A performance where each player did their job, mainly because they knew what their job was. This is in stark contrast to the confusion under Adkins.
Jackson is a calm and assured figure on the touch line. He encourages and cajoles but doesn’t micro coach and clearly has trust in himself and his players.
Doncaster were awful, truly awful but we dominated in every part of the pitch and allowed them no time to get a foothold. It actually looked like the players were enjoying themselves and knew that they would win the game if they did the simple things.
Very enjoyable and what a difference in atmosphere to the Accrington game a few weeks ago.
Just brilliant - 3 pints of real ale in Crossbars before the game and even got a pint at halftime... i reckon that's the first time when a contender for man of the match is a keeper that lets in 4 !! amazing to see the Jacko effect - how the players are now putting in more effort and winning more 50/50's etc.... could easily have been double that scoreline... .next up Tuesday be interesting as Rotherham just trounced Sunderland...
Had to leave after 15 minutes, Mrs GA still hasn’t recovered from covid and she had an anxiety attack, or it could be the excitement of going to Morecambe away, so I missed the win. Can’t remember the last time I’ve seen us win in the flesh, as I missed the Crewe game.
Hope she's OK Guinness.
I don't suppose you would consider leaving 15 minutes into every game until we lose would you?
Can't ask more from JJ and the players than two wins and two clean sheets since NA went. Onwards and upwards hopefully.
It really is enjoyable to watch a team who actually know what they're doing.
As others have said, Dobson was superb and barely put a foot wrong. When we've conceded lots of goals previously, it was partly down to there being no protection for our defence. Dobson gives us that, even if Doncaster were powderpuff up front anyway (Joe Dodoo, I ask you).
Shout out for Gilbey and Washington too – and kudos to Steve Gallen for making them the only permanent signings we were allowed to make in summer 2020. Gilbey in particular oozes class, and I thought his shot on the turn was goal-bound only fir the keeper to pull off a good save.
Tougher tests to come, but the signs are really good. Well done Jackson, Euell and the boys.
Dobson quality again. Hard to see why he was frozen out before.
At the game and this was the main thing I came away with. He looked good...was everywhere with several well-timed tackles. Think he will only get better. We looked good and should have scored about 8 but Donny were really bad. Rotherham will be a true reflection of where we are I think
Does it make you wonder at the dynamics of the camp that Adkins had control (or not) over?
Same players/coaches, the only variables of course is their personalities and attitudes. I am not naive enough to think that highly trained athletes are on point 100% of the time, if you are not getting picked or you are injured maybe because you were brought back in too soon. Your teamate might be on a better deal than you, have a better motor, someone might be knocking off someone elses partner. All this makes up the group, without a football being kicked in anger.
Luck or lack off it can be a factor, wether you make that luck, or not yourselves. Adkins did not have an answer to all that lot, how could he really, will JJ and co?
I hope so, early days but that certain something you cannot put your finger on specifically has changed.

She was at home, so i walked out and the bloke on the door, couldn't believe I was leaving. What makes it worse is that I sit two along from @TelMc32. there's father and his grown up son between us. My brother used my ST on the first game of the season and asked them if they would mind moving up, they said no. I sat behind Tel at the last game and notice that the dad was sitting in my seat, leaving a gap between the two of them. As I entered my row, I saw that the dad was in my seat and asked if they minded to move up one and they answered no, so I said then I suggest you get out of my seat, I had about 10 seats empty to my left and could have moved up and thought fuck it. Only to leave after 15 mins.
“But Jackson’s the defensive coach. I don’t want him in control of the side!!!”
To be fair its what makes me laugh about all the "I told you so" comments at the moment.
We've all pretty much got a 50/50 chance of getting things right or wrong when we make predictions on here - Its not like anyone has shown themselves to be some absolute tactical genius
Coming back to the U.K. soon after just over 3 years away, I’d been looking forward to getting back to the Valley more for nostalgia reasons as its been so long and we’ve been crap so far this season.. But after today I’m so excited to get back. Plymouth should be the one.. it will be interesting to see how we’re looking come that game.
I feel like a proper fickle football fan, but a win just feels so goddamn good, bring on Rotherham!
There was clearly a large element of Doncaster allowing us to play, but what an excellent performance, all the same. Really, I think we just picked up where we left off after Sunderland, but Doncaster were a softer touch than Sunderland.
Two up front makes a huge difference - it supports Stockley who may be be more war hammer than rapier but he’s real weapon nonetheless when used well. There defence couldn’t handle him today. Dobson has fully justified those of us who wanted him in the team weeks ago but it’s also about the balance in the team and particularly the midfield now. With Stockley, Washington, Gilbey, Lee and even Leko/DJ, at the moment, you have players who can and will go and press high and with intensity, but with Dobson behind plus the back 3 and Purrington there is cover if the opposition manages to play round the press. I’ve always felt, however, that if you can get the press right, at this level, 90% of the time the opposition will not be able to deal with it. Defenders at this level don’t have the skill and touch to play passing football under real pressure. That goes for our’s too, although someone like Famewo can deal with it better than most.
With the ball the balance is good too, Dobson is more than just a spoiler, he can see a pass and carry the ball a bit, Gilbey is all action and can drive at teams with the ball, and Lee buzzes around with a knack for finding space. I really like Lee, he’s a little bit reminiscent of how Andy Reid used to play - not got the wand of a left foot but he wants the ball all the time and goes looking for it. He makes good decisions when he has it as well. Down the right we seem to have finally found some wingers who can actually cross (DJ swung in some peaches today) and on the left Purrington is doing a great job of getting into the box. It’s no wonder we are getting more chances because we are putting the ball into the right areas and getting bodies in there too. At times we have Washington, Stockley, Lee, Gilbey, and Purrington in there and during open play as well. I wouldn’t mind a fiver on Purrington making double figures this season if we keep this up. At the root of us being able to do that, though, is George “Insurance” Dobson, again, because when attacks have broken down he’s still been a barrier stopping the opposition getting straight onto the back three/four within two or three passes off the turnover.
It’d be churlish to grumble we didn’t score more so, really, in the last two games, there has been almost nothing to pick holes in.
Would be fantastic if they can keep it up again on Tuesday.
If ever there was a window into how much the players must’ve wanted Adkins gone, that was it.
Faultless for me. I know Doncaster were shocking, but it was the way we kept going forward looking for more goals that pleased me. And the simple things. Simple passes and working hard. These have been absent this season and although we were very good, it shows the chasm of disinterest the players had under NA.
Dobson was running the show. Completely mimicked what we had under Cullen. Great performance. Easily my MoM. Even players that I had been skeptical about like Gilbey look like they have a place the way Jackson set us up. Loved seeing Washington played up top with Stockley. He was one of the few I actively wanted to see back in the team from the squad of last season.
Looking forward to Tuesday now as Rotherham will be a proper test and I want to see if we can carry on this approach. It’s all you ask for as a fan. I am not 100% convinced we’re going to have enough to consistently win games, but I am 100% convinced the passion and heart is back and that’s all we ever want really.
I know it was only Doncaster and I know it’s only 2 games, but Jackson as boss feels right to me. The bloke has given so much for the club and endured a lot of crap years in between some good ones. His record as a player here and how he played suggests he’s intelligent, knows the game and is liked by the players. Stop the search for a new manager. We’ve found him
V interesting that Jacko said he’s only really had time to work with them on their shape when out of possession so far. The difference is remarkable. Even Gunter looked decent.
Rotherham likely to be a much tougher test. Will see whether DJ can cope defensively as today he was under no pressure from Donny at all.
I will admit that a month ago I didn't really think a change of manager would make much of a difference, as we had a squad full of average (at best) L1 players. However, Now I am sitting here eating a slice of tasty humble pie...............
When Bowyer Fucked off I said give the Job to JJ, he won his game game coming from behind etc but know we got WANKER instead. now we should JJ and JE running this team as they will get respect and will get 100% out of the players by making them play for the shirt. Tuesday will be tough and anyone who potentially could be disappointed if we don’t easily win is an idiot however a draw at worst would be nice. well Done JJ and JE and well done Charlton 👍👍👍👍👍

And let’s not forgot it’s only two games as well. Never understand the need for football fans to make sweeping comments based on a performance of a small set of performances when they’ve watched the game long enough to realise how quickly things can change.
Just enjoy the moment and the highs because boy there’s certainly been some lows recently.
Amazing what defending and attacking as a team does to a side. Solid performance, dare I say with plenty more to come. Dobson rightly getting good reviews, the team in general are looking good, but I think Gilbey’s willingness to get involved with the added quality is really impressive, haven’t had a favourite Charlton player for a fair few seasons, but he could push me to have one if he continues to get better. A very custard worthy performance indeed!!!

We also scored more goals (4) than we had corners (3).
Doncaster were abject but we made them look so poor because we were so good.
Donny had nil (0) corners so poor were they.
Dead cat bounce? We'll see v Rotherham.
Does every club such petty fans in their fanbase or is just us?
I feel like a proper fickle football fan, but a win just feels so goddamn good, bring on Rotherham!
Less said about the Surrey pony worriers the better...
a) Doncaster fans
b) police
The Donny fans are surprisingly content

And I massively enjoyed the win.
Dobson was everywhere and just edges MOM for me.
