brogib just doesn't like music so there's not much point in trying to argue with him.

Billy Bragg. Awful person, awful music.

    Awful person? Do tell...
    Still wondering why?
Bragg wrote my favourite line of all time. I don't know why I like it so much, but it makes me smile every time. - "I saw two shooting stars last night / I wished on them but they were only satellites /
Is it wrong to wish on space hardware / I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care"
There's another line in that song I like even more Jimmy: -
I loved the words you wrote for me
    But that was bloody yesterday
With you jiMMy, The Bard of Barking is LEGEND. Just one example : "Levi Stubb's Tears".

But it WAS the Beatles who changed the face of pop, and the others followed, including the Beach Boys. Again whether you like the music or not isn't really the point. Even the dear old modfather copied one of their songs...

Paul Weller has often cited The Beatles as his biggest musical influence and he knows a thing or two.

Honestly, people who think The Beatles are 'overrated',or what I like to refer to as the ' I know nothing about music effect.'

To like music, I must appreciate The Beatles haha get a grip

Would the Beatles and the beach Boys both have been as good without each other? I know that Brian Wilson was obsessed with the Beatles and pet sounds was a result of hearing I think rubber soul. I don't know if the Beatles cared as much about what the bb were doing.

After hearing their new single this morning on Radio, I can re-confirm that Elbow are definitely the most overrated band ever. What a load of turgid repetitive nonsense.

Whilst on this theme, I thought I'd post the lyris of Kaizer Chiefs song "Oh My God" - absolutely brilliant - almost Dylanesque..

Oh my god I can't believe it
I've never been this far away from home
And oh my god I can't believe it
I've never been this far away from home
And oh my god I can't believe it
I've never been this far away from home
And oh my god I can't believe it
I've never been this far away from home
Great rulers make for greater glory
The only thing growing is our history
Knock me down I'll get right back up again
I'll come back stronger than a powered up Pac-Man
    It don't matter to me
'Cos all I wanted to be
Was a million miles from here
    Somewhere more familiar
Oh my god, I can't believe it
I've never been this far away from home
And oh my god I can't believe it
I've never been this far away from home
And oh my god I can't believe it
I've never been this far away from home
And oh my god I can't believe it

    [Instrumental Break]

Oh my, god I can't believe it
I've never been this far away from home

Have we done that fat geezer..?

    Meat Loaf

Creeps like a cancer into normally sane people's music collection. Imitation rock for the white suburbs powered by marketing men in suits.

    Sacrilege.

Bloody underated. How can they be overated when no-one ever mentions them?
I was scanning through 8 pages thinking "nobody will say R.E.M., that would be silly." but there it was. Nobody talks about the incredible back catalogue of totally varied songs they've written over 30 years. It's an astonishing collection. So I find it impossible to class them as overrated, by the public at least. Maybe one could argue Warners paid them too much in that record deal post-Automatic, but even then, they paid that back and then some. Not liking them is one thing, but overrated? Never!
Jimmy you should know that there's at least one person on here who agrees with every word you have said on this subject.

You can apply that to all commercial music/bands.

Now I understand personal tastes will influence this thread hugely. Indeed, the music I like covers most genres but how the hell GLAM ROCK artists have been scarcely mentioned is worrying.

    Blur

Listening to mostly alternative music since 1990 Blur were just there in the background. I liked them and had nearly all of their records, but this was chiefly down to the company I work for having EMI as our main account - freebies!

It wasn't until after their break and seeing the 2009 Glastonbury performance (not live unfortunately) that I realised how much they were taken for granted, by me at least.

Their diverse range of quality songs is amazing.

    Most definitely this.

Their new album 'The Magic Whip' is sheer quality.

The Sex Pistols. The bullshit talked about this pub rock band and their influence on modern music cracks me up.

Er but they did have a massive influence......
Wouldn't have been Factory Records without them.

Surely you have to be rated in order to be overrated?

Are they 'overrated' though? More often than not those sorts of bands are slagged off endlessly.

If anything I'd say quite a few glam bands are underrated when you look how many talented guitarists came out of that era.

Nirvana are hands down the most over rated band of all time. Awful music. They're only famous because the awful, depressing singer died. Crap!!

The drummer did alright for himself though!

    the eagles.

    Have to agree with this.
Whilst I think the song Hotel California is a solid gold copper-bottomed classic, everything else they've done sounds beyond ordinary to me.
    Generic west coast blandness

I thought this thread was about over rated bands not about bands you don't like.
Take the Stone Roses for example, loads of partially deaf people like them, however Ian Brown sings flatter than a witches tit, so therefore they are over rated.

    Surely it's the same thing!!

If a band have been hugely successful but you think they're shite, in your mind surely that makes them over rated?

No its not the same thing at all.
Its about being constructive as above. Ian Brown cannot carry tune in a bucket, so they are over rated.

Chuck berry is a pony guitar player and therefore overrated.

Can you not see that that's a personal opinion? I agree with you on both counts but other people may think they're both brilliant, therefore not over rated. Not truing to argue, just making the point that this thread will always boil down to personal opinion

Yes of course I can see its a personal opinion, thats why I gave examples why they are over rated, with no example then it might as well be titled, "Bands that you think are Shit', then every band can be listed here, because every major artist/band will have someone that does not like then.
Over rated is different to not being liked.
