We have played 3 games at this World Cup, and when Jodie Taylor came on, we
had used all 21 outfield players ! Only the two reserve keepers haven't been used.
I'm beginning to understand Mark Sampson mind set ?

Hope Powell was slated for taking so many players with injuries at her last tournament, So Mark said before the 1st match that everyone was fit !
This was patently untrue, as Karen Carney and Jordon Nobbs plus at least 6 other players in the squad were recovering from different knocks and injuries.

At least it shows the squad is decent as 2 wins shows, plus the subs all embraced the team at half time as well as full time.

I love the togetherness in this squad, which wasn't always there under Hope Powell, Mark Samson is one of the 1st coaches i've seen in action,
who has a Plan A, B, and C, We need Carney and Bronze to be fit against Norway,
We are not the most skillful team here, but they give 100% every game.

  • 2-1 FT

The commentators made that sound a lot more dramatic than it was.

    Norway in Ottawa it is.

Jonathan Pearce makes everything sound dramatic.

In the first half we looked very fluent I thought. I don’t know if it is a British thing but we had to try and win this group, not just get through in second. It sets you up to go far. We now have a very difficult game that it is 40-60 against us progressing instead of an easy one. I would have taken risks in the second half to attack and go for a bigger score, but it takes courage to do that that cautious coaches don't have. But World Cup groups is one thing where you should think about the next game.

Well, there was a reason for that...

Well, there was a reason for that...
Sanderson dropped out for 4 years and Chapman had issues with child care,
I just thought that Powell had been in the job too long and got stale.
Or are we talking about more non football issues ?

  • So for all those making out like the standard is barely Sunday League and that pretty much any bloke could play better than the women in the tournament, how many goals like this gave you scored or seen scored in Sunday League?

Indeed we are. Certain faces fitted, others didn't.

No doubt some great goals but 'great goals' are scored at all levels of football. Doesn't make the overall standard any good.

  • Still enjoying this Tournament. Games showing fantastic skill level and fitness level. England have a good chance against Nirway, but I'm looking forward to Oz against Brazil
  • England look better when they go for games, I hope the coach doesn't pay Norway too much respect.
  • Would be interesting to see percentage of goals scored from outside the box in women's game compared to men's game.

I think the best way to enjoy women's football - youth football etc... Is to watch it for what it is and not compare it to something else. I'm finding a lot of the games enjoyable. I don't like the very one sided affairs, but we should be past those now.

Personally, I find women's football more enjoyable than watching Spain play - even though I accept they are one of the best teams in the world.

I would agree with this post apart from the Spain thing. What absolutely confuses me is why anyone would want to watch Palace or Millwall.

I have watched Charlton Ladies and it was hard work (just my opinion, he says, immediately feeling defensive) but it was still Charlton nonetheless. I guess some would say watching Charlton Men can be hard work sometimes too.

Come on Gary, you can't have it both ways, the inference was earlier in this thread that there was nothing to see at the WWC that you can't see down your local park on a Sunday. If those goals were scored at the men's World Cup we'd all be saying how fantastic they are, not trying to prove they weren't that great by pulling out a YouTube clip of some kid practising Ronaldo style free kicks that handly edits out the other 300 attempts he had that were way off target. Either those goals are hard to score, i.e. the way we treat them when JBG scores them, or they are not, in which case we should probably stop making such a fuss when JBG scores them as well.

That BBC clip shows a handful of excellent goals from the first round of a single tournament - probably a similar rate to which goals of that quality were scored in Brazil 2014 and probably more than S. Africa 2010. The clips you show, while having some undeniably spectacular goals in them (including some from Women) are pulling clips from the amateur game all over the world and even then the second one was 75% clips from the training ground and a good number of the others were of games in facilities that suggest a standard a bit better than pub football.

  • Have it both ways???

The point people made was that the overall quality of women's football is not that much better than Sunday league (I actually think lower county level Saturday football). I see screamers like that every other week when I play, the same quality strikes that you see in the Premier league. It doesn't mean the standard of football is anywhere near as good though.

It's like saying I'be holed a few 20 foot putts so I should be on the pro tour.
  • Only twenty, I sunk my balls in to a forty the other night twice
  • Great achievement to the Matildas.
To beat Brazil at Football who have the top female footballer in the World and were one of the favourites is awesome.
1st Aussie side ever to get to a quarter final of a world cup at football.
The power house Germans meeting the French Flair in the quarters seems too early, as they both won their groups.
If England can beat Norway in the last 16 tonight, they would meet Canada in the quarters, they will never have a better chance of going deep into a World cup.

Watch and supports the English girls, or go and watch paint dry.

    Come on England.

  • Yes, it has worked out good for England. Ok , they face a harder task to get through than South Korea would have been, but have an easier and doable job in the quarters if they do.

  • I liked the goal kick bit best
  • ha - very good.
  • Excellent.
  • Mark Sampson has made 4 changes again.
He's very consistence in using the whole squad.
if this works the guy is a Genius.
If it doesn't he should stick to a winning team.
Will he attack, will he defend ?
    This game is 50/50.
  • Relying on updates on here as not allowed it on the telly box as we're watching true detective
  • I didn't rate Rafferty that highly, but he will know what she can do better than me.
  • All Norway at the moment :-(
  • The England midfield are playing like Charlton used to before Cousins moved into the centre.

    Parting like the white sea.
  • These Norweigen sluts are all over us
