Well, unpacking things is a tricky business these days. You can cut your finger on a sharp piece of cardboard..or the whole thing can blow up in your face
So I'll just offer some thoughts on one general point made by @Grapevine49
"What a player earns is P&C and none of your business."
On the face of it that should be uncontestable and certainly I agree it should not be used in the public domain by an agent conducting negotiations.
However, I don't think that this should be expanded to criticise fans who take an interest in the question of what players are paid.
It is true that nobody ever discussed whether Flanagan was paid more than Killer or Carl Leaburn more than Garry Nelson. But since those times two things happened to change the face of English and European football. One was IMO an unmitigated and avoidable disaster, the decision in 1991 to let the Premier League spin off as a separate commercial entity which decided how the Sky money would be shared out. The other was the Bosman ruling which was more inevitable and has made players' wages relatively more important to a club's finances compared with transfer fees.
It would be nice if football clubs were run like sensible corporate businesses. They generally are not, of course, and that was why clubs started to get relegated from the FAPL and run into financial disaster. (I've heard Kieran Maguire state that since the FAPL was formed, over 60 English clubs have entered administration). Fans of relegated clubs watched in horror as their clubs ran aground - and the main reason was, players had been signed who were expensive flops in the PL but nobody had thought fit to insert a relegation clause into their contracts. Incredibly this still seems to happen. It was at this point that fans started to realise that player wages were a big issue for their clubs - possibly an existential issue.
It's also not quite true that in any and every other branch of business an individual's salaries are 100% confidential. As I've said many times before (to the inexplicable rage of a few on here) a football club is in some ways similar to an ad agency. Its output depends on the performance of a few highly paid employees, who are a bit unpredictable but highly sought after by competitors. Nowadays most agencies price their contracts with a potential client based on the hours worked and the hourly rate of the team that will work on the business. Each team member's rate is broken out separately and the client's procurement team will pore over it and compare it with the other agencies' offers. They will not be able to say on those figures, this person earns x per year but they will have a good idea. And what they are looking for is inconsistency. It helps to ensure that a relatively unimportant team member is not paid more than one who is crucial.
I think Rodwell or Methven have referred to the way the wage budget for players is put together and i think this is now pretty standard in football. The market rate for some positions, especially striker, is much higher than for flank defenders. So they allocate a budget for each position. (See what I mean, quite similar to an ad agency). Fans just want to know that this has been done rationally and that the players recruited for that position are delivering as expected for the money allocated. It would not be too rigidly applied, and I'd imagine a premium would be added on for whoever is the first choice team captain.
And that's what has created the kerfuffle. It's highly regrettable and unfair that Tennai Watson has been named to illustrate a point, but the point itself has confirmed fans suspicions that we are still not managing the club's costs rationally despite all the grand talk of a new strategy. AFAIK a flank defender is one of the "cheapest" positions; maybe there is a premium for a "wing-back". Central midfield, plus a premium for a player made captain on the basis of his consistency, application and lead-by-example qualities would surely justify a bigger budget. If at the start of the season you'd asked fans who they think the highest earners are, the rational response would have been first Alfie, but most would then have put Dobbo second. Certainly not Corey, because there'd been questions over his physical availability as well as consistency - which he fixed himself, all credit to him. But almost from the first game, Curbs was banging on about the question of a new contract for Dobbo, doubtless because he'd spotted that there might be some inconsistency emerging in the wage allocation with all the new players coming in, which would have made Dobbo restless. But the club chose not to move on that early on, for reasons now widely pinned on Scott, and here we are, yet another chaotic January window. And the added tension of real danger of dropping to Division 4, a factual new low for every single one of us.
So whatever the rights and wrongs of discussion of players wages, it is not at all fair (and I'm not sure if this was Grapevine's intention) to criticise the fans for doing so.
Known / socialised with a few professional footballers over the years and, with the exception of maybe 2, they all seemed quit content on telling anyone who'll listen what they earned and where.
Well, it seems like someone at the club who actually understands football, has realised how important Dobson could be in a relegation fight and has stood their ground. Thank Christ.
Some of the comments not understanding the move to Hungary are quite amusing for me.
Videoton/Fehervar have been competing in Europe and getting results/competing in recent years against the likes of: Chelsea, Ludogrets, Malmo, AEK Athens, Partizan, PAOK, Bordeaux, Reims, Köln. Do you genuinely not understand how bad the likes of those clubs would smash us to fkn pieces on the pitch 😂 Play league 1 footie surrounded by players who look like they've won a competition and don't put in half the effort you do, or, join a team that competes to win their league and is willing to pay you a very fair wage in a nice country. What a decision.
Suspect it's the people with the same view that Rangers wasn't a big move at the time for Aribo. It's a brilliant move for Dobson at this stage of his career.
When it's all said and done, he will be able to say he played European football for one of the best teams in a different country, OR he could say, he scraped by, year after year for a club that's been mismanaged by absolute crooks in League 1.
In an ideal world, he would have stayed, and he would have been one of the main people in charge of a promotion challenging team. Unfortunately, getting a senior role at Charlton is the easiest job application in the world apparently, and his situation has been completely mismanaged.
Good luck to Dobson. I hope he can help keep us in this poxy league for another year, and we can wipe the stains from the club that currently have far too much say, next season. 👍🏻
For me it’s nothing to do with the perceived quality of league etc. I understand that a footballers career is very finite, and ultimately they need to try and make as much money, and play at the highest level they can, during the period they play.
If he was a single bloke, then maybe, but I just don’t understand why with a very young family, you would make such a move unless it was for an absolutely life changing wage - which I just don’t think it will be.
With 6 months left on his contract it just tells me that they know they won’t get an offer better than what Charlton offered from another English team.
Don't know what he earns here, but it's more than possible for him to be getting towards £1m with bonuses etc at the new club plus a decent signing on fee, Hungary has very low tax rates as well (flat 15% on income), so likely he'd need to earn at least 50% more in the UK to net the same.
Plus many people see working abroad for a period as an adventure and an opportunity.
I can’t speak for other people or George Dobson, but I don’t think in life when you have a baby, that you are looking for adventure at that point.
Just doing some research and the average salary seems to be about £8,500 a month. However Ferenacvos will pay significantly better and you have to expect George will be one of the higher earners in that team as well.
However there needs to be a massive increase to the average to make it anywhere near a million a year.

I too was a bit uncomfortable about the "X earns more than Y has been offered" conversations. Especially as we're taking as gospel what someone says X is on, and we don't know the full facts about their full contractual package, the bonuses, the signing on fees etc.
If a player joins on a free (Bosman), they usually get higher wages or a higher signing on fee than the equivalent player signed for a fee, because the club is saving on the transfer fee, but the cost to the club might still be lower. A player might accept lower wages in return for a longer contract.
Or a player might simply be overpaid, but that isn't justification to then overpay everyone else as well.

Airing dirty laundry in public like that is poor and unprofessional. Some conversations should remain between the club and player.
I would tend to agree with that although I think it's hard not to defend your relation when there are potential untruths being leaked or made up by the Club or fans especially in an age when it is so easy to target an individual via social media. The player is damned whatever he does.
Equally, I'm really not sure how a dispute with one player is going to affect a "team" when, with the exception of Thomas, all of Saturday's team combined have probably played less games in total for the Club than Dobson and with the possible exception of Thomas and May (and the kids who didn't start anyway) are unlikely to have any real affinity with the Club - or young supporters with them. If Dobson goes then I believe we will have just one player that has played more than 35 games for the Club and that is Aneke who hasn't kicked a ball for us in four months.
That is what happens when you create a revolving door policy of both Manager and players. There is no continuity. The exception was SCP's team when we did bring in a lot of players. The difference is that we still had a few, including SCP, that "got" the Club in situ, that SCP would have had a say in who he wanted and he had a pre-season to gel those players.
None of this is really Dobson's fault. He's just an excuse for us to vent our spleen.
Those quotes to me sound like another nail in the coffin for Andy Scott. He's basically all but said 'i overruled him'.

Yes, go and take in an NB1 game but not a big derby involving Ferencvaros. Maybe Ujpest against a club from outside the capital. And vlog that. Based on my 30 years of trying and failing to love the Czech league, I think you will find it an eye-opener.

Why not a big game out of interest?
My plans atm are a Celtic game (my mate at work is a season ticket holder), the Eternal Derby in Bucharest (my best mate lives in Bucharest and finally a Galatasary game (again two Turkish mates, one of which supports Gala).
Definitely quite keen to travel and do some vlogs along the way.
Well because I wanted you to see the standard and atmosphere of a typical HU game. I have never seen one, mind, but I am very confident that its much like a similar Czech game. I’ve had some fantastic Euro nights in Plzen watching Viktoria beating Napoli or Dinamo Zagreb and a few tasty ones when they play Sparta or Slavia. But when you go along to a typical league game, fuck me it is dire. The atmosphere, ( lack of) the old stadia, and on the pitch the schoolboy defending and often couldn’t give a fuck attitude .. well, you will miss the Valley and you will understand why this guy, an equally fervent supporter of Budapest Honved and Luton Town (when Nathan was in charge) tweeted this about the Dobbo move
And the thing is yes, Dobbo might get to play in Europe, but 90% of the time he’’ll be playing in front of 3,000 with players whose body language makes Scott Fraser look like Billy Bremner. (And those players will look 200% better if they play in a Europa League game the following Wednesday) .
If you have that experience you’ll understand why some of us have good reason (and not just ignorance or insularity) to wonder whether its a good career move for Dobbo, regardless of the money.

He knows his son's worth at this club and he if can see his son not being offered reasonable terms compared to a lot of the shit wearing the shirt then fair effing play.

Can I suggest another country on your bucket-list? Germany, and specifically the 2nd division. It would be at the other end of the experience spectrum. You could go and see Schalke. Having been relegated from the top flight last season they are now facing a Sunderland style double-drop, in 14th place and just 2 points above the dropzone.
I just checked their last home game,it was against Braunschweig so nothing special. The attendance was 61,215. And that is not a typing error.
Thats an example of why I wrote that if Dobbo was serious about playing in Europe, then top of his list should be 2-Bundesliga.

100% Whether you believe George Dobson will end up playing for Charlton if we god forbid, ever get into the Championship is one thing Whether you think that George Dobson should be starting for us next season for a promotion push (should we survive this year) is another thing
However.... if ANYBODY thinks that George Dobson over the last 3 years hasn't consistently been our best player and therefore is WORTHY of more money offered to the likes of T Watson and others who have come into this club and stunk the place up... then shame on you.
He DESERVES it, because he HAS earnt it. With his 100% commitment, day in, day out and the love that many, many fans have of him and that is because of how hard he has tried all day, everyday, when wearing the shirt and when not wearing the shirt.
it is the George Dobson's of this world that MAY stop CAFC being relegated to Division 3. To try and sell him off to Hungary in the middle of a relegation battle and banish him to the U23s is downright scandalous and the people making those decisions have no idea what effect that can have on the rest of the players and the supporting fanbase.

Not disputing this and I wouldn't expect anything less from a parent. My issue is the dad shouting his mouth of just before a big game to disrupt the fan base. That was tactical and out of order. There is no reason why he couldn't have leaked the info after the game. In fact, leaking bad news after a massive loss may have had a bigger impact.

Agreed, we have overpaid. There has never been a point where I thought T Watson was better than Dobbo. He could have created that point with his performances but he hasn't. I would be insulted if I was Dobbo and he was getting more than me.

I just checked their last home game,it was against Braunschweig so nothing special. The attendance was 61,215. And that is not a typing error.
Thats an example of why I wrote that if Dobbo was serious about playing in Europe, then top of his list should be 2-Bundesliga.
Whether you believe George Dobson will end up playing for Charlton if we god forbid, ever get into the Championship is one thing
Whether you think that George Dobson should be starting for us next season for a promotion push (should we survive this year) is another thing
However.... if ANYBODY thinks that George Dobson over the last 3 years hasn't consistently been our best player and therefore is WORTHY of more money offered to the likes of T Watson and others who have come into this club and stunk the place up... then shame on you.
He DESERVES it, because he HAS earnt it. With his 100% commitment, day in, day out and the love that many, many fans have of him and that is because of how hard he has tried all day, everyday, when wearing the shirt and when not wearing the shirt.
it is the George Dobson's of this world that MAY stop CAFC being relegated to Division 3. To try and sell him off to Hungary in the middle of a relegation battle and banish him to the U23s is downright scandalous and the people making those decisions have no idea what effect that can have on the rest of the players and the supporting fanbase.
By the way, I agree Dobbo is beyond important to us, he is imperative to our progress as a club...
We’ve overpaid some players on their first contract, clearly. That’s pissed off a better performing player in our squad, evidently. We’ve created problems for ourselves over multiple ownership groups.
