Meanwhile the advertising was nearly all Sport Direct, everywhere around the club, so that turnover was a lot lower than it could have been.
Mike Ashley took money put.of Newcastle, rather than investing.
Again, I don't blame Newcastle fans for wanting someone who'd put money in instead.
That looks like a very sensible way to run a football club. They were in the prem for 90% of that, the guy knows what he is doing
It's a very sensible way to make money, not sure it was that great for the club. They'd been in the top flight for 14 years before he took over, and played in Europe for 11 of those years.
Then they were relegated twice in the next decade - he didn't stablise a yoyo team or anything and suddenly turn them into PL regulars.
There's definitely worse owners, rather Ashley than an ESI type, for example, and sadly there are a lot of bad ones out there. I also think if Mike Ashley took over a League One club he would put money in to get promoted out of League One quickly (and if he took over a Championship club he'd look to back them to the PL quickly).
But I just think it's daft pretending he was brilliant for Newcastle and their fans just had delusions of grandeur, when mainly his tenure there was good for Mike Ashley.

Depends what he'd do in League 1. We're going mad at Sandgaard for thinking he can go anywhere close to break even. If Ashley came in and spent money with the idea of getting a lot more "sensible" in the Prem it could work, but if he comes in being tight from the get-go I'm not sure it's much different.
Its a moot point as i really dont think Ashley would be interested, but why would Mike Ashley do that? His approach to business is buying distressed assets and making them viable to sell at a profit. We aren't interesting for anyone that would be worthwhile for him to sell to unless we made the prem
Jesus. Are people really seeing Ashley as a reasonable replacement for Sandergaard?
There has been uproar about the treatment of staff, look at the treatment of Sports Direct Staff under Ashley's watch......
Newcastle fans despise him. We would simply be jumping from a sinking ship to a burning one.
But in Sandgaards case the ship is sinking because he himself holed it below the waterline. At least Ashley knows where the buckets are to put out any fire & knows the cost to fill them.
I had a call from the club today (and a subsequent email) from someone called Christos Apostolopoulos, "Commercial Sales Executive", a contact for season ticket holders. And trying to promote packages as my birthday is later on this month, for which I politely declined - just watching us play MK Dons on the 25th will be bad enough!

Is this someone new?
He phoned me as well same thing tried to flog me a birthday package. He also asked if there was anything he could do, I said get a new striker, he laughed but said he would pass it on lol.
yeah, I'd hate to be a Newcastle fan, mostly pissing about mid table in the Premier League, gates around 50k, much more fun flirting with relegation to League Two in front of gates of less than 10k.
It's levels though isn't it. They get 50k+ every home game and as a club who were predominantly in the PL for most of Ashley's tenure i don't think it's much for them to have expected a bigger transfer outlay. The guy was spending less than 1m a season net spend on transfers for a club who are one of the biggest in the country. Lo and behold, new owners come in, spend a bit of money and they're top 6.
It's like when people laugh at Man U fans and Arsenal (in recent years) moaning about how shit they are when they're slumming it all the way down in 7th place in the Premier league. But those clubs are 2 of the biggest in the world so of course the fans expect better. But obviously compared to clubs like us, Derby, Oldham, Rochdale or of course Bury, they've not had it anywhere near as bad.
But ultimately fans want better for their team so it's not really any different to us expecting better than the bottom half of league 2.

No, very fair point. Although as we know football is a different ball game. It's going to cost someone like Ashley a significant sum of money to take over Charlton and get them to the Prem. My point is that whilst what he did at Newcastle was indeed quite a sensible way to run things and it's not like he was a total failure, the scenario with a League 1 Charlton would require a completely different approach. Which is why you're probably right, Ashley wouldn't be interested.
There is now a takeover thread on ITTV could be worth monitoring as Reams does seem to have connections within and outside of Charlton in the football world;) Plus there is the Bexley dude who knows the tea lady, Kit man and any legal firm employees that might be representing any interested party!

It;s the Turks. Money is "in the bank". You read it there first .... about 5 years ago. It's just a slow burn.

I also had a guy from the club mumble something down the phone, I'll assume it's about my upcoming birthday then.

I'm only up for the Turks if the dude is related to the Sultan and turns up wearing primark Jean's and a shite Tshirt
I’m upset now, I got my 70th in a weeks time and nobody bothered to ring me, even gave up my season ticket after 23 years so that Christos could have the pleasure of talking to me to hear me to tell him that I’ve got other arrangements and he could shove his offer.

Haven't really been following this thread, but I've seen a couple of tweets suggesting Sandgaard is looking to sell & there are a couple of interested parties.
It's Twitter so I took it with a pinch of salt, but is there any truth in it?
