POST-MATCH THREAD: Northampton Town vs Charlton Athletic | Saturday 2nd March 2024 - 3pm Kick-Off

The Addicks started brightly and didn’t relent throughout the first half, taking the lead in the fourth minute. The pressurising was effective and Charlton hardly allowed the home side out of their own half.

It wasn’t until the 80th minute that Northampton were allowed back in it when Isted was caught in possession and gifted them an equaliser. We had our chances to put the match out of sight but failed to take them. No doubt, weather conditions in the second half affected us in possession as much as they did Northampton in the first.

Failing to take all three points is massively disappointing given the position we had Northampton in. And that hurts us in the table. We were as high as fifteenth, before setting back down to eighteenth.

Disappointing to throw a win away and the opportunity for consecutive wins and clean sheets.

Northampton 1 Charlton 1

Over to you.

Scrappy game. Just hope that does not come back to haunt us.
  • Frustrating result given how little Northampton created.

But it’s another point closer to safety and I’d probably have taken a draw before the game.

Makes Tuesdays game massive now, unbelievable to throw a game like that. He had nothing to do all day then does that, drop him.
  • Worst opposition we have played against all season. Northampton were absolutely awful & there for the taking.

The only way they were ever going to score was if we done a Sunday League level mistake….and we delivered on that in style (as we have done so many times this season).

Would have settled for a draw before the game but not after watching the game. Two points dropped but another point away from the bottom four, beat Cheltenham and all is forgiven.

Funny game. We saw both evidence of the improvements NJ has made but also evidence of why we’re in a relegation scrap and why we’re far from out of the woods yet. Yet again, a terrible individual error undermines what was otherwise a pretty comfortable afternoon defensively. The forwards fed on scraps for a lot of the game but Alfie May also had two guilt edge chances and Ladapo somehow failed to connect with a cross in the six yard box with the goal gapping so I think overall more responsibility for the dropped points lies with the strikers than the defence, for a change.

Overall a point isn’t bad but a win would’ve probably made a point in midweek ok, but now there’s a bit more pressure to win. Pity. Hopefully this at least focuses a few minds again and discourages anyone to let the levels drop.

4 wins and 2 draws to go. Maybe 2 and 2 if we win on Tuesday.

As I said on the match thread. We were comfortable. Gifted it to them 😡

So frustrating. What on earth is isted thinking. However May and Ladapo had chances to bury that. Really annoyed me today. Win Tuesday all will be forgiven mind. Lose however then my heart rate will be back to max

Tuesday's game was always massive which is why avoiding defeat today, to maintain the confidence and momentum, was so important.

As it turned out today was going better than some of us could have hoped so, in the end, the result was a bit of a disappointment but looking at the bigger picture it's a good point and another small step to safety.

We'd have jumped above three other teams with the win. Still so tight. A point gained at a team that easily beat us not long ago. Can't keep a clean sheet. Big misses from Alfie and Ladapo cost us as much as Isted's howler.

For those that haven't seen it, a back pass to Isted, he side tapped it 5 yards to his right central and close to the edge of the box. Unfortunately a Cobbler was right there. As Isted scrambled to block the shot the ball is scuffed sideways by the player and another Cobbler can just roll the ball into an empty net with no defenders in sight.

Gutted with the result. Should have scored more than 1 and in classic Charlton fashion we gift the opposition a goal. Shocking from Isted.
  • Genuinely feels like a loss, certainly points dropped!

Don’t get the insistence to play out from the back, be it a goal kick or recycling a passage of play- it inevitably puts us under unwanted pressure and we seem to always fumble it and give away easy goals, we’ve been going it all season!!

we played alright, no real spark or magic but we didn’t seem to need it - but when you give away goals like that then it’s desperate to have it.

may did well to chase around and was unlucky not to score, kanu similar- but what the fuck does Ladapo bring to this side, because it’s certainly not physicality, nor is it Arial prescience and not even good feet - no real difference to having tedic up front!

Dobbo had a quiet game, and couldn’t seem to decide what his role was going to be today, Anderson good but shouldn’t be ‘unstoppable’ certainly when it comes to the last 10/15 mins

really disappointing result and a deflating one too, but a point is a positive (albeit a small one) and we go into some 6pointers being unbeaten.

really missed Aneke today, Jones back in the fold will be great too!

Loved the return of the “he fu**ing hates Millwall” chant for Theiry Small

Thought our three CBs all had brilliant games, we've got such strength in that area now

Thought Anderson had a poor game albeit he scored….a lot of misplaced passes…..also what was up with our players falling over all the time for gods sake put your long studs on

OK Isted gifted then a goal but also May missed two and Ladapo one very good chances, So dont just blame the goalie

A little bit too rudemental at times but we were on top and looked like the side who would score next and finish the game off.

Dobson was very tidy and him and Coventry put hard work in and put their foot in when needed with Coventry playing two or three very cutting passes.

Lapado is a lump, but the ball doesn't stick with him up front like it does with Kanu.

Chuks coming on instead of him would probably have meant 3 points.

Win Tuesday and Isted's mistake won't have been costly, but come on lad, just put your foot through the ball.

Back 3 was very very solid all day.

We just can’t help giving teams goals!! So frustrating, it was slow motion, just clear your lines but we move on. Would have been great to go into Tuesday with a result today but it is what it is.

Pretty good performance but all undone by a moment of total stupidity. Problem is our defence has always got that in them, so we really needed to take our chances. Subs offered nothing and we were lucky they were so wasteful after equalised

Could have, should have capitalised on several chances to build on an early lead but a stupid mistake by Harry Isted gifted them an undeserved equaliser. With that went the clean sheet and a still much needed win. Two points given away.
Our standards slipped from those shown in the recent games against the top 3. Lots for Nathan Jones to tackle with the squad but not much time before the important game at Cheltenham on Tuesday.

We must be on track to set a record for draws in a season

That was a clean sheet performance 100%. Such a shame it was ruined by a moment of lunacy

Won't get too caught up in this.
An absolute monumental effort to take points off the teams we have in the last few games or so.
I think that effort and graft finally caught up with us 30 mins into this game. At least we didn't lose.
    We go again

But is AMB any better. Shame because he has been decent until that mistake

Disappointing not to win that. In the end we suffered from having the initiative and not doing anything with it. Missed chances from a few players left us open to an equaliser. Shame that it came from an Isted mistake as he's made the whole defence feel much more assured since he came in and has played well. One mistake and you can already see people screeching how we need a new keeper which is pretty bleak to see from our fans. We should have been in a position where an error wouldn't have taken the win away from us but we didn't and it always felt like if we didn't score again we'd be punished. That's the next stage after adding some drive, determination and more security to our play, it's being clinical. We now go up against three teams who are going to be going hard for survival and we've seen that Fleetwood have no issue scoring at the moment. People can tantrum all they want about Isted making one mistake but it doesn't matter if we put prime Buffon in goal, if we can't take control of games and kill them off when we're in the ascendancy we're going to keep dropping points and risking relegation. Northampton were about as bad as I thought they'd be for a team with nothing to play for, we'll have to step our quality up against the relegation rivals

Yes Isted mucked up but our finishing was also well off.

The other results really did us well and there's more clubs now in the sticky stuff than before.

With Jones back Tuesday and hopefully Chucky on the bench what changes would you go for?

Cheltenham today didn't even have a shot on target....Tuesday, no question, has to be a win.

Yes, like most of us I'm a bit miffed but I never seriously thought we'd get 6 points from the last few games so we're in a better place but we must push on now.

If Cheltenham win on Tuesday, there’ll be four points between 14th and 21st.
