Charlton travelled down to Fratton Park this evening before the proverbial January transfer window “slammed” shut. Our new signings were not available and young Mason Burstow didn’t travel as he’s subject to a potential transfer to west London.
For the first fifteen minutes the momentum shifted back and forth. Our back three likes to live on the edge and gifted Pompey some clear chances which they couldn’t finish. They looked devoid of confidence, as much as we often to. On twenty minutes we grew into the match, slicing through Portsmouth seemingly at will. Corey Blackett-Taylor’s mazey run, almost the length of the pitch, resulted in a rocket of a shot that just swerved the wrong side of the left post. Aneke then skidded a ball of the crossbar and Morgan had his own long range blast swerve outside the same upright. It wasn’t long until we broke through and Washington found the back of the net. Portsmouth looked even more devoid of ideas; it wasn’t until the 65 minute that they had a shot on target. Our second goal came from a sustained bout of pressure. They’re centre back headed the ball past his own keeper under pressure from Washington.
Portsmouth made some changes and managed to shift the momentum a little. They found the back of the net with twenty minutes remaining, putting us under a bit of pressure to stop the comeback.
We played the better football tonight, but with a bit more luck, Portsmouth could have found themselves on level terms. Thankfully, we did enough to see them off and take all three points.

Went a bit tits up when Inniss went off but a great performance overall and a fantastic result.10

Enjoyed that, handled the Portsmouth pressure well who didnt do enough with the ball all evening - Their goal literally came from a nothing incident - Sean Clare was outstanding and would be a travesty if he isn't MoTM
Based on recent performances away from home, and given the timing... I hope thats partly down to Terry Skiverton incoming and offering his experience, rather than just a bit of a lucky win away from home where we usually win anyway.13 -
Fully deserved win although a nervous last 20 minutes. The Pompey 21 was a whinging tart who should have got booked for pushing Aneke and then manhandled other Charlton players before he got booked for the Leko confrontation.
The players all put a shift in for the shirt tonight and looked a team playing for each other10 -
GET IN!!!!
CBT is a menace was lethal tonight.
Morgan I'm usually his biggest critic, but was superb showing positive signs.
Clare solid as was Innis.
I did think Gilbey was very poor tho.
But a great night overall

Well we certainly did our best to throw it away at the end but luckily, we turned out to be crap at that too and accidentally won...

Have to be happy with that.0

Great response to Hartlepool, throughly deserved. Sky will be disappointed to see Pompey lose.13

Mad what a bit of movement and intelligent running off the ball can do for you. Hats off to Sean Clare, outstanding tonight.18

Much better performance tonight. The only negative comment I will make is we were all at sea after the substitutions.
However, we did more than enough to have put this game well out of sight by then.
Proper team performance tonight, with nobody hiding or not putting in a shift. Well done to all and a special mention to the 1200 who made so much noise throughout.
I will now teleport back to Sydney from the Philippines...good coverage from Charlton TV3 -

Ridiculous record at Fratton Park
Shouldn’t have been so nervy at the end but a solid 3 points which we should back up on Saturday

Needlessly difficult at the end after a Mac howler but we played well and looked in control more and more as the game went on. Inniss and Famewo were solid, Matthews excellent and calm, involved in both goals with a brilliant cross and an excellent intelligent ball through to Clare. CBT scared them with his pace but was quite wasteful after getting his sighter on goal early on. Dobson was typically commanding and Albie had an excellent game getting stuck in and passing intelligently. Gilbey was everywhere first half but couldn't control the ball, then missing second half when we needed him involved. The strikers were quiet but did enough. Sean Clare though. Brilliant defensively, superb taking the ball forward and terrifying in attacking areas. Incredibly complete performance. All in all we profited from a tentative Pompey side, though as soon as they brought on one dangerous player in Curtis we started trembling. Need to make more of our control and the chances we create on the counter and start being a bit calmer at the back when we've got the game where we want it. All in all though a great day out. Less said about the offside the better. Chuks felt his hamstring so hopefully Stockley back soon, Fraser in and Burstow still with us when the window closes

Weird one that, for about 70 minutes of that game I think that is the strongest we have looked since the second half against Rotherham/when we played Ipswich yet we had the rub of the green for the two goals, and then looked all at sea at the end. Some fantastic performances across the team, Clare, Dobson and CBT in particular (maybe the black box does work). Have to say he may have gone under the radar that game, but I also thought Morgan was very good as well.Bloody hope Innis and Chuks are not injured.10

Morgan’s best game in about 2 years there6

Good performance. A bit jittery the last 10 minutes. Hope Aneke and Inniss are fit for Saturday and onwards .
Clare was outstanding2 -
Good all round performance, CBT had the best game I’ve seen for us, Dobson and Clare outstanding. Chuks doing his best to get sent off, ref was ok, Lino first half brilliant, not a bad performance by anyone really, very happy with that. Only downside was we should have scored at least a couple more.0

Morgan and Clare shared MOTM. Goalie made up for the goal with some calming collections.

Just happy to win a televised game to be honest. Also moves us away from the bottom four. That's our priority this year. Good performance overall.4

Someone just gave Gilbey 9 in Player Marks. This is why I squabble.11
