Good game today, strong finish to the season, in some ways unlucky to miss out. The way we’ve played in the last two I would have fancied us in the play offs. But injuries to key players and some bizarre decisions by Bowyer is what’s cost us.

When was the last time we had a normal pre- season - it must be a while.
  • Bowyer left way too late. Two points per game, as Adkins achieved, would have seen us top the table ahead of Hull.

Potentially in League One next season we have:

    Charlton
    Sunderland
    Blackpool
    Portsmouth
    Bolton
    Sheffield Wednesday
    Rotherham

    Tough season to get promoted.
Tough for them seeing as we'll be champions

Did Burton really give a debut to their back up keeper who'd been on loan to a non league team this season?

Yeah this bloke, although he's on loan from QPR and hasnt been on loan to Non-League this season, but started his career down there and had a few other loans to the likes of Welling

Although I’m not relishing the thought of 3rd division football next season I am confident that it will be our last season in this this tier.

A combination of our poor home form and letting Bowyer stay too long has ultimately cost us. Adkins has done well however and we must be one of the favourites next season, although as always it will be tough, with some big teams to deal with.

    Sunderland - never beat us
Blackpool - ok but could just be a flash in the pan season
    Portsmouth - not that good
Bolton - shit, only just made 3rd in league 2.
    Sheff Weds - basket case
Rotherham - will be tough but they're not exactly Man city.

    The league is ours.

A good result against a very good side and a win is a good way to end the season even though we missed out on play offs, which is a better position than I expected after the summer recruitment.

As I've said before, no one incident cost us any more than we benefitted by any one occurrence to that extent. It was that period of 22 points from 21 games, which included 12 matches against opposition in the bottom half of the table, that ultimately dictated our fate.

Adkins has impressed me - 19 points from 10 matches with just one defeat (scoring 18 and conceding 8) in a run that saw us play 4 of the top 5 bodes very well for the future and providing we make some decent signings I'm sure that we will be right up there next season.

it's all been said .. a summer of reorganisation, new player signings and many departures .. Nigel Adkins has the time and, we hope, the money to pick his own squad .. fans back in their droves come August and that will not be a day too soon

I don't care what anyone says this league is shite.
Now that the wage restrictions have been removed it's down to Sandgaard to show us how serious he really is.
Get it right and we will smash it.

New ownership and since 2021 have been in fantastic form.

Got some decent money behind them.

We deserved the win today, it's been a strong finish to the season, so well played the lads. Looking forward to a fresh start and fresh faces next season.

Happy with that, look at the way we set up compared to mid season, players knowing what they should be doing and putting in a shift. Wasn't considering a return for Maatsen or Millar before this game, but to be fair to the pair of them, they couldn't have done any more to change my mind. The form over the last 10 games has been very good, with an unbalanced and underwhelming squad. Get a handful of top quality additions and enjoy the ride.

Played well today albeit against a team that didn't need the result.

Something to build on next season,  we still have a club, we have, it seems, a good owner and an experienced manager.

And in a few months we'll be back at the Valley.

C'mon Sunderland, now win the play-offs

Didn't expect anything today but one thing that really is frustrating is our lack of action to remove Bowyer, we would be in the playoffs if we didn't spend 2 months exercising Einstein's definition of insanity.
    Absolutely this

We won the game, couldn't do anymore, so thats a positive. We have an owner now with clear ambition and is willing to invest. We have a newish manager who has just said on Charlton TV that, as the Hull players celebrated their promotion, "that'll be us next year, how positive is that!!
Next season we will have a NA squad, Millar sounds he would like to come back, Stockley seems nailed on to sign for us. Its time to sit-back, as supporters, enjoy the 8 weeks or so before pre-season starts, so lets see what squad we have, but for now its time to chill.
    Cheers everyone, onto next season.

The BBC thread said he fumbled a weak freekick into his own goal and was chipped from outside the box for another.

We ended the season strongly under NA. Every confidence we will get promoted next season with a much stronger squad. We've got our club back! COYRs!!

We did well today against a very good side.

Much preferred the team when Shinnie replaced Watson.

Hope we get  a really decent centre mid or two in for next season and get Aneke playing regularly.

A good finish to a crap season. So many factors went into us coming up short, but the damage was done in the summer, thanks to ESI, and mid-season, with injuries being a big factor there. Bowyer got an awful lot of flack on here but our form was moving in the right direction by the time he left. Impossible to know what he would have achieved if he had stayed, but what we can say is Adkins kept us on that upward trajectory and has overall done well since he came in. Results in the final third of the season were very good, and I feel like we have been slowly developing a pattern of play and playing with more positivity. We are short of a touch of quality in two or three key positions, but we do also have a few good players who are increasingly finding their feet.

A big transfer window coming up, but we finally have an owner with money to spend and a willingness to do so, a settled and experienced manager, and a well staffed and resourced recruitment team. The building blocks are in place, the stress and drama of last summer is behind us, and the players who are still here next season can carry the confidence of a good finish to the season into the the close season. With fans back in the stadium, there should be no excuses next season. That's not to say we should abandon all patience, or that there are any guarantees, but we'll definitely have the best shot of a really good season we have had for decade.

So an unsatisfying season, but massive reasons for optimism. A very welcome change from the sight feeling of dread of the last 2 or 3 pre-seasons of high turnover, late deals, and stingy budgets.
