Any idiot can say, the way to the top is to play like Man City. Yes, if you play like Man City you will get to the top so the idiot is right. The problem is to do that you need eye watering amounts of money rather than words. That is where the idiot fails. What is the solution for that? Sandgaard is probably as big a fool when it comes to football as you can find.
  • He had the chance to do that. It isn't going to get easier losing £8m a year.

Can only see 4 possible ways for this to go -

    1. Sell up.
    2. Go tits up.
    3. Do nothing and hope performances change.
    4. Invest a relative small amount more, instill some confidence about the place and keep your fingers crossed (I'd call this the conventional way).

Again, I'm not saying he will, but I don't think it's completely out the question.

Don't know why but I still believe in Garner. Comes across as a breath of fresh air. He'll be a Championship manager in 5 years, with or without us

Really? I agree that Ben is a good concise talker but it's a results business and the words will fall on deaf ears if we stay below mid table.
Ben Garner wants to play football similar to 50% of the  coaches under 45 where you try to dictate the tempo with crisp short passing and then speed up with longer diagonal passes. At times in the first half we achieved this but when the ball was in or around the box our shooting was terrible.
'Garnerball' is a myth as you could call it 'Evattball'*. 6th in the table for Swindon though which told you that stats can be smoke and mirrors especially with possession if like yesterday Cafc can't hit a cow's arse with a banjo.

How can Ben Garner go on to bigger and better things if at the end of this season we are mid table at best ?  The situation with the forward and left footed LB is down to Sandgaard and why Gallen and Garner were so gutted on the close of window.

I understand how Ben is trying to play but the first ten games under JJ gave us 20 points after switching to 3-5-2 and that was never ideal but at least We had two forwards near to each other in the box; like Payne was to Stockley late on when we scored.

Strong mentality is so important in sport.

We trained well means nothing when you lose and make errors on match days.

*Other coaches names can go before ball !
  • I think Garner has shown he isn't inflexible formation-wise. But it's difficult to play two up front when you've only got two fit strikers, and three total. And he said as much himself.
  • I had a feeling of confidence before the game after Garner confirmed he had a full squad to choose from, apart from Aneke.

I was convinced he would put out his best 11 in their best positions. We played well in the first half but missed a bagfull of goals.

Second half Barnsley took control and we played badly. 5 subs were used which struck me as panic measures and made a mockery of Garner`s first choices. Confidence drained away and the team looked unbalanced and uncomfortable.

IMO,  Clare at left back made him 50% less effective compared to his contributions at right back. Egbo played well but we missed Clare`s usual contributions to the attack.

Both wingers desparately need to be coached to keep their shots down during training this week. They make great openings for the shot but woefully waste their chances.

With all (but one) players now available Garner should know his best 11 and we need to see that he has motivated them to bring out their best performances. No more excuses - injuries, not doing what they are producing on the training ground, forced to play out of position etc.

Time for him to produce and prove he is the manager/coach we need to turn this season around.

  • This defence is lacking a Jason Pearce for me, he wouldn’t have got us promoted this season no, but we’re leaky without that type of ‘Pearce/Pratley-like’ vocal character.

Lavelle, O’Connell, Inniss are all ok and aren’t kids but they don’t have the same knowledge and calibre of experience that Pearce had in the backline. I’m sure they’ve all worn the captains armband at some point but I can’t imagine them being leaders in our dressing room.

Also there’s no Championship quality at all about us apart from Rak-Sakyi who’s still learning and maybe Clare who has gone off the boil lately amongst the rest of them.

    Actually two more things

OConnel is absolute dog shit. One of worst CBs I have seen turn out for us.

Stockley 🤣🤣 anyone still want to argue with me that he will get nowhere near 20 goals.

still hope for us .. Plymouth beat Ipswich 2-1 today and go top of the table .. and WHO put 5 goals past them this season ?   :)
Trouble is Lincs you and I both know football don’t work like this. I was there yesterday and I’m normally glass half full but after the suicide squad masquerading as defenders and rugby be style conversions at the oppos goal, I’m fearing a bottom half finish this season 😔
and those five goals have unfortunately set a benchmark which this squad is incapable of matching on a consistent basis
  • look at this table, only Bristol Rovers have worse form than us over the last 5 games .. England League One Last 5 Games Form League Table (2022/2023 season) - predictZ.com .. admittedly we have played just one at home during this period
  • Wtf is Garnerball?

tapping/passing the ball about to and fro, up and down, not making any real progress whilst looking for openings which usually are not exploited because our players' passing is not accurate enough .. playing out from the back instead of lumping it up field ..

to be fair the passing was ok. It’s the final third that it falls over. That and the central defenders being useless.

Yes but early doors 588 I think was the announcement. Looked better than that  in amongst it 😉.

  • Post match Angst:

We are an established mid league 1 table team who will need 5 years to even get back to the Championship. That's sounds really pessimistic this morning but what a difference six games makes since we sunk Plymouth and HMS Piss the League set sail; my contribution was I hope we had enough Lifeboats even after the 5-1 win !

10 matches into this season and it's clear to sea we have hit the rocks. Captain Sandgaard is making sure the rock band plays on despite our black box radar being faulty.

The Pirate Southall is enjoying the distress and the sharks are circling. We press ganged some crew from the seaport of Swindon and other back waters where some are out of their depth and others are round a about the 1st team.

We are all at sea and awash with gloom as the ebb and flow will keep us in the deep end ; if chief engineer Garner can't get the engines and Sailors to work, Captain Sandgaard can wave goodbye as he encounters Poseidon; who can blow Cafc out of the water.

    Salty Sam's Sunday Soapbox.
Love your maritime metaphors but don't forget we are all in the same boat.
  • Let us not forget ... The team currently top of the table ...we spanked 5-1 a month ago. These players are clearly more than capable of winning matches against anyone at this level. Garner is capable of managing a team at this level. And TS is more than capable of running a football club. He saved this football club let us not forget. If he doesn't want to buy a forward or a left back ~ that is absolutely his right.

booing them throughout 90mins is not the answer. Let's get behind them MORE and vent after the 90.

Btw does anyone know ... If TS wanted to build a new valley (ergo not have to worry about Roland owning the current land) assuming the council gave permission for such a venture ~could he do that?  Or does Roland control that too?

If there is any demo needed it's for Roland to return our ground to us..I foresee TS selling up before May and then we could be in real trouble. As stated earlier, TS aside, noone wanted to buy this club sans the ground a few years ago.

Disagree that no-one could get these "awful" players promoted. There are many managers who could. I'd include Warnock and Curbs among that list.

  • This JS. Far to many great shooting positions were wasted. Shot after shot, from CBT, Rak Saki, Morgan, Stockley never tested their keeper. It was laughable that about 7-8 shots in the highlights never hit the target, not even close. Funny how the shots on target were 3-1 to Barnsley. Tells the story of our season. If you can't hit the target you can't score. Our team are bang average and as Curbs used to say, the league position over a season doesn't lie.

No new/better players are coming in January. If anything the squad will be weakened, with any offers being accepted. Sandguaard won't pour money in, in January, if promotion is unlikely, when that would involve paying extra wages that probably wouldn't affect the season outcome.

Sandgaard will continue to fail on the pitch for as long as he and his son dictate playing policy. We all laughed at the idea of Sandgaard junior or to use the American term Sandgaard the second, becoming manager, well apart from picking the players that's actually what's happening. If Garner wants out and hopefully a healthy pay off then I would suggest he attempts to change the system, get some wins under his belt and pisses Sandgaard the second right off. Neither senior or junior Sandgaard have actually played professional football, coached or managed in football but they seem to know everything there is about a pressing game and what's required and how successful it will be if we play that system, got some news for those two amateurs ..........have a look at the league position.
I'm not having this. The players signed were all Garners, with the exception of McGrandles (prob coz he was free) and the loan players, the Rak and Sess
  • Happy if we stay up and win some games. Hard to see what will change.
