Joe Gomez (ed. ongoing progress)

CB spots really up for grabs with England, especially if Stones can’t stay fit.1

Klopp called him a lifesaver yesterday. Joe has stepped up at a time their title race could have crumbled. The Manager, Coaching staff and fans all acknowledge the quality and application shown.
I've been impressed with his ability to move into midfield effortlessly. But they key for me was, him getting full confidence in his own body again.7 -

He has been getting more games this season and injury free. Looking more consistent with each game.

Gomez is very underrated by both Liverpool fans and the wider footballing world. Was pivotal when they won the league in 19/20 and is having another fantastic season which sees them targeting a quadruple in February.
Did he ever get back into the England camp after the bust up with Sterling? Wonder if Southgate will still hold that against him. He's a great option consider how versatile is and how our LB position is weak considering injuries to Shaw and Chilwell this season3 -

There were quite a few Liverpool fans moaning about him back then, glad that Klopp stuck by him.2 -
Barring further injury I think Southgate would be mad to exclude Gomez. He's extremely versatile across the back line and I wouldn't mind betting he'd do well as a defensive midfielder.1

Joe Gomez should change his name to Jordan Henderson. He’d start every game for England then.4

He's ruptured his ACL on International duty, been victim of a scrap by Sterling, was boo'd by the fans with a very low IQ in that game, was dropped and never recalled.
Poor treatment but Joe cracks on with it. Many players would run for headlines about it's affect on their mental health. Partly why I'm very very bored of the whole narrative of him not having scored a goal in xxx games. Things like that start light heartedly but it has the potential to become a meme and unnecessary.7 -
When Liverpool last won the PL he was a mainstay. The next season he plays a lot of games they are top again and in all competitions.
Coincidence?2 -
Great to see he has got his confidence back and is back to his best. He did have a spell of a few torrid games early last season but this season has been excellent. So much so it is probably questionable where his best position actually is now.0

Will be interesting to see what happens when TAA and Robertson are fit. I think he might move to RB and TAA into midfield but Liverpools squad is stacked with midfielders. I just hope Gomez doesn’t get stuck on the bench0

Am glad to hear this from Klopp:
"Can I ask the people, as funny as it is... 'shoot'. Leave the boy alone, one day he will shoot, he will find the moment himself.
"If he shoots from 40 yards just because the people are calling then I will really get a bit angry but what a boy, what a game. Absolutely exceptional."

Ironically, it is the versatility and ability to play anywhere across the back four you refer to that makes him so valuable to Liverpool, in the same way as it was with Millner, but he ends up being perceived by some as the "master of none". That shouldn't be the case but there's no way I would say that he's a better left back than a fit and firing Robertson, for example. He does deserve the opportunity to become VVD's partner but that isn't going to happen all the time Konate is doing the job and Joe is needed to fill in where necessary. Equally, there have been occasions recently where TAA has been pushed into midfield and Joe is the ideal player to slot in at RB whereas Konate couldn't do that job.
Joe has now added CDM to his list of positions. That versatility and his form has had Klopp calling for him to be called up by England:“I am not standing here telling Gareth who he should pick,” Jürgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, said, “but you can get one player and have four positions covered. Wonderful.”
With squads for the European Championship finals this summer reduced to 23 names, having been 26-strong for the past two tournaments, versatility is a boon and Gomez’s knack of slipping seamlessly from position to position without a dip in standard makes him an attractive proposition.
This season, he has made 17 appearances at right back, 14 at left back, four at centre half and now two starts in the centre of midfield.
Klopp said last week that Gomez had “saved our lives 20 times” this season given the number of injuries that have left his squad depleted. That Klopp saw the potential in Gomez — the only player whose arrival at Anfield, in summer 2015, pre-dates that of his manager — to come into midfield speaks volumes of his natural talent.
“It’s just one of these stories. What a wonderful player he is and I am so happy he can show that again.”

Sky Sports are reporting that he's going to be recalled to the England squad, along with Butland and Toney for the next set of friendlies.18

Being brutally honest I don’t think he’s quite good enough to be playing in this current Liverpool team. I suspect he’s in danger of being sold when the new manager comes in. Good news for us I suppose.0

You don't think he's good enough as a first choice starter, or to be filling in 4 positions for a team that are currently top of the league, (with his performances being a huge factor while they were down to their 3rd choice LB)?13 -
His versatility can't be understated. Not many player could provide cover in 3/4 positions6

It is that versatility that will mean that we can take one less defenders to the Euros. I don't think England have anyone who can play all positions across the back four do we? In fact, how many have we ever had? Some like Walker or Shaw have played play at FB and at CB but I can't think of many who have played in both FB positions and at CB. The issue is usually that the traditional CB doesn't have the athleticism/speed to play at FB and the FB doesn't have the physical presence to play at CB. Joe is the footballing equivalent of Daley Thompson!
It's always been about confidence with Joe. There have been occasions when that's been severely lacking mainly due, one suspects, to his numerous injuries. He's destined to play 50 games this season and possibly the most of any Liverpool player. That will have done him the world of good.

He's effectively become their replacement for James Milner in terms of versatility and reliability. No mean feat.19

In my opinion the best player by a country mile to have come through our academy. Deserves all the success he gets.24

If Gomez was sold or an offer came in, I think he will only go down a notch, to Villa, or Newcastle, maybe Tottenham or Chelsea.
That would mean a fee of which we are due (I think) 25%.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
So what would a Gomez transfer fee be if he were to move to one of those clubs?
I say north of 30 million pounds.0 -
