Released & Retained list 2024

The Dobson statement is as definitive as it’s going to get as it’s a live situation.
He was offered contracts, he turned them down, the nuances of why are probably many, and for another thread, but he did, and here we are.
He has signed an agreement in Hungary.
Thats it, the club are not going to state on an official released list whether they will be making an offer to bring him back/negotiate with the Hungarians, I really don’t know what people expect them to say?

He played every single game under Jones across all three CB positions and captained the side for our biggest result. He looked like he was one Jones trusted to do a job and there's no denying he was a central part of the team Jones put out to steer us clear of relegation. Towards the end Thomas started to fall apart though and his timing on that really wasn't great. I'd like to think of it as Jones trusted Thomas to do enough to keep us away from relegation but now that we're heading into a transfer window he's not at the high level required and we're aiming higher, which implies certain promises have been made. Considering we brought him in on a bit of a random free transfer as cover he played 61 games for us, filled in well at LB the previous season and until the fairly miserable end was probably our most consistent defender this season. Not good enough to be starting for a team pushing for promotion but he did the job that was asked of him in his two seasons and I'll think of him well for that.
Glad Tyreece is staying, would have been such a waste to just let him walk away

Happy with the retained list and particularly the news that Tyreece Campbell has signed a new deal. After a very promising debut season in 22/23, he suffered a crisis of confidence under Appleton but now we have a proper manager, he will hopefully recover his form on a consistent basis. Regardless of the favoured formation, every squad needs one or two wide players who can go past opponents.
It’s the right decision on Terrell Thomas - a thoroughly committed and honest professional, who I believe will get himself fixed up with another club at this level. I’m sure he leaves the club with everyone’s respect and good wishes.
As to the players currently under contract, looking at that list does give me a bit of a sinking feeling, as we have far too many poor ones. That said, it can be done, as we know from Chris Powell’s 103 point season, when Solly and Jacko were the only regulars from the previous season, together with Bradley Wright-Phillips, who had joined us in January.
We have to cope with the legacy of dreadful recruitment over a number of years and one of the club’s principal difficulties in this window will be trying to move on contracted players, whose wages far exceed their ability and contribution. Fraser is the paradigm example and, given that he has flopped at Hearts, I expect he’ll end up getting a lesser gig up at Scotland and we’ll have to pay him something to help bridge the enormous gap towards his current salary.
McGrandles seems to be permanently injured - save for his successful spell at Cambridge last season and half a dozen games at Lincoln this - and I doubt that he’ll feature in Nathan Jones’ plans, although you never know. As for Terry Taylor, he remains an unknown quantity, having played hardly any football this year, but it’s a little ominous that he’s had zero game time under Jones, despite apparently being fit. I expect they’ll both end up on loan, alongside players like Edun and Watson.
Some weasily words on Dobbo’s departure. I wonder how many drafts they went through, as Scott attempted to justify his egregious negligence. Hopefully that gentleman has now been put very firmly in his place.7 -
Goodbye to all who leave; hopefully more will follow.
The rebuilding must start NOW, so that we are not left with the dregs at the end of July.
Curbs did all his recruitment very early and i hope that the club support NJ with a good squad.

One question from me - does anyone know what the word is about Alfie?
Is he likely to be sold?0 -
Someone should ask him
What's it all about? Alfie...18 -
Does NJ have form for wanting young/project players? The realisation that Small is the same age/younger than the likes of Asiimwe, Anderson, Kanu, Leaburn, TC - we could have a good few years as these players get to gel over time! Needs bolstering with proven top quality / leader style players but I’m quite excited if we are going to look at building long term patterns of play with more consistent teams…1

So we could always pick up Tyrese Campbell from the out of contract list and play him alongside Tyreece Campbell. That would really give @KillersBeard something to worry about.9

Bar the George Dobson farce (Up there with Kermorgant in 2014 and Powell, Flanagan & Abrahams in 1978), then in my opinion I can’t disagree with the retained and released list from the clubLooking forward to see what players Nathan Jones can persuade to join Charlton Athletic this summer9

Wish Dobbo could have stayed, but we were lucky to have him and watch him for the last three seasons and he is still young enough that we may yet meet again…
Really pleased to see TC renew and hope Small signs the longer term deal (rather than us force his stay through a contract trigger).Otherwise, cannot argue with anything else that has thus far developed. I expect a few sales or free transfers away still, as do most, and like others cannot wait to see who NJ has been linking up. That work no doubt started many weeks ago. Has my support all the way.0 -
Terrell Thomas getting released suggests one thing to me. That is we have centre halves under contract which we might see as squad players so the intention is to bring a few centre halves in that are better than Gillesphey and Jones. I think had either of these two been out of contract we may have kept Thomas for his verstatility.3

I'm all for George Dobson. And I'm all for what he's done for us.
But if this regime are really going to walk the walk then they will need to find someone much better than Dobbo to hold dawn that slot.
Nostalgia is clouding a lot of judgement. But there is much better out there.
Whether we are willing to pay for it is another matter.10 -

Edit: having seen the further discussion, that’s a bit harsh on Garry.2 -

Offered him an insulting contract that reflected his “squad player” status, offered him an “improved” contract that was still off what GD wanted, finally offered him what he’d asked for in the first place but by then it was too late and the damage had been done. Would have willingly sent him away in Jan/Feb during the middle of our relegation crisis.
