  • I think I remember snow stopped play in Durham a few season ago, that may have even been in June!

lets hope we get some play today.

Just noticed Richard Illingworth ex Worcestershire is umpire for Kent game.

Is that usual to umpire one of your old teams?

Not unusual and never been seen as an issue particularly although Mark Benson apparently requested not to umpire Kent matches when he umpired.
We also shouldn't forget the old days of Test cricket when both Umpires were from the home country.

Mike Gatting was particularly gutted when they changed it to neutral Umpires.

No play today either. What's the chances of a manufactured one innings a side start to the season?
  • Ben Duckett aged 21 and a former England U19 player, is currently 233 not out off 310 balls in just over seven hours at the crease for Northants against Sussex. A potential future England opener.

Where was he born? Farnborough, Kent :-(
  • I'm guessing a draw away to Worcestershire isn't a bad result.
  • Bloody hell, that slurrey mob above us again on here.......

Mods, is it possible to organise something to make sure their thread never is above ours please ?
  • Worcs fan here. Had been really hoping for a crack at you lot; alas, one cannot have it all.
  • Looks like there will be no play today either... That ground really isn't fit to host cricket during April
  • But it's so picturesque
  • I saw a picture of the outfield yesterday, would be surprised to see any play at New Road in April.

A nice cathedral, but I doubt the Kent lads needs 3 days to explore it!

It's not as if the weather these last few weeks has been extreme. Some rain, a bit cold, but hardly unusual for April. I don't remember New Road having these problems when Hick was destroying opposition bowling attacks
  • Ha ha, I agree, very picturesque.
  • Inspection at 12.30
  • No play today either - might as well pack up and go home.
  • Is there anything to stop them playing tomorrow and bowling up dollies so that each team can get bonus batting points then declare ?
  • The sparkling integrity of WCCC
  • At least Worcs have a hotel in the ground so it's not far for the players to trek between the changing room and their bed.
  • Inspection at 12!

Why???? If you can't start at the normal time, then clearly the outfield is in a poor state, what are they expecting to go, start play at 1 after an early lunch?

There is a certain irony that the likes of Cowdrey, Ball and Treders have been getting some much needed match practice playing for a 2nd X1 made up with half another county's second string whilst our first team have been sitting around for four days playing cards and on their phones.

I see Ryan Davies made his debut for Somerset. Still a strange one, for him to leave for first-team cricket when Billings is likely to be absent for much of the season (IPL, England duties) and could even play as a batsman only.

His batting isn't strong enough at the moment to command a top six place so when Billings does come back (he won't be in the Test squad) he wouldn't be in the side. A small sample admittedly of nine first class and T20 innings gives him an average of under 8. His scores for the England U19s were 14, 15, 10, 8, 1, 0, 27 & 17*.

He's batting at 9 for Somerset but is guaranteed to be in the first team and will no doubt in time edge his way up the order.

Plus he was almost certainly offered a far better contract at Somerset.

I meant that Billings could play as a batsman only! Has Billings ever kept wicket for England, as they seem to treat him as a specialist T20/ODI batsman?

Why would Somerset offer such a good contract to a 19 year old keeper (who isn't that great with the bat) anyway? I can't think of too many keepers at that age playing as first choice.
  • Got tickets for the T20 game against Surrey today. Surprised how many tickets have already been sold. Friday night in mid July........bound to be rained off!

  • Nuffink to add.......
Just don't want slurrey above us.
  • Bobby Key has announced that he has retired from all forms of the game. Big shame, great bat, skipper and a top man. I am sure he will continue his tv work, shame he wont be playing for us anymore.

Good luck with your future Rob. Slightly strange timing, but not a great surprise, the real shock is that his double ton against the Windies was 12 years ago!
  • Whilst he hasn't said as much, the fact that we had Denly, D B-D, Latham & Dickson potentially opening and he has been in India for virtually all of the pre season with Sky, the writing was on the wall.

Great career and I'm sure he will continue to be a big influence on the county off the field as well as a success with Sky.

I read that he had a very late night session with Freddie and Harmy when he was not out over night that evening, they don't make 'em like that anymore.
