I expect Key, DBD and Northeast to get us to around 280-1 by tea.

Sorry, meant at the bookies we are 280-1 to bat through to tea.

When was the last time we did that let alone against an attack as good as the Aussies? A lot more longer than 280 innings I would suggest. Add two noughts on and they might be close to the true odds!

Wonder what price the Aussies were to do that? 2/1?

    135-0

    Rogers 65*
    Marsh 60*
  • 216-1 (56.3 overs)

    Rogers LBW Hunn 84

    Marsh 100*
    Smith 20*

Just the game Kent needed to find some form in the 4 day game.....!! Bowlers toiling, getting knackered and confidence taking an even further battering.

Edit. To be fair it actually does look like it is benefiting Matt Hunn. Figures of 2-59,and the wickets of Marsh and Rogers in only your fourth 1st class game is pretty good going.
  • I see Nigel Llong is one of the umpires, surely he can give a few dodgy LBWs out to help us a bit :-)

Rogers was dropped twice by Adam Riley...
  • 430-5

    Smith retired on 111
Watson caught by Denly off Hunn to give the bowler figures of 24-2-90-4
  • This game is akin to Margate playing Manchester United.

438-6 now and Hunn has figures of 25-2-95-5

I think even Jimmy would take those figures especially as he has dismissed Clarke, Watson, Rogers and both Marshes. A major claim for a CC place in my opinion.

Hunn has done well but you just know we will be bowled out for around 150 or so.

but can he do it on a rainy day in stoke?
  • 477-6 at lunch off 120. One would think the Aussies should declare now to give them enough time to bowl us out twice - today!

Kent probably told them to keep batting as they want a full day's play tomorrow and ideally Sunday for the revenue!

    Love your optimism, Len

  • Claydon is scheduled to bat at 8 with Riley, Hunn and Thomas behind him.

No chance of the tail wagging in my view so we have to hope the 'proper' batsmen do their job.

Opportunity there for Harmison to make a statement that he should be playing regularly.

Also an opportunity for Rob and Joe to show they still have it...

They will need to get runs given that Harmison and Ball are in the top 6. I know Ball is an addick, but I am unconvinced as to what he contributes

    Ball is still relatively young.

He had a serious longterm injury which, as I understand it, has severely affected his bowling and it is only now that he is getting back to proper fitness bowling wise.

He has batting ability and has scored first class fifties so the hope I assume is that he can develop his batting and become an all rounder.

The fact he bowls left arm makes him different and probably partly explains why Kent are persisting with him. He is also a very good fielder.

Back in the dark ages the late and much missed Brian Luckhurst played his early Kent 1st X1 games as a slow left arm spinner batting down the order. His batting developed to the extent that he played 20 odd tests as an opener for England and the arrival of one D Underwood Esq put paid to any need of his slow left arm bowling.

    Maybe Adam can emulate Brian.

I really hope you are right. Making the odd first class 50 wouldn't suggest top 6 material, however. Kent's batting has been woefully weak all year, Northeast aside
  • I believe that Kent are hoping that Ball will eventually become the natural successor to Stevens. Big shoes to fill but Stevens is almost 40 and Ball just 22 so it is probably a bit early to write him off yet.

It is a bit like Blake who, I for one, was very surprised Kent offered him another contract last season. That faith has been rewarded by his performances in the one day game. As we are finding with the Test/ODI teams there are probably opportunities for both types of player at County level. As to whether Ball can bridge the gap in either or both disciplines only time will tell.
  • What's up with Brendan Nash incidentally? Is he injured or dropped?

Nash was playing for the 2s on Wednesday.

Perhaps he has been injured and is on his way back.

He's played a few games for the 2nd XI but don't think he's been getting runs at the rate that would justify him being recalled. And that's taking into account how poorly Key/D B-D/Denly/Cowdrey etc etc have been performing.

Blake has played one or two decent innings, no doubt. Ball is a bits and pieces player. To be an all rounder these days, you really have to be very good at 2 of the three disciplines. He isn't, I fear. Still, I hope to be proven wrong

Kent Cricket is delighted to announce that Sam Northeast has signed a long-term contract extension.

The 25-year-old Ashford-born batsman is the top scorer in the county in the 2015 NatWest T20 Blast with 520 runs in nine matches, helping Kent to top spot in the South Group.

In the LV= County Championship, he has scored 672 runs at an average of 44.8 with six 50s in eight matches to date.

Putting pen to paper shortly before the visit of Australia this week, Northeast said: “I am delighted to commit my future to the club. I’m Kent born and bred and it’s such an exciting time for Kent Cricket with the group of players we have and the talent coming through from our Academy.

“I’ve really enjoyed my cricket and the challenge of captaincy this summer so there was never any thought of going elsewhere.

“With our return to a new-look County Ground, Beckenham and the continuing redevelopment of The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, the future is bright at Kent and I want to be a part of that.”

Northeast took on the on-field captaincy in May 2015 after club captain Rob Key handed over the reins.

Kent Cricket CEO Jamie Clifford said: “We are delighted to agree terms with Sam. His form this year in all forms of the game has been excellent, notably in a series of match-winning innings in the NatWest T20 Blast.

“He is a fine leader and has the respect of the dressing roomamongst senior players and youngsters alike.

“He is of course one of a group of players to come through the Kent Cricket Academy and will play a key role in the Club’s future fortunes.”

Capped at England under-15 and under-19 level, he broke into the Kent first team in 2007 and has scored more than 5,500 first-class runs including ten centuries and 34 half-centuries.
