The goalkeeper challenge for the pen looked like a red card to me. Seen those given anywhere else on the pitch.
I didnt think a Red Card could be given to the Goalkeeper, if the Referee awards a penalty... Isnt that the double jeopardy rule or something?

Outside the box the keeper gets a red card and Cafc get a free kick.
Inside the box since the last rule change, the keeper attempted to play the ball but the fast Kanu got there first so yellow card and Alfie May scores from the spot will the keeper confused.

Great outcome and we gained so much confidence from the equaliser and Derby wobbled.

How many points have we got this season with Aneke vs without. Unbelievable
Thought I might as well work it out, and I make it:

with Aneke: 18 points from 10 games
without: 19 points from 25 games

Playing devil’s advocate a bit as I do think we look generally improved under Jones, but you do wonder how much of a factor this is. Results improved under Apples too in the spell where he had Chuks available…
When you consider how many 'late' goals we have conceded without Chuks, the correlation between him present and points is clear to me.  Two reasons I think why

    1. Where we previously were hoofing the ball away from our goal and it returning rapidly, we now have someone who harries the defenders and it sticks for longer at the opponents end, reducing the amount of chances on our goal which leads to the 2nd point
    2. With a player like Chuks on the pitch, the opposing team must leave at least 2 defenders back just for him.  With Kanu still on the pitch make that 3 defenders at least.  Less opponents attacking our box.

With Miles also out, we had no physical presence up front which meant the opposition were free to roam forward more and have 'bodies' in our box, especially in the last 15-20 mins as our main strikers had to be withdrawn.

I just pray we remain intelligent on his usage (20-30 mins per game) as it is a winning combination clearly from the points tally stated above.

    Lest we forget:

    L Gillingham FA Cup
    L Reading EFL Trophy

    L Orient            1-0
    L Bristol R         2-1
    L Oxford           1-2
    D Port Vale       3-3 A
    L Posh              1-2
    L Burton            2-0
    L Northampton  2-3
    D Blackpool      1-1 A
    L Derby.            0-1

    D Lincoln         1-1 H
    D Bolton          3-3 A
    D Pompey       0-0 H
    W Derby          1-2
  • Port Vale - Burton - Cambridge are the three frustrating results from those games, as we really should have won them.

Northampton too, we should have got points, but Appleton put his desperation to keep his job, ahead of getting any points.

Having had time to sleep on this fantastic result, you can see what NJ has given to the team....huge spades of confidence, a structure they can play to and a great team ethic! I mentioned a few players in my post last night but, inadvertently, didn't mention Small who was immense and just what we've been missing. When Ramsay is fit again, Jones has served his suspension, Hector fit again, the competition for places is only going to spur those players on. Dobbo now has genuine competition from Coventry, Camara is still getting up to match fitness, then of course there is Taylor, Backinson and the forgotten L Watson! Up front you can perm any 2 from Kanu, May, Chucks and Ladapo (who is getting fitter and better). If only MA had been despatched early in January I wonder if NJ could've had us pushing for a play-off place? Its too late now, but if we can get to safety quickly, he has the rest of this season to build for next, and with a trimmed down squad and a few quality additions I fancy us to do very very well and its, in my opinion, down to NJ, PH and CF. Feeling very very positive this morning.....5 points from games most of us thought would return 0 is nothing short of amazing!!

Exactly the same for the Cray pen in the replay, other than the foul was actually outside the box.

Alfie May’s penalty was just like the ones Darren Bent used to take (as opposed to di Canio for example).

NJ is a proper manager. For the 1st time in a few years we have some hope of seeing decent football played with passion

Not sure if Paul Warne's comments have already been posted?

He seems a good Manager to listen to, or read about - When he's come up short against Charlton in the past, I've not known him to whinge about unfairness etc.

When we win a couple of our next two or three games and are sitting comfortably in 15th wondering what all the fuss was about, there’s gonna have to be a bit of an inquest as to why this same bunch have been so shit for three quarters of the season when they are clearly capable of what they did last night. Cant all just be down to management surely although Jones deserves enormous credit for his immediate impact.

Extended highlights for the second goal shows the benefit of the individual press from Kanu backed up by a team press.

Great work from Kanu to harrass Cashin into a rushed pass and further press led to Aneke picking up the loose ball. You can tell Derby are not used to that kind of press. Cashin will have nightmares about the second goal. Hurried poor pass, and then out of position pulling his team mate out of position. Excellent from Kanu.

Great running from May to the left, that opens up the defence and Kanu is alert to run into space from a perfect ball from Aneke, with a good shot. Saved by the keeper but Karoy Anderson following up for a wonderful individual and team goal built on hard work. Real confidence booster.

This shows the positively changed mindset and energy of Charlton under Nathan Jones. The victory well earned. Hoping that Charlton players continuing to buy in to the method of play as it shows results.

Really pleased for May to get the penalty. Great in the number 10 role.

agree and I would also add the new performance manager who came in from Brighton (forgot his name!)

Jones has clearly got Chuks under instruction to play in a certain way to ensure we get the benefits he brings but with minimal injury risk.

Doesnt do long sprints protects those hamstrings.

He does produce a fairly boring style of play though doesn't he. They got their goal at the Valley and produced little else and that was similar to last nights efforts.

Anyone else noticed that Tennai Watson has improved almost beyond recognition over the last three games or so, especially when you take into account he’s carrying a slight injury?
With Small on the other flank it takes so much pressure off the centre backs, who all look way better too, no matter which combination are playing. Having a more energetic midfield who know how to stop the opposition playing has also contributed.

I would hope it would depend on the seriousness of the foul. I'm not seeing last night's challenge as a "professional foul" but a studs up foul.

The Laws of the Game are quite clear. If, in the opinion of the referee, the goalkeeper makes a genuine attempt to play the ball and not player, a penalty and caution are to be awarded. However, had the goalkeeper fouled the player for such offences as shirt pulling, pushing etc (ie not attempting to play the ball), then a sending off would have been the correct decision.
  • Can't remember when I last felt this good. Must be months ago. Maybe the end of November... Dunno.

He did quite a long sprint tracking back at one point, I was clenching my teeth expecting a hamstring to go.
