A great second half, a euphoric win and just reward for the travelling faithful. The result puts some daylight between us and Port Vale and Cheltenham (notwithstanding their games in hand) and we're now only a point behind Shrewsbury, Burton and Cambridge, with a significantly better goal difference than all of them. Exeter and Wycombe are only 3 and 4 points ahead, although the 7 point gap to Wigan probably means that the giddy heights of 13th are likely to prove beyond us.
Nathan Jones has managed to instil some real structure, commitment and confidence into what was a massively underperforming and demoralised squad. In the best possible way, he has got the players right on their mettle and playing for their places and their futures. I don’t think there’s any danger of anyone taking their foot off the accelerator even once we reach safety. As the Curbs remarked on Charlton TV, it would have been inconceivable a month ago that Charlton would have started this game without Dobbo and May.
There's still much work to do and we know that things can change quickly in football; however, at last, I think we can start looking upwards. Compared to the other teams in the lower half of the table, we also have a big squad - too big, in fact - but it means that a few injuries are unlikely to destabilise us during the remaining 11 games. The one area of worry is up top but I'm sure that Jones will continue to use Chuks sparingly, as we know the man is not suited to long periods of play, less still to a sustained period of pressing from the front (fearsome as he is to opponents).
As for the game, there was some good early movement and passing from Derby but the game then became scrappy. Some poor and haphazard concessions of possession in midfield put us under unnecessary pressure at times, although we eased our way back into a low quality game before conceding a poor goal shortly before half time. The second half was a totally different story and we ran out deserved winners, with Gillesphey, Small, Coventry, Anderson and Kanu the pick of the bunch.
It will be a great atmosphere at Northampton on Saturday and I'm guessing we'll see an uptick in tickets sold for Cheltenham next Tuesday as well. Happy days.
A word about Anderson’s strike. It would have been very easy to send that flying over the bar but he hit it perfectly which is a sign of a cool head on such young shoulders.
Along with Small and Kanu, we have some great youngsters making an impact.
Not read it said but for once wasn’t it nice to have a competent referee.
tell that to the Derby fans. On their forum they thought he was hopeless.
One even said and I quote "it felt like nothing short of GBH would get a Charlton in the book. Well, they certainly tried hard to live down to that standard, but the ref wasn't interested. His indifference to their thuggery certainly contributed to that second half performance because, unlike against Stevenage, the players were completely knocked out of their stride by these tactics."
which just shows why Nathen Jones says "I don't want to keep Derby at arms length, I want to knock Derby clean out!"
Drop Dobson and look what happens! All you Andy Scott
doubters take note….
The last two games have perfectly demonstrated why that
solid defensive base is always the foundation for success. It was ugly,
it was hard to watch, but, even though we conceded, we were still in touching distance.
Crucially, that meant when their keeper had a rush of blood to the head and we
got that bit of luck for Kanu’s shot to bounce back to Anderson (who still had plenty
to do, btw), we were scoring goals to win three points, not rescue one.
Fair play to Nathan Jones for turning our defending around
so dramatically. I really hope it lasts. Also, great managerial vision from him to pick
Kanu, Anderson, and Small (who, let’s not forget, couldn’t get a game in bloody
Scotland) as the players to turn us around. The three of them, all under 20 (!),
have made a huge difference.
The warm inner glow of a well deserved and hard-fought win
on the road. It’s a been a long time, but welcome home my old friend – please stick
around for while.
THIS, exactly, great post
Apart from the claim about Andy Scott and Dobson. Rewriting of history. A contributory factor of any poor form from Dobson, was likely unsettling by Andy Scott's management in the first place.
Turn around is due to Nathan Jones. Watch the post video scenes. Incredible. Really happy with win, and the greater control Nathan Jones and Paul Hart has around football and playing affairs the better.

People were moaning that we didn't replace our best player in January and it turns out our best player all along was a child we've convinced to chase after people like they murdered his cat
I went to bed with a smile, woke up with a smile, and this thread is one big smile - but nothing has made me smile more broadly than this.
Mind you, did you see the post-match interview with this "child"? He spoke with a maturity and measure way beyond his 19 years. Terry of course was bursting with enthusiasm about the quality of his finish, but he just said "oh, well I just caught it well, it's a basic skill" and i thought, "blimey, kid, I can't wait to see some of the more advanced skills you're obviously working hard on"
Terry's most often used phrase in commentary last night was "superb work by Daniel Kanu"; in the last 10 minutes they wondered if he needed to be subbed and he answered them by roaring past his defender in the channel for the umpteenth time and winning us a precious time-wasting corner.
The one thing that hasn't been mentioned though, is Alfie May, the forgotten man, probably averaging about 4 hours disturbed sleep a night, who came on and slotted into a number 10 role and then had to convert a penalty. I could hardly bear to watch, as missing that could have had huge consequences for the season. No worries, low and hard into the left corner. No keeper in the world had a chance with that.
Still smiling...
Love this post, PA.
Stating the obvious to Addicks, THREE ex Academy players were on the pitch for every minute of the match last night.
TWO are teenagers.
The THIRD proudly wore the captain's armband.
All three gave their all, ran their socks off & the wide smiles on their faces at the final whistle was a sight to behold.
Like his 19 year old team mate a week or so ago, the "child" showed us how mature and committed he is to this famous old football club when interviewed post match.
So, what's the common denominator ?
Clearly something special has been added to their existing skills, pride in "the shirt" and their composure both on & off the pitch.
Stand up, Nathan Jones.
But, if questioned about their journey to the exalted heights of EFL football , I am 100% certain that another name would be first on their lips.
Lest we forget.....
Steve Avory.
Plus Lucas Ness when he was called upon, and he stood up to the test.
A word about Anderson’s strike. It would have been very easy to send that flying over the bar but he hit it perfectly which is a sign of a cool head on such young shoulders.

Computing the rippling net was weird to mentally assimilate, yet afterwards Karoy shrugs and says it was an open goal.
Reluctantly, @msomerton, just wanted to check your score for Coventry in the payer marks thread wasn't a typo of some sort, as it's notably and significantly lower than everyone else's.. just curious.. i only followed the game via the match thread on here..

What I have noticed from the celebration videos from after the
game last night is how all the players who did not play or have not been
playing much seemed to be buzzing. Jones seems to have got them to all buy into
what he is looking to do, and they all seem to be in it together.
Only player I didn't spot celebrating was Dobson, but maybe the camera man didn't pick him up?
I wonder how Fehérvár Life has taken the news that they've signed a pre-contract with an English player who can't even hold down his place in a 3rd division team battling relegation....
and for balance, I'll admit I was crapping myself just seeing CBT's name on the Derby team-sheet. One fairly harmless cross was all he had to show for his supposedly match-changing cameo. His team-mates didn't seem much interested in giving him the ball either.

These are the marks of someone who watched the first half then heard later that Chuks came on and we won
Also I thought REG had his best game for us but that’s the problem with players marks some posters have a downer on certain players and always mark them low whereas others, no names (if the cap fits), have their favourites and always mark them high 😉.
The Ipswich boys were the only poor performers yesterday?
Looked like it was a game too early for Camara to be starting, Ladapo seemed fairly quiet. Think if either of them play on Saturday we'll see a better performance

Funny old game...
Think that was only his 3rd time in the squad and he’d only played one half before last night … not exactly getting their fans infused yet.
The way he grabs Connor Coventry in that full-time clip. Fuck me I’d run through walls for that man. We’ve got a diamond here
You can see Coventry is shocked initially & prob thinking "fucking hell, this guy is a nutter!"
Do you think he still would’ve signed if Nathan Jones had been the one to pop over and have a cup of tea? He’d probably headbutt his mum for putting too much sugar in his mug.
The goalkeeper challenge for the pen looked like a red card to me. Seen those given anywhere else on the pitch.
I don't think it was a red. The keeper made a massive mistake going for it. Kanu knew he had to beat him to the ball and get a touch, any touch, which he did. It was a 100% penalty, superbly bought by Kanu.
Jones was very brave last night. Not just going for a front 3 last night when we were behind, but keeping them on for the rest of the game when we went ahead.
I'm sure everyone in the ground expected Dobson to come on in place of Kanu, and go defensive for the last 10 minutes, but instead he kept the attacking threat on the pitch.

I thought he was a decent ref, he didn’t fall for their constant play acting. The one player Adams was awful trying everything to get players booked and play acting. Wasn’t impressed with them at all.
Just had the pleasure of watching BBC East Midlands today on Beeb 1. They interviewed County supporters before the game and how they are going up, then showed the goals, then didn't have too much to say, except 'relegation Charlton celebrated hard at the end of the game" and "are Derby good enough to go up" Sat here with a huge smile on my face as the local press surrounded Warne!! Lovely Jubbly!!!
As I said on match thread - when our 2nd went in (and what a strike) - I went mental - ran up and down my hallway like a maniac - my 2 dogs retreated upstairs in fright - that is how a proper CAFC team plays - fight, application, shape, desire etc etc
BUT most of all WE play football (well we try - it is Div 3) - Derby, hmmmm
You're posting again, have you finished in the bedroom already ?
Saw my 7 year old Grandson today. His exact words ‘ how the hell did Charlton manage to win at Derby ? You need to get me a ticket for the next match ‘ I should add that he is currently into Palace because of his school mates. I always threaten to burn his Palace shirt when he visits. I’ll convert him yet. He’s already been to a couple of games and seen a win & a draw so thinks it’s an agony free zone ! I will make him suffer like the rest of us eventually ! 😁

That is correct. Over all it was a shocking guy poor game of football from both teams and in the first half we were the worse team by a mile. Second half we stepped up our endeavour and got the win of which I am very glad. But the skill levels were low on the whole.

Agree the 1st half was poor BUT: You don't think the pass from Coventry for Kanu to run on to when he was brought down was skillful ? You don't think that Coventry closing down and getting his foot in is anything to do will skill ? You don't think that giving your all against the team 2nd in the table which Conor Coventry did is worthy of more than 5. No skill involved in Aneke receiving the ball and giving a good weighted pass to Kanu who hit a good shot which was saved and Anderson showed amazing skill to keep that shot under the bar ? Lots of skill shown on a terrible pitch in the 2nd half but just head tennis in the 1st.
Reg had a good game as well but I appreciate you mark as you see and you saw a different game to me as you thought the two lads were 5's.
As I have said on many occasions a win will always mean players gain higher marks as fans are in a better mood as opposed to the normal this season; plus winning at Derby for the first time in 25 years.
We all voted the two Ipswich lads as our bottom two.
I honestly thought you fell asleep at HT so apologies for that assumption.

Coventry 9 MoM That 2nd half performance was Dobsonesque... at his very best
Dobson can’t do what Conor did last night. You’ve got to go back to Cullen to see that mix of defensive and offensive play.
