POST-MATCH THREAD: Derby v Charlton Athletic | Tues 27th Feb 2024

This from the marks thread:
Coventry 9 MoM That 2nd half performance was Dobsonesque... at his very best
Dobson can’t do what Conor did last night. You’ve got to go back to Cullen to see that mix of defensive and offensive play.12 -
A great second half, a euphoric win and just reward for the travelling faithful. The result puts some daylight between us and Port Vale and Cheltenham (notwithstanding their games in hand) and we're now only a point behind Shrewsbury, Burton and Cambridge, with a significantly better goal difference than all of them. Exeter and Wycombe are only 3 and 4 points ahead, although the 7 point gap to Wigan probably means that the giddy heights of 13th are likely to prove beyond us.
Nathan Jones has managed to instil some real structure, commitment and confidence into what was a massively underperforming and demoralised squad. In the best possible way, he has got the players right on their mettle and playing for their places and their futures. I don’t think there’s any danger of anyone taking their foot off the accelerator even once we reach safety. As the Curbs remarked on Charlton TV, it would have been inconceivable a month ago that Charlton would have started this game without Dobbo and May.
There's still much work to do and we know that things can change quickly in football; however, at last, I think we can start looking upwards. Compared to the other teams in the lower half of the table, we also have a big squad - too big, in fact - but it means that a few injuries are unlikely to destabilise us during the remaining 11 games. The one area of worry is up top but I'm sure that Jones will continue to use Chuks sparingly, as we know the man is not suited to long periods of play, less still to a sustained period of pressing from the front (fearsome as he is to opponents).
As for the game, there was some good early movement and passing from Derby but the game then became scrappy. Some poor and haphazard concessions of possession in midfield put us under unnecessary pressure at times, although we eased our way back into a low quality game before conceding a poor goal shortly before half time. The second half was a totally different story and we ran out deserved winners, with Gillesphey, Small, Coventry, Anderson and Kanu the pick of the bunch.
It will be a great atmosphere at Northampton on Saturday and I'm guessing we'll see an uptick in tickets sold for Cheltenham next Tuesday as well. Happy days.9 -
A word about Anderson’s strike. It would have been very easy to send that flying over the bar but he hit it perfectly which is a sign of a cool head on such young shoulders.
Along with Small and Kanu, we have some great youngsters making an impact.20 -

One even said and I quote "it felt like nothing short of GBH would get a Charlton in the book. Well, they certainly tried hard to live down to that standard, but the ref wasn't interested. His indifference to their thuggery certainly contributed to that second half performance because, unlike against Stevenage, the players were completely knocked out of their stride by these tactics."
which just shows why Nathen Jones says "I don't want to keep Derby at arms length, I want to knock Derby clean out!"10 -

Drop Dobson and look what happens! All you Andy Scott doubters take note….
The last two games have perfectly demonstrated why that solid defensive base is always the foundation for success. It was ugly, it was hard to watch, but, even though we conceded, we were still in touching distance. Crucially, that meant when their keeper had a rush of blood to the head and we got that bit of luck for Kanu’s shot to bounce back to Anderson (who still had plenty to do, btw), we were scoring goals to win three points, not rescue one.
Fair play to Nathan Jones for turning our defending around so dramatically. I really hope it lasts. Also, great managerial vision from him to pick Kanu, Anderson, and Small (who, let’s not forget, couldn’t get a game in bloody Scotland) as the players to turn us around. The three of them, all under 20 (!), have made a huge difference.
The warm inner glow of a well deserved and hard-fought win on the road. It’s a been a long time, but welcome home my old friend – please stick around for while.
Apart from the claim about Andy Scott and Dobson. Rewriting of history. A contributory factor of any poor form from Dobson, was likely unsettling by Andy Scott's management in the first place.Turn around is due to Nathan Jones. Watch the post video scenes. Incredible. Really happy with win, and the greater control Nathan Jones and Paul Hart has around football and playing affairs the better.11 -

Mind you, did you see the post-match interview with this "child"? He spoke with a maturity and measure way beyond his 19 years. Terry of course was bursting with enthusiasm about the quality of his finish, but he just said "oh, well I just caught it well, it's a basic skill" and i thought, "blimey, kid, I can't wait to see some of the more advanced skills you're obviously working hard on"
Terry's most often used phrase in commentary last night was "superb work by Daniel Kanu"; in the last 10 minutes they wondered if he needed to be subbed and he answered them by roaring past his defender in the channel for the umpteenth time and winning us a precious time-wasting corner.
The one thing that hasn't been mentioned though, is Alfie May, the forgotten man, probably averaging about 4 hours disturbed sleep a night, who came on and slotted into a number 10 role and then had to convert a penalty. I could hardly bear to watch, as missing that could have had huge consequences for the season. No worries, low and hard into the left corner. No keeper in the world had a chance with that.
Still smiling...
Stating the obvious to Addicks, THREE ex Academy players were on the pitch for every minute of the match last night.
TWO are teenagers.
The THIRD proudly wore the captain's armband.
All three gave their all, ran their socks off & the wide smiles on their faces at the final whistle was a sight to behold.
Like his 19 year old team mate a week or so ago, the "child" showed us how mature and committed he is to this famous old football club when interviewed post match.
So, what's the common denominator ?
Clearly something special has been added to their existing skills, pride in "the shirt" and their composure both on & off the pitch.
Stand up, Nathan Jones.
But, if questioned about their journey to the exalted heights of EFL football , I am 100% certain that another name would be first on their lips.
Lest we forget.....

What I have noticed from the celebration videos from after the game last night is how all the players who did not play or have not been playing much seemed to be buzzing. Jones seems to have got them to all buy into what he is looking to do, and they all seem to be in it together.

meanwhile, in Székesfehérvár...
I wonder how Fehérvár Life has taken the news that they've signed a pre-contract with an English player who can't even hold down his place in a 3rd division team battling relegation....
and for balance, I'll admit I was crapping myself just seeing CBT's name on the Derby team-sheet. One fairly harmless cross was all he had to show for his supposedly match-changing cameo. His team-mates didn't seem much interested in giving him the ball either.
Funny old game...

Jones was very brave last night. Not just going for a front 3 last night when we were behind, but keeping them on for the rest of the game when we went ahead.
I'm sure everyone in the ground expected Dobson to come on in place of Kanu, and go defensive for the last 10 minutes, but instead he kept the attacking threat on the pitch.10 - Sponsored links:

Just had the pleasure of watching BBC East Midlands today on Beeb 1. They interviewed County supporters before the game and how they are going up, then showed the goals, then didn't have too much to say, except 'relegation Charlton celebrated hard at the end of the game" and "are Derby good enough to go up"
Sat here with a huge smile on my face as the local press surrounded Warne!! Lovely Jubbly!!!7 -

Points deduction for Reading
1-0 down 1-2 up and win at Derby …
All other results go our way with Stockley grabbing to late goals to earn a draw at Port Vale.
Most of us couldn’t see that happening.0 -
Saw my 7 year old Grandson today. His exact words ‘ how the hell did Charlton manage to win at Derby ? You need to get me a ticket for the next match ‘ I should add that he is currently into Palace because of his school mates. I always threaten to burn his Palace shirt when he visits. I’ll convert him yet. He’s already been to a couple of games and seen a win & a draw so thinks it’s an agony free zone ! I will make him suffer like the rest of us eventually ! 😁19

Second half we stepped up our endeavour and got the win of which I am very glad.
But the skill levels were low on the whole.10 -
Who on earth are those scummy kids giving abuse to Alfie May celebrating his goal? It’s not as if he was taking the piss.
The parents should be ashamed.0 -

Agree the 1st half was poor BUT:
You don't think the pass from Coventry for Kanu to run on to when he was brought down was skillful ?
You don't think that Coventry closing down and getting his foot in is anything to do will skill ?
You don't think that giving your all against the team 2nd in the table which Conor Coventry did is worthy of more than 5.
No skill involved in Aneke receiving the ball and giving a good weighted pass to Kanu who hit a good shot which was saved and Anderson showed amazing skill to keep that shot under the bar ?
Lots of skill shown on a terrible pitch in the 2nd half but just head tennis in the 1st.
Reg had a good game as well but I appreciate you mark as you see and you saw a different game to me as you thought the two lads were 5's.
As I have said on many occasions a win will always mean players gain higher marks as fans are in a better mood as opposed to the normal this season; plus winning at Derby for the first time in 25 years.
We all voted the two Ipswich lads as our bottom two.
I honestly thought you fell asleep at HT so apologies for that assumption.
