  • I like Stockley but he was ineffective yesterday.Crewe now becomes a must win game.I would start with Aneke and Washington up front( if fit) it would be nice to put Crewe on the back foot right from the start. Its still in our hands and even Blackpool have started to lose form and play Sunderland next.
  • I agree, their front players are probably the best in this league so better to avoid them. That could mitigate the defeat. But we should take the positives and no reason why we can't beat Crewe on Tuesday.

I thought the point of having Stockley was to get crosses in the box. So I don't understand why Millar breaks free down the left, in acres of space, cuts back on his right and doesn't whip it in to the back post. Every time he laid it off to someone else and the move broke down. Surely when Stockley is your frontman, you're trying to get into those positions to cross the ball.

Think we should've put far more into the mixer yesterday. This is what Sunderland do so well. They get an inch of space out wide and it goes in to Wyke.
This. It’s like Millar doesn’t actually trust his delivery. He’s great at beating the full back and Stockley must have been licking his lips at the whipped near post delivery (like the goal at Plymouth) but it never came. Millar checks back, Posh’s defence reset and we looked toothless. Even if Stockley doesn’t win the header, our midfield is set up to pick up any knockdown and JFC or Gilbey would have decent chances with second balls.
Millar has to check back because he is playing on the wrong side & can't cross with his left foot. We could have Beckham out there & he'd do the same. Imagine if Man U had played Giggs & Beckham on opposite wings for years because "they can always cut in & shoot/cross with their proper foot". They'd be boo'ed off the park.......and probably not won the treble.

    Madness.

Sometimes he will need a bit more help. If Nigel is saying that he couldn't give him that help earlier because of the fitness of the subs, it is a worry.

It’s not a worry. The two subs that Stockley could have used the help of had both just come back from injury

Not ideal with a striker like Stockley who needs crosses or a player like Beckham who’s strength was his crossing rather than pace, but plenty of teams play good football and win games with wide players cutting in.

Ideally the players in the system will be comfortable using either foot like DJ. Might be one reason why we don’t look to bring Millar back on loan next season.
  • We played well without really threatening.
Peterborough are going up and it's because them & Hull are the best two teams.
I thought they were always in control and could have stepped up a gear if necessary.
I said post match v Plymouth that I wouldn't be getting carried away and would judge us after Saturday.
My suspicions proved correct, we are 6th/7th best in this league, but if we make the play off you never know.

    Agree.
Unfortunately the line up that scored for fun against Plymouth were never going to get the space against a much improved and consistent Posh side who didn't have to hit top gear to garner the 3 points.

Saying everyone was fit before the game proved incorrect as Washington was only fit for several minutes and Aneke for 15.
Stockley is an honest player who has done well for Cafc with six headers but he never looks like scoring with his feet (even from the spot)

At the valley, we need Chuks and Conor to be involved; I appreciate they couldn't for long yesterday but for us to finish in the top 6 and not 7th we need them to be available.

The feeling that Hull city may emulate Burnley, Bournemouth, and Leeds etc and put on an exhibition against Charlton still looms large.

My fears in the preview about Peterborough came to fruition, I really don't want us to go into the Hull game needing 1 or 3 points to get into the play offs. We end up being the opposition to the Harlem Globetrotters !

Ps. We really did pass well around the pitch yesterday but our problems were obvious once we got to the penalty area.

Don't think the gulf was too big really. JCH was better than Stockley on the day, and we were less incisive overall in attack. Think our pressing game is coming together, we need to work on being clinical. I'm sure the team and manager will be itching to put things right on Tuesday.
JCH is better than Stockley on any day.
Stockley is decent but JCH is better.
You always want a Stockley though.

Talking about league 1 here.  A Stockley will make an average good, a good team very good and give a great team team a plan B.

He isn't a Taylor, Toney or a JCH.  He is a better "target man" than Eves or Magennis.  He is in the same league as Wyke.
Stockley is a very average player and certainly worse than Magennis.
Nah Magennis was proper shit for us. Stockley is good at what he does, but he makes us a worse team
Magennis wasn't shit for us - he was playing in a very poor team with little or no service yet some of our fans seemed to expect miracles. I think a lot of our fans have forgotten how bad we were in the two seasons he was with us.

Stockley for me is a more limited player and his career stats are hardly impressive.

We'll have to agree to disagree, I have no fond memories of Magennis' play whatsoever.

I missed one home game in one particular season:
The Thrashing of Bristol Rovers when Josh scored a hat trick and played like Super Clive.
Another honest but limited striker and it will be interesting to see if he is replaced in the Championship ?

When you say Stockley is in the same league as 30 goal Wyke you’re referring to the literal meaning , as in Sheffield United are in the same League as Man City (for now)
Stockley is good at what he does but he isn’t ever getting 30 goals with his head in a season ;-)
If Stockley played in that Sunderland team instead of Wyke I would expect he would get 20 plus goals easily.  Wyke hardly scored for 2 seasons before this one.

I'd like to have seen Chuks on earlier and Morgan finish the game.
So would Nige and the rest of us, but he and Washington were just coming back from injury and needed some
nurturing back in terms of minutes, so yes with hindsight great, but some things just ain't black and  white.

I would imagine Nigel will start with the same team, maybe Famewo in for Inniss and with Chuks and Conor on the bench again. He will need to replace DJ but presumably Maatsen comes in wide right. Adkins has shown he believes in consistency  of team selection and Tuesday won’t be any different.
  • Ref made statement match changing howler in first minute Stockers hauled to the floor by last defender Stroud shat his pants waved it away when free kick and red card was obligatory
More fundamental match ruination by poxy official
Stroud then didn’t have terrible game apart from picking on Gilbey throughout first half
Where is the sanction for these game meddling arseholes?

The ref was the least of our problems yesterday.
The two main reasons why we lost were.
Amos failing to save a 20 yard plus shot again.
    And missing a penalty.
  • Blackpool are paying for all that pressing that they did for a whole game. They did it to us and they must have done it to others. There legs must have gone by now.  Must have thought it was a good idea at the time.

We are such a bipolar fan base, last week we were planning our final against Sunderland and today we've blown it.
Not all of us mate. Some of us have said all along it's a Sunderland/charlton wembley date again
  • I am still confident we will do it.
  • Why did we let Stockley take the penalty. It just brought back memories of Ronnie linking up to take it at Oxford. After the Ipswich game people on here were saying he can’t shoot. When he was ready to take the penalty I did think it would be better if he somehow used his head to score. Strange but true.

  • Here's hoping that Nigel can put a team out on Tuesday that is set up to win. And which starts at pace. We have been slow off the blocks too many times and this time we paid the price.

Final third play is still not good enough particularly against good opposition and Peterborough were very good with a manager who had done his homework. Their two centre halves had Stockley's number from the start and they pressed up on our midfield well in the first half. Our crossing was back to being a pretty awful standard throughout.

In a game of fine margins, Nigel came up just a little short. Morgan's appearance didn't really add anything to the team and our two top scorers entered the game a little late. Giving the penalty taking duties to somebody who only scores with his head cost us two points.

However, we go again on Tuesday.
  • First game I’ve not watched since the Lincoln defeat earlier on in the season (played cricket) but no surprise in the result against a team that will get promoted .
All about Tuesday and our bouncebackability
I’m presuming by the lack of blaming the ref for the result he didn’t have a bad game .
Having only seen the awarded  penalty on the highlight reels that looked as lame as they get , if Peterborough had won the fixture with a penalty for a decision like that the floodgates of our fans teardrops would have opened or was it more of a penalty than the limited view I saw .
Don’t think we’ll make it , we just feel a bit lame (yes I know we got 6 the other day) and my Xg isn’t keen on us .

    48%      Play offs
    52%     7th-12th

Stroud ignored a foul at the start when Stockley was dragged down,by a Jason Pearce type hands around waist tackle.
He then fell for Gilbey's ridiculous dive for the penalty.
But he got most of the rest ok.

    Charlie Wyke:
25 goals in 39 matches for Sunderland.

    Josh Magennis:
18 goals in 39 matches for Hull.

    Joe Pigott:
18 goals in 41 matches for Wimbledon.

Not convinced that any of the 3 guys are Championship standard

Problem for Cafc, is the stats say Chuks Aneke has 13 goals in 34 matches but as we all know on minutes it's the equivalent of 13 in about 20 matches.

What I'm alluded  to is, guys that couldn't hack the Championship can look good in League 1 at times.

Even Will Griggs scored 4 goals for MK Dons yesterday.

Conor, Chuks and Jayden have to be fed and we need to play any 2 from 3 strikers; at least in matches left at the valley.

  • Peterborough are a better side than us and will deservedly be promoted, but I think our second half performance deserved a draw. We might not go up this season, but I’ll be betting on promotion next season; Adkins/Jackson/Euell is a winning combination.
I assume by comments made at the time that Jackie will join Bows in the summer and Adkins will bring in Crosby but hope it doesn’t happen.

You're probably right but I'd be starting Aneke for this one. Stockley has played a lot and done a lot of running for someone not typically a lone striker. Get it into Aneke's feet, bring Stockley on late on if a plan B is needed.
  • Always thought of this game as a free hit. If we had got anything from the match, it would have been a bonus. A draw would probably have been a fair result though it always looked like Posh could step up a gear.
Anyway, we now know exactly what we have to do and I'm sure there are plenty of twists and turns to come before the end of the season.

Agreed, if we’re going to cut inside and try to play neat triangles to open up shooting space, which is legitimate, then it’s Aneke over Stockley all day long.
  • A game I didn't expect us to win but looks like we gave it a go. I've got a horrible feeling we will come unstuck up at Accy then not get a result against Lincoln.
  • It’s great thinking you can afford to lose a game in the next 5, but when it’s the first one in the five, that cocks it up.

Amos (Or any other goalkeeper in the world) had no chance for that strike. It was low, hard and could not be stopped. Letting the deadliest striker in the league have a free shot from 20 yards was the main reason we conceded that goal.
