And guess what? It was yet another LBW. Don't these players know it's the bat you're meant to use and not the pads?
Either that or it's Mr Magoo and his brother officiating.
Talking about the use of the pads, I have just noticed that, out of a total of 277 scored in the match by Leics, no less than 27 have been leg byes (out of a total of 46 extras).
Good news. Fanny's stopped dancing. Play due to resume at 1.15.
Let's hope our batsmen aren't too worried about their average and get the final 23 runs in a couple of overs. They haven't been previously so why should they now!
Much as this was a much needed victory, it shouldn't disguise the fact that our medium/pace bowlers have been carrying the team this season.
To have only scored more than 300 runs in one game this season is shocking but I'm really not sure what the solution is. Only Northeast and Denly, to a lesser degree and more in the early past of the season, have shown any semblance of consistency and are averaging more than 25 in the County Championship.
Is it application or talent? Or a combination of the two?
Bell-Drummond started the season very well but, Aussie game apart, seems to have lost form in the 4 day game. Stevens' batting will inevitably be affected to some degree by the increased bowling demands upon him. Ball / Harmison / Cowdrey have not really had a proper run with the possible exception of Cowdrey. Billings too seems to have struggled with the bat compared to last season. Key I think has his mind in the Sky studio these days rather than the cricket wicket hence his decline.
I wonder whether there is an element of second season syndrome with Billings' batting or does he try to get on with it too much in the longer game rather than build an innings? Not seen enough myself to give a definitive opinion.
Let's not forget that Northeast last season was averaging low twenties and I amongst others, I freely admit, was questioning whether or not he was good enough. This season he has been excellent in all forms.
Confidence is paramount in sport and a team struggling at the foot of division two will lack it which could explain a lot. In 20:20 (up until now anyway) there has been little expectation given the lack of an overseas player so the youngsters could just go out and play pressure free. The success there suggests to me that the lads have talent.
I think the point about the longer game vs T20 is a valid one.
Judging from what I saw from yesterday's, a lot of the LBWs (on both sides) resulted from batsmen playing across their pads (rather than in the "V"). In the CC, against a swinging ball, both concentration and a sound technique are necessary. Whereas a quick 30, however made, is usually a decent score in T20.
Comments
Pads nowadays must have a really good "middle".
Coles gets match figures of 10-98
Surely......
12 off one McKay over
25 to win
Raining now though.

Denly 37*
Northeast 28*
Well done Kent

Instead it's the batting which isn't contributing, plus the spinners. Riley 8 wickets at 69.5, Tredwell 0 wickets in 2 matches
WELL DONE THE LADS !
Could this be the springboard for the rest of our season or the one and only shining light in a perpetually dark long narrow thing ?
