The referee was terrible, but Garner has to cope better. It's not as if this was the first time he's got into trouble this way
I get what you're saying, but is it a big deal if a manager has to sit in the stands? Perhaps if he gets a them against us atmosphere going and inspires a fightback it might not be such a bad thing.
But we didn't come back because Garner wound the crowd up, we came back because of the 2 subs. We scored 2 minutes after they came on, after Chuks bulldozed 2 defenders and put in a great cross.
When was the last time we scored a last minute/stoppage time goal that counted for something? Obviously we got one at Accrington but conceded immediately after.
That's what used to be called a 'Grandstand finish'.
Only on the BBC.
No Golfie, back in the 60s and 70s when late fightbacks were something we specialised in ........ it's what we in the crowd at The Valley would call it; what the newspaper sports pages called it. 'Grandstand finish' was what it was known as.
I thought you would have known that. You're not just another Jonny-come-lately are you?

Saiid in the Match thread: ‘Aneke and CBT coming on in the 2nd half could be key, so long as we’re not a couple of goals down by then.’ Well they came on when we were a couple down, and it was a just couple of minutes before they combined to create our first.
From that moment on the atmosphere was electric. It shut the Tractor Boys up a bit, and the second silenced them completely.
Their third was a neat turn and shot but Lavelle could have done better.
Couple of points:: Thought Thomas had an excellent first half. He’s very good on the ball, and looked solid, apart from the shank into the crowd. Couldn’t see him so well in the second half from the Covered End, and missed his goal too. Great for him to score on his debut start though. Dobson and Fraser were immense all game. Rak Sakyi doesn’t get enough of the ball when playing centrally. Aneke makes us a much better side as soon as he comes on. He wins more in the air than you think he might and he’s so strong. Skilful too. I think he nutmegged the full back when setting up our first. Wollocott hasn’t got great reach when trying to stop shots. It’s almost like he’s 5’9” tall. If Egbo and O’Connell are out for any significant period we’re in trouble.

The team showed great spirit today. 👍
I actually thought against MK Dons when he moved into the middle, before the penalty and it all went wrong, he started to pick up pockets of space and receive the ball to feet well.
So I’d still be tempted to play him there against a team who sits back. But not against an Ipswich who press and shut off the passer before he can look to pick that pass.

I was referring to the BBC sports programme than was on Saturday afternoons for about 40 years, but probably before your time 😅😅
Garner not holding back in his criticism of the ref.
Good on him. The referees need holding to account. Absolutely shocking
I dont disagree, love his passion, but he does need to be careful. He is going to get a touchline ban but this may be extended as he was refusing to leave the pitch and may have it extended for coming onto the pitch after goal 4
I think what that second half showed is how much we just need to simplify things in the final third. Aneke obviously makes a huge difference but you can’t tell me Stockley, however poor his form has been, wouldn’t be more of a threat with a few more balls into the box like we put in second half. We have to find that way to transition from patient build up to being quicker and more direct once we’re within 40 yards of goal.
Totally agree with you about Stockley.
Whenever we've had a gameplan that's exploited his strengths, he's consistantly scored goals for us.
We don't do that anymore, and he's floundering bereft of confidence, because of it.
I feel for him Oggy. He’s in a real rut. He gets very poor service a lot of the time. When a ball is winnable in the air there’s often no one nearby to flick it to. On the deck his touch can be terrible, but when he does get it under control he actually turns and sprays the ball quite nicely. He’s actually trying to set the tone by moving the ball quickly and directly in the way that would help him. The trouble is we often then slow down again and any space that might have opened for him is gone.
That being said, I think there is something more at play. I think that injury last season has affected him. He was never fast, but he looks particularly slow across the ground now, and he doesn’t win as much in the air as he used to.
If we realistically can, I’d move him on in January and sign a replacement and a covering player. That is unlikely though. In the meantime, he’s the best we’ve got that can start games until Leaburn is fit. I don’t think anyone thinks he’s having a good season but he’s what we have so we need to try and tweak things to get what we can out of him. The constant digging out of him individually gets very tiresome. It’s not his fault the club didn’t do enough in the transfer window.
Very well put, mate.
We can all see Stockley is struggling. But there are reasons why which are not all his fault.
Like you say, those scapegoating and constantly digging him out yet totally ignoring the context, is tiring.

Was it Cullen away at West Brom?
Keith Peacock with a 92nd minute equaliser for 10-man Charlton v League leaders QPR. Result 3-3 ....... erm, in 1968.

Worried about the defence with O’Connell and Innis missing, and Wollacott seems to have caught Charltongoalkeeperitis whe it comes to stopping long shots, but we’ll park that for now.
What a game and great belief and determination to get back into it twice.
So great for Dobbo to be the one who got the winner.

I don't think so, Golfie. No doubt you're younger than me. Everybody else is!
Three things about celebrations after that final equaliser:
1) George’s celebration reminded me a bit of Johnny Robinson when he equalised against Man U - he really does love it here. 2) Joe Wollacott legged it upfield to join the celebrations - I don’t often like goalkeepers doing that, but enjoyed it this time. It showed it was a huge goal for the team. 3) Sessegnon and Rak-Sakyi celebrated with such joy it was like we’re the only team they’ve ever played for. Very much part of the team and good to see from loan players.
By the way, who else was up at Portman Road that time we drew 4-4 there? I'm sure the scoring went the same way then too ...... 0-2 down, back to 2-2, 2-4 down and then 4-4 right at the death. I'm sure we got a late penalty - Tommy Caton?
Or have I imagined all that?
You are correct, I was there and I remember it well.
I left on 95 minutes which is unusual for me but the entire team looked dead on their feet. And despite my polite apologies, also got a bollocking from one old git for exiting in the wrong direction, whatever the bloody hell that means.
Thought we were very unlucky to lose two of our best players to injury in the first half which was ruined as a spectacle anyway by an incompetent egomaniac of a match official. We never passed to Raki-Saki and never looked like scoring.
It has to be said that both Stockley and Kirk were particularly dreadful and for the umpteenth game running, neither placed a shot on or off target and never looked liked doing so. Stockley looked very slow and behind the play, was being bullied and won very little in the air. He needs a rest.
I honestly thought their goal on half time would kill us off and the second after a very soft free kick seemed to bury us completely. I thought it was game over at 50 mins to be honest but the Garner melt down and the subsequent removal of Stockley and Kirk changed it completely.
And then it didn't and then it did. Dramatic stuff and the boys showed real, grit, passion and team spirt. It was worth buying four tickets after all.

What a game, heard Keith Peacock telling people that is why you don’t leave before the end of a game.
