality and that is the real problem. I like Grandpa am not adverse to criticising CP he is prone to mistakes like we all are. What he does have in abundance is integrity and honesty so for me he should remain. Whether that is the case if we are bottom 3 come end of November or we have a take over and the new owners don't fancy him is another matter.

What would be interesting is the reaction if he upped and left for another club? Would his crown slip in the eyes of the supporters?

If his team selections and results continue to be as bad as the last few weeks he is asking to be sacked. He is far too defensive minded and favours certain players, Stephens to name but one who are not worthy of a place in the team. that having been said he will probably be left in charge until either he walks or loses fans faith.

Clough wouldn't add anything to this lot of players. That's not a criticism as I think he's a good manager but Powell is just as good.

Exactly. There are imho only a couple of managers in this league who, given the same resources as Powell, could do a better job. If Zola, Pearson or Clough for example was given the job and got the same investment that Chris has been given then I don't think they could do anything more than he has. About half the managers in this league are much worse than Powell.

Not sure anyone could do better job but Powell does need to improve in certain areas especially substitions he waits to long imo to change things.

Also sometimes I really wonder what attacking training we do at sparrows lane as we seem to have few ideas going forward.

Have you not just mugged yourself off? You say that nobody could do better yet pick two areas where he performs poorly - so,logically, somebody could do better.

Would he not get us passing better? I really believe that if our passing (and movement) were improved, these players would do so much better

How about yourself BigAndy? You seem to have a sharp mind and some tactical nouse. Would you be up for it if offered?

I've only played up to just under non league - not sure if I'd be good enough! I just fail to understand why, having trained all week, we play without a plan- maybe it's the same for all struggling teams? - the Owls, for example or Sunderland. I just hope for a few positives in the next home games. As CP is relatively inexperienced, what can he call upon to help himself unless it's from his playing days?

No manager is bigger than Charlton Athletic and I wonder if all the man love for CP is blinding many of us. If it was anyone else at the helm we'd be clamoring for his head by now. Trouble is it's a catch 22 situation. We won't know if someone else could do better unless a change is made and then it could still go tits up. A damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. Something does need to change though and, on the field, I just can't see from where at the moment.

I've always wanted our revival to be with CP but I am starting to doubt it now. Sad times at Charlton Athletic but I guarantee you all that if a replacement came in and he instantly turned it around the abuse being hurled at the Board would soon stop. The trouble is nobody can read the future so who knows what would happen - it could be even worse. However, sometimes calculated risks have to be taken and maybe we're at that point.

So Rob you seriously think that if a n other was managing us and had taken us up with a record points haul and then with limited funds got us to 9th last year
and then with no further investment and a stale squad with a few other rejects joining that 8 games in to the season "we'd be clamouring for his head by now" ?
I certainly don't think we would, of course some impatient fans would want whoever was in charge out
The fact it's our very own SCP should never be seen as an excuse but he has earnt some leeway and deserves some breathing space .

You may be doubting whether you want our revival to be under SCP ??? well I'd hope you are on your own in that regard because I couldn't think of a better person to have our revival under.

In SCP we trust. He is going to turn this around. What a top Charlton man.

What a refreshing honest and solid figure to have in football.

Anyone who doesn't support Charlton and hears who I support always immediately says I really like your manager, a great bloke.

When he turns this around all you (who are quite rightly moaning) will go quiet.

Yes he is having a tricky stage in his management and he is making mistakes but who better to have at the helm of a ship in storms at sea than our very own SCP. He'll get us to sure, rest assured.

Oohaah, I've always wanted our revival to be under CP but what I doubt is whether that will happen now. Whoever comes in, and I do think there will be a change because, unless the performances improve drastically, I think the Board will be on the verge, I hope it's someone with Charlton connections, And that presents a problem because I just can't see who that will be. Bad times at Charlton at the moment and, like I've said previously, if the new man (if he comes in) turns it around we'll all be happy and suddenly the bad times won't be so bad after all. Crystal ball anyone?

You may be right but a bad run ends every managers job, by and large. I think he could have been sacked by now if our spiv owners could afford the pay off

Everything will be clearer by 5pm next Saturday. Two defeats and that will be the end. Two wins and the revival is on.

Could he ? yes. Should he ? No. It's that simple for me.

Too much man love for CP on here, in some people's eyes being a nice bloke counts more than tactical nous and player motivation. We have a serious lack of funds and a threadbare squad, but I seem to remember Lennie having the same a while back and achieving as have plenty of others for othr teams, CP is novice manager and needs to learn, but he cannot expect any nice bloke exemption from the tin tack. I hope he turns it round like he did last season, he needs to do it soon, as the season is early and string a few results together and the mood changes fast.
Denouncing someone crazy for criticising CP is not helpful and smacks of socialism/dictatorship.

Could he? Of course he can, football is a results driven business.

Will he? If we lose the next two home matches, the directors will panic. Why? Because they will find it even harder to sell a club in the relegation zone or in League One on the downward spiral again.

CP needs to pick 11 players who are prepared to "run through brick walls" against Forest. If he hasn't got 11 players capable of doing that, he's knackered. I watched Forest yesterday, they are beatable if you work as hard as them and have the right game-plan.

Fair enough the board have done alright getting us back in Championship etc.. but they need to go if we are to move forward rather than backwards. There is no point trying to stand still every year.

So, at whic point should he be sacked then?
  • Options

    100% support for cp

he's earned the right to have a bad run, in my eyes

Didn't he have that when he first took over?

In all seriousness, I said it on the matchday thread yesterday and I'll say it again, it is a results driven business and we haven't had a result for the last 3 games. If we don't get a result in the next 2 games he wil be gone. Rightly or wrongly that is, imo, a fact.

I drift between the two camps to be honest. I do get the, who could do better with the lack of investment and the crop of players that he had argument, but where I struggle is the fact that when we have been bad under Powell we have been f***ing awful - we have seen some absolute shockers under his leadership and at times the football has been painful.

I don't doubt that the same happened under Dowie, Pardew et al, but is seems like these types of perfomances crop up more often under Powell.

In all honestly, I don't know what they answer is and as I'm not paid to find the answer it doesn't keep me awake a night. All I do know is that I completely agree with Kevin Nolan when he says if it looks like a crisis it probably is. Without any investment this squad won't keep us up end of.

I'm probably way off the mark, but given the supposed frosty relationship between TJ and CP, I can't help but think if a new man came in, whether TJ might find some money to back him?

Yes, of course he could be. Pretty much any manager can be regardless of reputation and history.

Do the majority of fans want him to be sacked, of course not but as is said above, it is a results driven business and if we do not win one of the next two, he may go. Unfortunately reputations count for little nowadays.

There have been rumours that Powell and Jiminez are far from best pals, we lose the next two and Jiminez will not be worried about sacking Powell.

Expect a couple of sackings this week, Freedman, Flitcroft and Jones in our league are on thin ice, Weir and O'Driscoll in League 1 and even Jol in the Prem could be jobless.

Hope Powell is not one of them.

Question to the blinkered brigade, when would you sack CP? I am not saying now, but think he is in last chance saloon, maybe another half a dozen games, it would be harsh to judge him on the upcoming games tbh, but the nice bloke exemption surely cannot last forever?
