Just listened to the Bowyer interview. He made perfect sense and was very calm. I think we'll be ok 2nd half of the season because there are definite signs that the link play is improving. Just need a new centre-back and a striker...
I thought the same, good measured interview from him.
  • PWR and then I'm away from CL for a while. A specialist CH on the bench. A midfielder at centre half. A right back at left back. A left back in centre midfield. Seriously Bowyer wtf? We should be top, but because of his selections we're 6 points off the pace. What a joke.
  • Found it interesting that LB wasn't heaping praise on Maddison initially saying there were other things he needed to do but later said it was a great strike. Something up there
  • Like everyone else I want Bowyer to be a success at Charlton especially as he stood by us under the clowns.
But his ridiculous team selection and tactics are costing us dearly.
Not sure how much patience Mr.sandgaard has with Bowyer.
We shall find out soon enough.

Recent interview Sandgaard gave he said that he'll be happy with the play-offs.
At this stage so would I !!

If you look at the current table then Accrington, Sunderland & Ipswich all look good for the top 6 as well. I reckon there will be 9 or 10 teams vying for the top 6 places & will go down to the wire. We play all of them plus the ones I've named in our last 8 games. Wouldn't surprise me if we end up 7th or 8th this season.
  • We’re a proper finisher and pace in midfield away from being around the automatics, we lack a BWP or Taylor as we had in the last two successful seasons at this level. Squad feels like it’s on par with Parkinson play off team, unlike then, I think we can improve both in January, and not getting Nicky Forster on his zimmerframe
  • Maatson did ok in midfield but I can't see why you would move a decent attacking left back to the middle when you don't have a replacement for his position. Williams looked one of our better players, Curbs said so. Bowyer clearly can't see what he brings to the team.

Defence looked terrible. Not just defending, but in possession.

Knowing LB and our injury on arrival stats. Anybody joining in January will not play until Late March.

My 100% LB meter is heading south.....

We do. His name is Purrington. Unless he is injured or unwell, of course.
  • Take Pratley right out of the back 4 for goodness sake, put Oshilaja in. Take Watson out of the midfield and put him on the bench.
Put Pratley where Watson is in center mid.
Do not ever play Matthews at LB again!!!!
Aneke always on the bench, start with Smyth at least he has pace, start with Maddison, start Albie Morgan over JFC , lay hands on Doughty,Famewo and Innis in the name of Jesus so that they get healed and back into the starting 11, slap Bowyer around a bit and get him to start playing attacking football, and get another silver Range Rover to auction is the least the club can do after having to sit through that load guff!!!

That's not what I heard him say. He praised him for his general running and the goal itself.
  • We are one of the highest scoring teams in the division why is it that people think a new striker will help us so much?
  • Pratley at centre half, Matthews at left back, Maatsen in midfield? 3 players out of position, when there was no need. A disjointed and shabby performance, which could easily have been a defeat. C'mon Bow, sort it out ffs.

Not sure why Deji is on the bench and Prately is at centre back. Prately is missed in the centre of the park. Add in a right back at left back. Maatsen was ok at left centre midfield but the whole set up was a bit mystifying. The goals conceeded were soft and less likely to be given away if you have x2 actual centre backs playing together. It sets the team back straight away to have too many players playing out of position.

Still, Charlton were a bobble away from going 3-2 with Washington in a prime scoring position.  Maddison's goal was excellent to watch. I was pleased to see Paul Smyth back as Charlton will really benefit from a bit of pace.

A frustrating game to watch all in all. Charlton are in the top 6 with a transfer window coming up to hopefully fill in some of the holes. Hopefully, Lee Bowyer can get back to playing players in their best positions.
  • 'Move the ball quicker'

You've got a right back with no left foot, playing at left back!!
Precisely. He's hardly going to run down the wing & put in dangerous crosses. Exactly the same as Solly when he was put over there.
  • Can't believe Famewo and Innis are out for about another 7-8 weeks from injuries they picked up in training.
  • Frustrating. Slightly baffled why we don't play 3 at the back if you want Maatsen with more freedom to get forward from wing back, rather than having a RB playing at LB to move him into midfield

The formation didn't work, as we managed to both be unexceptional going forward, but also really vulnerable to a quick counter attack. While I moaned at Pratley for roaming out of position, I imagine that was partially due to the lack of midfield cover in front of him.

Equally we didn't get enough players in the box. Washington is someone who likes pulling wide, but when he does so unless you have a midfielder busting a gut to get in the box, there's nobody there. Which slightly begs the question as to what's gone wrong with Gilbey since his injury, as he didn't even come off the bench today.

Indeed we went backwards once we brought Bogle and Smyth on, the last 10 minutes were very disappointing, we were clinging on at the end. And Chuks is suspended for the next game...

Bowyer loves playing players out of position, remember Oshilaja at left back for pretty much all of the post-lockdown games last season? Crazy to have so many players playing in the “wrong” position when it’s not a necessity.

Would love to know where Purrington was today

He was dropped according to Benjy Nurik. Bows said he didnt do enough last week & wanted a more attacking bench.

Which to me is bollox if you don't have another left footed player to play there.

From now on I want to see:

    Amos
    Gunter - Pratley - Pearce - Maatsen
    Watson
    Morgan - Williams
    Maddison
    Washington - Bogle

Aneke to come on at half time every time. Smyth can replace Washington. JFC can replace Williams. Not sure who replaces Maddison.

At the same time though its fair enough - We've played players out of position before and it hasnt hurt us

Matthews wasnt incompetent today, he gave away one stupid free kick which unfortunately cost us, otherwise was fine there, felt he did a lot better at LB than Pearce and Pratley at CB (another one of those was also out of position) - Neither Purrington / Maatsen (same as Matthews / Gunter) should think they can put in a weak performance or put in a slack amount on training, simply because they know that they'll get game time simply because the other player in their position is being played in another role or because they're out injured!!

Bowyer explained that after the Doncaster performance, that display he felt was down to players being arrogant enough to think that their positions arent under threat

I’d have Oshilaja in for Pratley and Pratley in for Watson, Watson on the bench. Would probably start Aneke instead of Bogle too.

If that's correct, that's just a terrible decision. He feels to me like an amateur cricket captain at the moment who constantly just follows the ball around the pitch and tries to move his players to plug the gaps.

Why not play Mattsen at left back and play Williams in that position if you thought he looked so good in training. It's where he played when we dominated AFC Wimbledon second half.

That way you can start Maddison or over the last two games had not done anything to deserve to be benched in my opinion.
Is Williams that good tracking back? - We're talking about a bloke who ducks out of challenges...
  • getting bored of watching the errors from LB now - don't take williams and aneke off - bring the maddisons and morgans on to help them unlock the door - so fruistrating - even when maddison's individual goal got Lb out of the shit, all he needed to do with 15 to go was swop washington for smyth and that would have won it - instead he did what he did and we lost all impetus - in my opinion, of course

How so? - Or do you think that because one player popped up in a position that someone else instantly would themselves?

That is exactly what I was thinking when it was clear Maatson was playing there.
